Oh, Louise, you and I are kindred spirits. "Instead of putting brush to paper, scrolling Instagram and shopping online for a bunch of supplies." .... "A bookshelf full of self help books." .... perfectionism paralysis. Yes, yes and yes. You are a GEM and I am so thankful to you for your insights and wisdom.
Wow, Louise. Your sharing is advice not only for art but for life in general. I see myself in so much of what you have said.
I hope it helped. Thank you Angela.
Me too.
Needed to hear this Louise, I see myself in each and every one of these bad habits, sometimes trying to be perfect doesn’t help at all, in fact I think it pulls you back. Not to mention the impostor sindrome, Thanks for letting me know I’m not alone 😅 love your art and so personal style and learned so much with your videos. Thank you so much! 😊
You are a lovely person, Louise. Thank you for willing to be vulnerable by sharing your own struggles to inspire others.
Thank you Lo! ❤️
I often find myself doing things that are "more important " (including laundry 😮)than sitting and painting because I freeze up and can't seem to feel the joy I used to feel. I love watching your videos and I learn something from each one. I am fortunate in that I belong to a wonderful group of other watercolorists that push me. Thanks for THIS lesson ❤
Thanks so much Lisa! That's funny......I used to do that when I was studying at uni.......instead of writing an essay I had to get done, I'd see that the laundry needed folding.........oh look there's a laundry basket that requires my attention! 😂 💚
I dont do the laundry or dishes because I freeze up. I do them because I think I have to, and I think its not ok to paint because it isnt "work".
I used to feel that joy also... and when I can embrace it like that again... I will paint! Thanks for sharing!
"Shop online for things you dont need" that hit me hard 😂 thank you louise, you always remind me of me the pleasure of painting
You never fail to make me laugh at the end of a video. You are a kind, warm person to listen to. I've learned a lot from watching. Thank you for being you 🥰
My mum always said that you will fail by comparison, how right she was. Thank you for this, I am guilty of all these bad habits. Mindset is everything! ❤ p.s. beautiful geranium painting 😍
I had no idea that my favourite artist also goes through the same struggles that a noob artist like me do. The part where you said regarding planning to do the perfect thing and not ending up doing it- I felt it. I'm guilty of all of these, and while I know that it takes time to improve, it's a daily struggle to make my brain actually realize. Thank you so much for sharing this with is, I feel seen.
I have noticed it helps to have someone who is supportive but also understands art be my second set of eyes. We don't need yes people, we need knowledgeable, encouraging people (for me it's my brother). I don't take all of his tips/advice as our styles are different, but most of the time, he can name what's bothering me about a project without making me want to rip it all up. It's often too late to rescue it, but I feel better looking at a failure and knowing why it is one. 😂
“Focusing on the progress". I am not an artist, but I love this!
Thank you!
One thing Ive learned ...if I have a failure, I do it again and again...that also helps me feel more confident once I master it. Compare my work to my work.
Goodness me Louise, it’s like you reached into my mind and pulled out everything that crosses it. Thank you for the pragmatic and inspirational advice. While listening to you, I had a lightbulb moment where I actually felt the enthusiasm to dive into some painting, ready to fail or whatever, but to enjoy the process. Thank you again 😊
P.S. your bloopers always make me smile. I actually giggled out loud at the “bookshelf” one 😂

Your advice is so valuable to any art beginner ❤
Louise, Love your painting! The petals have such depth and subtle variation of color.
Your topic is spot on! I had an instructor advise the class to keep and date all their work, good or bad. Periodically you can go back and see how far you have advanced. Great video! Love the bloopers too! ❤️
Yes, all of the above. I’ve been painting for about a year now in watercolour with no prior painting experience in any other medium and yet I expect to be like all of you stunning CZcamsrs 😂 Great advice. I’ve realised for a long time that you bring how you are in life to every single thing you do, so it’s worthwhile working on getting rid of those habits everywhere. BTW, when doubt stops you doing things to improve your business, remember it’s not just your physical paintings that you bring (and those are staggeringly beautiful) but also your Self and that also is beautiful. I find I have favourite artists that I love to watch and a large component of my enjoyment comes from their presence. Wonderful video and great tips 🙏
Louise!
Thank you so much! I needed this video today! Your such a delight and I feel so much more ready to pick myself up, dust myself off and begin again! Your paintings are absolutely beautiful! Thanks for your hard work and for putting yourself out there!! Cheers 🙏🏻
Thank you Amy. I'm glad to have helped.
You are absolutely right, I'm trying to be less strict with myself, I want to paint for the pleasure of painting and not to win a competition.
Thank you Louise😍This advice is so good and I really agree that with social media its easy to think that all of this great art out there is unattainable when you might be seeing only the persons best attempt after many tries! The fact you said that 25% of your paintings are somewhat failed attempts gives me hope! Thank you!
Louise, I have admired your painting for years, and taken much inspiration from you and the fact that you also were doing this CZcams channel! Filming editing posting is an incredible amount of work. I always say I am practicing my painting, art, I heard fail and failure so often in this video I had to stop as my anxiety started. Kindness, compassion and comparing one to only oneself are great tips. I encourage you to remove fail/failed/failure from your vocabulary. You are inspirational!❤ Love the quotes.
Thank you Bayleigh! ❤️
Oh, my heaven's you have hit it on the head for me!! Procrastination, not believing in myself oh and all the rest you covered. Thank you so much for opening up about YOUR fears. Yes, life in general is also like that for me, sad isn't it that we cannot see just how wonderful we all are! Your honesty in your art and life experience is why I follow you and love your tutorials.
This year I grabbed the brush by the handle and put myself out there, 2 pieces are hanging at my local Art Society and 2 are right now on display at the 151st Orange Show.
We are blessed to have you!!
Yum Louise, that geranium is gorgeous. The gentle glazing is so soft.
Here I was, watching the beauty of your art unfold and listening to your words, and thinking about the people I know and care about who would benefit from them. Then you quoted Benjamin Franklin “You may delay, but time will not”!! Suddenly I realised I was the person you were talking to. I was the person who would benefit from your words and honest reflection.
Up to this point I’ve loved, but felt separate from artists I’ve watched on YT. Now I feel connected! Thank you.🥰
Thank you so much for your beautiful message Gail. That makes me so happy. 💖
I needed to hear that today! When you're looking to be taught, a teacher will be found ... and today you are definitely the voice that I needed to hear. So thank you for that, and now I'm going to revisit the painting that already has the first wash, and I'm avoiding painting the tricky bits for fear of messing that up. I nearly purchased some more painting supplies ...! As if that was going to help! Thank you Louise, you are a joy to watch 🙏🥰
Dear Louise, you’re so spot on. I’m thrilled to have found your channel and love listening to what you have to say. Thank you for sharing your experiences and thoughts, its always great to listen to another artist. God bless
I don't see flaws in your art. You have fabulous talent.
Sage advice.
I experience all of those "bad habits"
Thank you, for your wisdom.
You're a dear.
Thank you so much Sylph. 🥰
Thank you for your advice. I’m guilty of all of those bad habits. I will work on overcoming them!
I didnt realize so many of us struggle with those thoughts
Great advice. I've always like the phrase, "Comparisons are odious." Did a whole newsletter article on it once. Really, being creative requires such courage, doesn't it?
Thank you Paula. So true.
Thankyou Louise . I read that book feel the fear and do it anyway many years ago. It changed the way I think about many things in my life including art. Fear holds a lot of us back. Really enjoy your weekly videos...thankyou very much x
You are such a precious , beautiful woman. I appreciate your “realness”. Sharing the bloopers is so much fun. Appreciate you, darling woman.
Thank you for your lovely message Kimberly. 😘
I have all these bad habits and I am tired of these bad habits.
Me too Yogini- bad habits be gone!
@@LouiseDeMasi Amen
All so true. Everyone said watercolour way too hard. I thought just try hard. I am getting better. I enjoy your videos. Many thanks
Thanks Anne. I'm glad you're improving.
Your talking to me! I have worked on these things and I have grown a lot. Every thing you said is so true, love your techniques, I have learned lots from you.
Thank you Patricia. 💛
Funny how so many of us who love you feel these feelings too. Thanks for the advice and the quotes! Fear of failure 😣 woof! My biggest one. I am going to hunt down that book you showed us… do it ANYWAY! Paul Atreides ( Frank Herbert’s Dune) had a mantra about fear… as silly as I feel,I say it in my head and I move forward and accept the failed paintings as practice… ( or what I need to face in life)😂. Oh that was just a study stop fussing. It’s ONLY paper should hang in my studio… thanks again for all you share. Never lose the joy.
Dear Louise, I love your motivational videos especially those related to artists. I am the king of procrastination and it's been almost over a year since I've picked up my brushes. I will get back to painting very soon and be motivated. Thanks for this video.
Beautiful painting and equally so are the tutorial. I never give up but oh my goodness the thoughts and feelings can be so debilitating. And it’s very easy to allow those negative thoughts to overcome your confidence.
They certainly can. Some of us hold ourselves back because of thoughts we have. It's easy to get tangled up in them but life is too short. I've learned over the years to not pay too much attention to the negative thoughts I have. Thanks Elizabeth.
Louise, I love your videos. I have just started watercolor painting after nearly 45 years since school and found your tutorials and tips very helpful and inspirational. I also love your humorous outtakes at the end and love your Aussie accent. ❤❤
Thank you Richard! I'm happy that my videos have helped and inspired you in your watercolor painting journey. Thank you for watching and for your kind words!
Thank you Louise, guilty as charged. Great advice. Another obstacle for me is when some artist do tutorials and say they’re easy or for beginners, but when you try to do them you can’t do them. I guess there are different levels of beginners but I seem to take it to heart. Love your painting ❤
My pleasure Colleen and thank you. I'm guilty of that I think (sorry)! I find it hard to classify tutorials. You're right - there are varying degrees of beginners. Some beginners are just starting and others have been painting for a year or so. Don't take it to heart - learn at your own pace. It's not an easy medium to use. ❤️
Hi Louise, I read Sue Jeffers book a number of years ago and have applied that particular mantra of ‘ Feel the fear and do it anyway, your safety net will appear’ to some important life changing decisions. In this particular video your advice and guidance about how to approach difficulties experienced with art is so supportive and delivered with such kindness. Thank you.
✨️🕊🙂👋
Yes! We all heard you, but we need to be reminded of self-critical talk & thoughts! Thank you for sharing 😊... as a beginner with only a year painting, I haven't painted in 6 months...8 months... I'm struggling... I still watch all my favorites, but now it's just like starting over... but that's ok. You're a blessing! With love from a California Gramma ❤️
I can't believe that you have all the same fears and worries about art that I (and probably everyone else watching this video) have, and yet your art is absolutely amazing.
Would you be willing to do a video showing your progress from when you first started watercolour painting, up until now please ?
Perhaps showing a painting when you made a breakthrough moment, or say a painting every 4, or six months as your artistic journey progressed, showing your progress, and some of your failures. It's kind of reassuring to know that an artist as accomplished as yourself also has self doubt and the fear of failure. Thanks for sharing as it makes me feel less of a failure with my art.
That's a wonderful idea and thank you for suggestion it. Yes absolutely I will. 💕
Thank you. Now to get the paint and brushes out again!
Lol- good for you. Have fun. Thanks Beth!
oh wow I see myself 100% in all these items!!
OMG!! Did you totally call me out about using online shopping for things I don't need as a way to procrastinate?? And no less, one of my reasons for procrastination: lack of confidence. You've touched on some very important subjects and this was of great value.
Louise I love watching your videos and the bloopers. Is nice to see that other people we look up to are human too and they can make mistakes too. Thank you.
This made me cry bc these principles pretty much mirror my life right now since trying to make a life since cancer.
Sometimes you hear just the right words at just the right time. Thank you!
As I sat down today I prepared to do a workshop on landscape painting. ( out of my comfort zone) I sketched it out and literally could not mix the first paints to begin. I was that apprehensive. Bombarded by negative thoughts of wasting good art paper and spending a tidy sum of money on a workshop I was afraid to do. The fear of failure was so bad that I did not even try. I found other things to do I thought was more important.
Your words resonated so soundly that tomorrow I will TRY but maybe on less expensive paper. I love to paint and felt the loss of accomplishment be it poor or good.
Thank you so much for your encouraging kind and thoughtful words.
I love your straightforward calm approach to painting and the reality of the habits we all have. I am guilty of some of these bad habits also, especially procrastination. The painting is beautiful!
Watercolour for me is like exactly a Jigsaw puzzle 🧩
Your sharing is great. I am guilty of all those habits you speak of. BTW your personal growth is shining in your videos and you've made great.stridws in coming out of your shell. You are an inspiration!
Thank you for sharing your experiences with the growth you have achieved and are continuing to strive towards with your art. These recent videos are tremendously appreciated and inspiring for me as I continue to practice and grow. I would like to also say that when I saw the photo of this painting in your newsletter, it truly appears as though the brush is reaching deep into the inner fold of the petal. Perfect creation of depth in the loveliest way possible.
Thank you for your help, Louise. I'm guilty of all the bad habits you said...
Hello from Greece. I am seeing you must. My English is not perfect but I like watercolour painting. I am not an artist but I try and you give me so much seeing you ..thanks a lot.
LOLLLL!!! The very first bad habit that came to my head was "imposter syndrome" (aka comparing your work to the work of others and thinking you're crap, thinking you're not an actual artist and are just an imposter). I had made up my mind to put that in the comments if you didn't mention it, but what was bad habit number 1 AND number 2?.............🤣🤣🤣🤣 This was a great and VERY motivational video, Louise. All artists just starting their journey, and those that are well into it for that matter, should watch this. Thank you!☺☺☺
Your honest empathetic transparency is refreshing. Thank you for your encouragement.❤
Louise! sometimes I think you have a direct line to my brain and can read my thoughts.
At times I listen to watercolor CZcams channels as I paint... Today was Louise De Masi day. I needed this today! Thank you!
Hi Louise, great little video! I am the Great Procrastinator, not because of fear of failure...but been going thru a stressful time, & need to get into my painting zone. Feeling kind of blocked with thoughts. I know taking the 1st step of picking up my brush will take me to my happy place! 😊
I took your advice- and half-way through the video I stopped it and went into my studio and got to work for an hour- and then I came back to finish. Such words of wisdom spoke to me.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful and helpful video. I’ve been fighting that nagging negative voice in my head saying, “You’re just really ‘not that good’.” It deflates me, honestly. But then I remind myself that I’ve not even been painting a year! I’ve got watercolor books I haven’t even read. New subscriber here! Love from Texas ❤!
Your painting is stunning! Thank you for your honesty. I struggle with each of those bad habits, but have never organized my thoughts in this way about them, so thank you!
You can always fix mistakes with painting!!
If you don't mind me saying this I'm a young artist and healing this really gives me motivation to keep going thank you
That makes me very happy to know. Thanks you Cody. Keep at it!
I am not a painter, I am however an adult pencil colorist who is constantly striving/working on achieving realistic looking images (not where I would like to be, yet, but getting there, with improvement every year) and honestly these four bad habits you speak of applies “all across the board”, in all aspects of art, regardless of the mediums we use. As well as in life, in general. I 100% agree with each and every one of them and have mentioned these things many times over, in various ways, over the years. Great video!
Oof! Me in all the habits, thanks for the motivation talk, Louise!
This was great I have struggled with self esteem and confidence issues all my life and have read many self help books. I am always trying to improve myself. This really touches on what I have been doing for two years. I have been parlayed with fear for 7 months. You are very compassionate. This has really helped me❤😊
Your advice can be applied to any aspect of life, not just painting. I'm trying to practice self-compassion, and I can't say it's working for me yet, but I'll keep trying. You have a very soothing voice.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this video...I have been 'stuck' for a number of months, suffering from ALL these unfortunate habits. To hear positive, logical and clear solutions to the way out of the doldrums is a gift you have shared with all of us who have gained from your time and altruism.
Love from the Isle of Wight, UK. ❤
Thanks for sharing the bloopers. Makes your advice even more helpful.
I've mastered the art of procrastination. Thank you for the tips. I've really appreciated your journey, in art and life. ❤ Life lessons, the journey and not the destination. Smell the roses.
I love this, Louise. Maybe you saw my post about this very thing, or maybe I just got lucky! I’m so thrilled to be learning to paint with watercolor, and I’m also too hard on myself at times. But when I step back and think about it, I have improved, and I’m becoming more confident and consistent. I’ve also kept my paintings. There were a couple in particular that I thought were really good, but now I see that while they aren’t bad, I’ve definitely improved.
I know these things you are telling us are true, but every so often it’s helpful to be reminded. I’m definitely saving this for the next time I’m having self doubt or just feeling discouraged. Thank you! ❤
Thanks Anne. I'm so glad you can see how you've improved. Seeing improvement encourages us to keep going. 🥰
These rules apply to all phases of life not just art. In the workplace for all professions! Thank you. Procrastination is my downfall!
I have been painting for one whole month now. I've learned a lot from you but today I've learned a great deal. I was very critical of myself even while I'm painting I'm saying I don't know why I'm trying is I can't do it. You've given me hope. And I've enjoyed watching you paint those flowers.
Love the tutorial as those bad habits totally stop you forwarding your joys and confidence .
Thank you! I needed to hear this.
Thank you so much! I needed to hear this 🙏
We only fail when we fail to try. Another great video Louise. And as so many others have said, it’s like you know me and all my doubts.
Thank you, I needed to hear this.
You always inspire. Thank you for your advice and allowing us to enjoy your watercolor in action. ❤
Thank you so much, Louise! You have inspired me a great deal. And showing your outtakes shows me you are for real!!
Thank you for sharing ! Love your paintings ! You are very helpful
Louise what a great inspiration you are.
Thanks Louise! All great advice ! thanks so much!!! Your painting is really beautiful!!! ❤
Thank you for this video Louise. 🥰
Gosh Louise, seems you can see directly into my brain! Thank you for the advice ❤
Oh my - this video is so very good!
Thanks for this!
Thanks for your channel, Louise!
Thank you for sharing!❤️
❤ Thank You for this material.
Thank you ! I totally agree. Forever going to keep trying ❤
Loved to watch it 😍
Thank you for your wisdom. So enabling!
Words to live by! Thank you
Louise, I love your authenticity and thank you for sharing as I was going through that same thing yesterday but with a different rural scene. Thank you!
Thank you Louise, you’ve described a lot of my fears in painting and how to get over them, again thanks!
Thank you for this video. Such great advice. And your painting is absolutely beautiful. :)
Thank you so much 🙏🏻💕
Thank you for the wonderful pep talk❤
Such a helpful video Louise! Thank you so much
Thank you so much Louise for such wonderful advise , i have struggled in all these areas & feel so encouraged & grateful to you after watching your video. 🤗
Great words of advice Louise. Thank you.
Thanks a lot for the beautiful advice on this video. Wonderful painting btw!! ❤😮
Great video. Thanks so much.
