  • Following the Doomsday Battle in which the Trisolaran droplet laid waste to the entirety of humanity's space fleet, it seemed that all hope had been lost for mankind. But 7 ships had escaped the solar system, fleeing the devastation of the droplet. These orphans of humanity were split into two groups, those who would eventually call themselves Starship Earth comprised of 5 ships, and across the sun heading in nearly the opposite direction, the ships Bronze Age and Quantum.
    The Vessel Natural Selection had fled the solar system before the battle due to the actions of Zang Behai, who saw escapism as the only hope for humanity's future in the face of the looming Trisolaran threat. 4 ships were sent in pursuit of Zang Behai, but after the Doomsday occurred Zang Behai’s pursuers realized that they could never return to the solar system while the droplet reigned. Their only hope would be to join forces with Zang Behai and the inhabitants of natural selection. This would set the stage for the tragic, Battle of Darkness.

    As a reader, you're initially comforted by Zang Behai's triumphalism, thinking he will later play a pivotal role in humanity's victory, and feel a deep horror that it was actually a mask and he was always an escapist advocate, to finally respecting his utter clarity of thought and appreciate him for ultimately preserving the human race till the end of the universe. If you think about it, more than even Yun tianming or Luo Ji, Zang Behai was the actual savior of mankind

      One idea i got from this series of book is that it is not a good idea to enforce some kind of rules unto all of humanity as it close off possible ideas that would be the solution, if you enforce the same rule onto everyone and in the end if that idea proven to be a mistake then we all suffer the same terrible fate... spoiler.. for example humanity's ban on FTL travel ultimate destory earth but there was someone that violated the rule and did it and they survived. Same for Zang's action which was also done out violation.

  • @hongjian3714
    @hongjian3714 Před měsícem +48

    Zhang Beihai's words "It doesnt matter" really hits like a truck and stands for the nihilistic outlook of the series in general.
    He knows he will die, alongside the crew of his ship and its first officer Dongfang, who has already become somewhat like his daughter. But true to the Trisolaran saying"if one of us survives, all of us will survive", he knows that his death doesnt matter for Starship Earth, as Blue Space will survive, cannibalizing its parts - both machine and organic.
    In the greater scheme of things though, nothing has ever mattered. Not humanity, not trisolaris, not the survival of the spacefaring humans. The heat death of the universe and universal dimensional collapse is the fate shared by all. Even the zero-homers/resetters wont save anyone, since resetting the universe to its 10D edenic age means the end of all life as it fuses back to the singularity. So in the end, nothing has ever mattered and only death is eternal, which is also the title of the last book "Death's End" 死神永生, meaning literally "Death lives Forever".
    Really looking forward to how D&D will pull this part off.

      @hongjian3714 Před měsícem +7

      @@ZxZ239 I agree. But I do think that he knew that he has fulfilled his purpose and accepts his fate now. This is a very Chinese or Asian style of thinking, where sacrifice for the sake of the collective is seen as a positive thing. But this line of thinking, this attitude of being non-chalant in regards to mass extinction events as long as some survive, pretty much runs through the entire book series. IIRC Guan Yifan who meets Cheng Xin at the end of the book also responded with "it doesnt matter" when she felt guilty about causing the humanity in the solar system to become extinct. Guan, being a member of the Blue Space, essentially soaked up Zhang Beihai's mindset after getting to know about all the f*cked up stuff happening in the universe.

      The cultural swap of Zhang Beihai from a mainland Chinese character into a British character in the Netflix adaptation is one of the main reasons I am skeptical that Netflix's deviations from the books will work. Beihai is a very "Chinese" character rooted in China's authoritarian political system and represents very Chinese socio-cultural elements and tropes. His character serves as a political commissar who purges other people for dis-loyalty, but has his own disloyal agenda...which he learned to hide via growing up and playing the political game in China's authoritarian cut throat system (where saying the wrong thing can get you sent off to prison or worse). He is supposed to be an ideological opposite to the Chinese villain of the book where both grew up in a similar authoritarian environment but ended up with opposite beliefs.
      Apparently, the new show turned him into a British character. At that point, it's not even about race/ethnicity or physical features. It's about how does this change even work within the story, themes, and other context of the book? To change that type of character into a British character who grew up in the UK's liberal representative democracy with a very different cultural, social, and political environment & attitudes that is completely opposite of the character he is supposed to be based on - how does that even work?

    • @hongjian3714
      @hongjian3714 Před měsícem +5

      @@Intranetusa dont think he is much about authoritarianism, but more like how he is a realist. An actual commissar in western popular understanding may be someone who purges people for not being ideological enough, but that's not how the chinese themselves see it, who see commissars more positively like soldier-scholars who are the intellectual aides to the peasant based army, helping the usually illiterate rank and file to write letters to their loved ones and such. But in this case, the commissar is not an inspiring character, but someone who rather tells the men to flee the battle and not to believe in victory. He said it in the books quite clearly; his father fought the Americans in Korea and knows how scary technological disparity is. As such, humanity stands no chance against the trisolarans, as they are several magnitudes more advanced vs humanity as the US army was vs the PLA back in the day. In that case, this commissar actually did his job well, being logical and intellectual thus saving the rest of humanity by fleeing an unwinnable battle and leading the "illiterate peasants" who were sure of their victory to the safety of escape.

    Don't forget though that Zang Behai was about to fire on the other ships to ensure the survival of his ship, but he got soft hearted and hesitated for a few seconds and got killed. (Edit: He realised he was already dead when the ship computed detected incoming weapons fire, and then his) last words were *smile* "It doesn't matter, its all the same".

    just a quick side note I cannot help commenting here. "Enterprise" has been the name of numerous U.S. vessels and a few Colonial American ones, and it was in honour of the CV-6, one of the most decorated ships in US history and the most decorated ship in World War II that Gene Roddenberry named the heroic starship in Star Trek.
    so while it's quite probable that Cixin Liu was thinking of Star Trek, he was probably also aware of the real historical 'Enterprises' (and/or the fact that its just simply a rather prominent name to give a vessel) and we can safely assume that in that fictional universe, they named the starship after the historical precedents, not after the fictional one.

    "Enterprise" has been used for ships for centuries. Star Trek just popularized the name. Like the TV show, the Enterprise is always reserved for the flagship. The most recent Enterprise was decommissioned in 2017, and the new one will be commissioned in 2028. Just a little Easter egg, I think. :)

    This reminds me of materialistic explanations of history: that majority of humanity's actions are driven from external factors as resources, living space, available technologies.
    It is like as morality, religion, ideas which are thought by some to guide history are actually emerging factors, secondary to material world (like money is an emergent secondary thing, compared to resources). If there are enough food, water, land area, then it is more possible for people to be nice to each other. On the other side, if there is harsh deficit, violence and hatred are more possible to arise.

    Hey, I've been a big fan of your channel for years, I don't comment much but if you happen to see this comment I have a suggestion for a Three Body Problem video.
    I just finished the books and have been watching a lot of your content. Something I haven't seen yet is an in depth explanation of Yun Tianming.
    In my opinion he is one of few truly interesting characters in the books and has a fascinating story. A dissection of the deeper meanings regarding his "works" (trying to keep this comment spoiler free) in a video explaining his life would be complex and interesting I think. If you've already touched on that somewhere in the many amazing videos you've done on the series please disregard!
    Also it would be cool to know what your current top 10 books of all time are! We seem to have similar tastes on what makes a great book. Thank you for all the content you've created over the years, it's really made a difference to me. Your content has kept me thinking and kept me dreaming, thank you.

    I genuinely believed Zhang Beihai was a triumphalist and that he would have been the one to defeat the Trisolarans during a stelar battle, but when it’s revealed that he’s an escapist I was genuinely shocked.
    Beihai is the 5th Wallfacer, always hiding his real intentions from everyone but within his plans and action you can see his real intentions when they are revealed. Only his plan succeeds and saved humanity.
