  • The Remembrance of Earth’s Past Trilogy is one of the best sets of speculative science fiction books to appear in recent years. The Trilogy explores themes surrounding both the human will to survive, and the potential of mankind to inflict harm upon itself rather than band together in the face of a greater threat. Another major theme is our place in the universe and assumptions about the cosmos and our lack of actual concrete knowledge about it. Because of its exploration of these themes, the Remembrance of Earth's Past is one of the most existentially terrifying series of the modern era. I’ve covered several aspects of the series in videos that can be found linked in a playlist below. In this video specifically, we will discuss the ending of the final book in the trilogy, Death’s End. This video will have spoilers for all three books in the series.

    Sophon's description of overall structure of the pocket universes started to scratch an itch in my brain. She said that there were multiple great universes and pocket universes all existing on a membrane. Then later they find out that the mass of the universe is "set" incredibly precisely/delicately to just barely allow a big crucn, and deviation from that total mass will result in a big chill/rip, preventing it from restarting.
    Those two pieces of info, along with the theme of the "nature" of the universe not being so natural, having been influenced by countless civilizations, across multiple dimensions of space, made me ask: "Why would the dark forest stop at just the edge of the universe?"
    If we make the, admittedly, big assumption that the universes could detect other universes, but similar dark forest rules applied, then perhaps the fundamental rules, including the mass limit, could be part of a "safety signal" to prevent dark forest strikes from other universes.
    Thought it was a fun idea.

      Universe have their own physics. Once you leave universe and enter universe the laws of physics are different hence we cannot use laws of physics as weapons as intelligent life did within universe. Your idea have other flaw. The problem was not that the mass was set. It was greater than big crunch criticality. They were unsure that what exactly will be enough massfor big crunch. That is why it was important that other pocket universe makes same decision.

    What impressed me most about this series had less to do with the sci-fi aspects and more the anthropological. The amount of care and attention given to the question about how humanity would respond to the fact that they know an existential threat is heading towards them; they know when (or at least have a good idea) and as to when and what form it will take. Throwing in that the ETA is beyond the first several generation's lifetime, but not so far out that it isn't constantly on everyone's minds.
    There was a time when this type of thing was something people had to deal with. In the Ancient world, when you are aware an enemy army is heading your way, but might not get there for several months or even a couple years. That really isn't something that's been an issue for a long time.
    There was a realism to how everytime someone was taken out of stasis after being asleep for decades or a century, to find that the world was completely different from how it was before, including society's view on the Trisolarans imminent arrival: from hopelessness to authoritarianism; a martial preparedness to denial. It's like watching an entire species going through the various stages of grief.

    Oh yes, Environmentalism has always been a theme in the series, since the very first installment. The Co-founder of the Threebody Organization was a radical environmentalist. Ye Wenjie read the book ‘Silent Spring’ during her time at the Red Bank Base, which was about the apocalyptic environmental disaster caused by insecticide abuse in the US. Different chemicals interact in the natural bodies and created new toxins, the unpredictable results making chemical decontamination extremely difficult.
    The advanced civilizations of the Universe are the ones abusing the insecticides. They use horrific and unstoppable, ever-expanding weapons of mass destruction to cull the younger races, who are literally just insects to them. However they themselves cannot cancel out the effects of these weapons, and find themselves under the same threat they put the younger races in. Ironic. Just like how humans got poisoned by chemicals of our own production.

Our gestures have good intentions, but the results can turn out bad.

      I understand what you mean but I disagree. Firstly, she really was not trusted for the 2nd time, she just took on a responsibility that in hindsight was responsibility over the humanitys' survival. She gave the ownership of Halo Company to Wade but it was not the humanity that placed trust in her. Instead I feel as if she took on a huge responsibility either naively or out of massive arrogance and belief that she knows best. In the end she makes the wrong choise but it is discussed that it was a delay of about 34 years at thst point. In reality more time was wasted by humanity by banning lightspeed research as there are years and years between her receiving the fairytales and her awakening in bunker era. If that time was spent, already, on lightspeed research it couldve been on time. So really, the 2nd mistakes was a larger decision and her mistake on making Wade give up was not a responsibility given to her but instead one she just took on. I think her character is actually quite good in that she is very human and makes a lot of mistakes, even after she should know better she is just a crisis era human, not a galactic era human. Its also shown in the discussion at the end when they ponder whether to return to the grand universe or not

    Your passion for this series has really rubbed off on me. I'm dealing with depression and all that stuff so I prefer my more optimistic science fiction but this series is absolutely fascinating. I used to think it was depressing just for the hell of it but it really does seem to have alot to say about humanity, which is exactly what science fiction is all about.

    Note on the expansion of our universe: Space is expanding _between_ galaxies. It's true that eventually we (if anyone is left by then) won't be able to see anything outside our galaxy, but the galaxy itself will hold together instead of its mass spreading out to nothingness. Sabine Hossenfelder did a great video on this "What does the universe expand into?" Credit to her for my knowledge of this. 😉

    • @himynameis3664
      @himynameis3664 Před rokem +6

      But by the time that all the other galaxies have expanded out of our field of view will there even be many stars left burning in our own galaxy? Basically will the other galaxies recede faster than the lifetime of the stars in our galaxy?

    • @patreekotime4578
      @patreekotime4578 Před rokem +6

      Yes, but stellar fissible material is constantly decreasing as the universe heads towards entropy. Eventually, there wont be any star stuff left and just inert metallic dust and black holes will be left, drifting out forever in darkness.

    • @RipMachine1
      @RipMachine1 Před rokem +1

      @@himynameis3664 well it wont just be our galaxy but our local galaxy cluster. The force of gravity is strong enough to hold it together and likely will merge into some kind of super galaxy eventually

    Have you ever played "No Man's Sky "? It's an amazing space game and would be perfect for using footage of frigates, freighters, and other massive and/or small space ships. Whole fleets of ships are constantly popping out of hyperspace when you're flying around any star system. Plus there's an infinite amount of flora and fauna that are procedurally generated. Many creatures look like they're right out of a Lovecraft story. The game is so big it would take everyone on Earth working 24/7 for 15,000 years to visit every star system and planet and moon. It's an amazing space game that I guarantee you'll find very entertaining. Funny tip, you literally have to use Stargates to visit planets. There's pictographs you have to input in order to travel to planets previously found by people. (Just like the Stargate movies and shows)

    I still have every intention to read it, but still. . .If I had the mindset for approaching sci-fi I would have grabbed this book on my own.
    Now that Quinn has primed my mindset, I can discover more sci-fi novels after I finish remembrance of Earth's past series.

    Fun fact: the literal translation of the original Chinese title of Death's End, 死神永生, is "the god of death lives forever", a very fitting way of describing the ultimate fate of the universe if not enough matter were returned from the countless basement universes.
    It makes even _more_ sense if you've read the fan sequel, _Three Body X_ (or _The Redemption of Time_ in English).

    Quinn, I both Love and Hate you! I love you for introducing me to this series a year ago, I hate you for introducing me to this series a year ago.
    I have read so so so many scifi books, among which from your recommendations in your streams: Killing Star, Childhood's End, the whole Dune series, House of Suns, But man-oh-man nothing has thoroughly screwed my up like this series..... It was such a fun ride, that I even listened to the audiobooks 4 times since then.
    Can you or any of my lovely co-fans of this series recommend more books that are as cerebral as Redemption of Earth's Past series, or even something with a similar vibe and dread that is the DarkForest theory?

I'm not a full blown nihilist, but it did show me that nothing we do matters in the end. In 10 quintillion quintillion quintillion years, nothing that you, me, or anyone else has ever done or accomplished will have mattered.
