  • I've been trying to learn more about planted aquariums in the last year, these are some of my thoughts on aquarium fertilisers. I'm still very far from being an expert, so let me know your experiences in the comments!

    I'm in England and we have a company called TNC so using their complete liquid fertilizer. They big on simple packaging and really good value for money. I've never dosed my tank before and my plants look like crap so hoping just about anything will improve the situation ✌️😀

    Nice info, experimenting with ferts myself at the moment with a Dosator. I use clay balls too for roots. It annoys me when you see these perfect planted aqua escapes and I can't even even keep an anubius alive 😂

    Great video, very well put. I'm waiting on a delivery of TNC Lite to try out see if it helps my struggling plants, I only use root feeder balls I got from eBay but hoping some liquid fertiliser can help with other plants that aren't heavy root feeders.

    Hey always remember to read the directions thoroughly because many liquid fertilizers state that they should be refrigerated after they have been opened for a certain amount of times... Often 90 days.

    I’m always caught in two minds. Some days I wake up and I have a discus tank and sometimes it’s a planted tank with discus in it. I alternate between tropica premium nutrition and Seachem flourish. I also like to use Seachem discus trace for the fish. I have no idea if the ferts affect the fish or if the Discus trace affect the plants!

    I've been using dry ferts solutions for last 4 yrs and won't go back to over priced all in one ferts. Aquarium plant foods sell a starter kit for £20 which lasts ages. On top of that I add a few drops of chelated iron. I find the best way is just add a small amount of macro and micro mix daily which ensures no excess of nutrients in the tank at once then the tank can be reset by a big water change at the weekend. Plant food is only one part of the photosynthesis process. Without adequate light and pressurised co2 the plants are unable to absorb the nutrients you're throwing into the aquarium and will eventually die off. I use a 2kg fire extinguisher and a cheap Chinese needle valve regulator. A local company refills the co2 for a fiver roughly every 6months. Its a cheap way along with the dry ferts to get lush and healthy plant growth. Cheers.

      Any recommendations for delicate fish, pressurised co2 and ph swings ?

    • @AquariumAdventures
      @AquariumAdventures  Před 5 lety +1

      just proceed with caution I say - I use pressurised co2 and haven't noticed any ph swings unless I leave it on accidentally when the lights go off, hence a solenoid valve being a key part of any kit for me

    I'm no expert in this area, far from it, but reading a few forums about planted tanks, they're suggesting for advanced planted tanks, with good growth you need lights with a good PAR rating down to the depths yuour plants need them. The PAR level of the light decreases the deeper into water it goes.
    You need CO2 to the right level for your light/plants/ferts used.
    A 50% water change each week.
    And they say you need a water turnover of 10x. o.0
    That's an enormous turnover in tropical tanks. That's more a marine level.
    I was seeing guys on the forums with 400l tanks using 2 FX6. Some others were augmenting their filter flow by using the sort of powerheards you see in marine tanks and one guy with his 500 litre tank had those MaxSpect Gyres to get his waterflow up but the tank looked like a raging river and the fish (tetras and the like) were seekking shelter in the rocks lol.
    The plants growth looked amazing but for me, going for turnovers like that is extreme.

    • @AquariumAdventures
      @AquariumAdventures  Před 5 lety

      Yes, I've been living in those forums for a while trying to understand everything and some of these more extreme planted guys are miles away from what I want. I, and I believe most people, just want the few plants they have, which are likely 'easy' plants, to look good. This vid was just about the ferts, but you're 100% right that you can't look at ferts without looking at lights and CO2. Topic for a future video!

      A lot of people telling a lot of things. But you can have planted tanks without any high tech equipment.
      You can have nice planted tanks without CO2, bright light or complicated ferts
