NBA Players and Analysts Who Were RIGHT About Luka Doncic's Success!!

  • After an amazing rookie season that culminated with the 2019 Rookie of the Year honors, Luka Doncic doubled down with an even better sophomore year in which he was firmly in the league MVP conversation and had one of the most amazing playoff debuts in NBA history. As we already discussed in a previous video, there were some former players and so-called analysts that did not believe all of the Luka hype they heard before the 2018 NBA Draft. However, there were other more intelligent players and analysts that understood the reason why some people called him the best player in the class - even though he didn’t play college basketball, unlike most of his fellow prospects - and predicted Doncic’s skills would translate very well into the NBA.
Today, we will take a look at NBA players and analysts who predicted Luka Doncic’s success in the NBA. But before we do, make sure to hit that like button and subscribe to the channel if you haven’t already!
The single most common and determining fact why some analysts had Luka Doncic very high in their draft boards, and knew he was going to be the top player from this class, was the fact that by age 19 Doncic had already been the Euroleague MVP. Some didn’t know how his style of play would translate into the NBA, but other scouts, executives, and GMs knew how good he would be given the teenager had already proved himself in a big stage. New Orleans Pelicans Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations, David Griffin, was one of those impressed executives, and he had very high praise for Doncic on 2018 Draft night.
“This is a guy who’s as prolific as you can be at 19 years of age in Euroleague competition. He’s the Euroleague MVP. There is no higher league outside the NBA than the Euroleague and he’s the very best player on the league on a championship caliber team.
Excuse me? Did David Griffin have a time machine or something? He nailed Luka Doncic’s game breakdown right after he was drafted, and even if you hear that today in 2020 the description is still 100% accurate.
“I just love it that he’s done it against men, on a big stage, with the bright lights, with a lot at stake. A lot of these younger American players can’t say they’ve been able to do that. And so, he’s somebody - because he’s been so visible from such a young age."
As he put it, a guy like Doncic, who has elite offensive skills but can still work on the defensive end of his game, has what it takes to be a star in the league. You look at young guards like Bradley Beal, Devin Booker, C.J. McCollum, these guys are not much better defensively than Luka is.
Former player and also NBA TV analyst, Steve Smith, rounded out the post-Draft reactions. Although he did bring up how he still wanted to see Doncic develop his body and athleticism, he still agreed Luka had everything it takes to succeed.
“You’re supposed to be picked apart when you’re a high draft pick. And I think he would take it, like you said, being a third pick."
ESPN senior writer Zach Lowe, widely considered one of the best basketball writers out there, had some advice for those who decided to pass on Doncic: “If the concerns about his Europe contract are legitimate, the concerns about the off-court stuff I guess are legitimate. I’m not hanging out with the guy, I don’t know.
But with Devin Booker, another ball-dominant guard, already on the team, Phoenix wasn’t quite sure about Luka. The Sacramento Kings, who picked number two, weren’t sure either. They had Vlade Divac, one of the best European players ever and a Serbian executive guru that knew all about Doncic, wasn’t quite sure about him either. They already had two bright guards in De’Aaron Fox and Buddy Hield and they weren’t sure about adding Doncic.
Drafting Doncic didn’t make sense. But they couldn’t pass on him. The Mavericks were rewarded instantly. And after realizing how they had just drafted their franchise player of the future in the post-Dirk Nowitzki era, they re-tooled the whole team around him, trading away Dennis Smith and Harrison Barnes to bring in Kristaps Porzingis, Seth Curry, and Tim Hardaway Jr. They handed the keys of their offense to Luka, a teenage Euroleague MVP, and it worked.
Did you think Luka would become a star this quickly? Thank you for watching another Swish Central video, and join us next time for more NBA basketball content.

You all somehow missed that Luka Doncic was 18 years old when he was chosen as one of the best 5 players (Goran Dragic was MVP) of Eurobasket 2017 when Slovenia got gold by winning all games. At 18 years old he played against NBA players like Bogdanovic, the Gasol brothers, Lauri Markkanen, Porzingis, Boban Marjanovic, Ricky Rubio ... again in the way that he was chosen into top 5 players of Eurobasket 2017!!!!

The problem with Americans in general, is that they judge player's quality by if he played in college or not, if he's an American .. And the worst thing, if he's an "athlete".
Every human who was watching the euroleague knew he was something special from the minute he stepped on the big boys court at 15-16 years old.
True, the game style is different and for a lot of great european players is hard to make the adjustments and to play the same in the nba. But for luka it was never been a problem.. He easily managed to play his game all the time. In madrid and in the national team.
The most amazing thing about him is that he never needed the time to get use to the pressure when he started in the euroleague when he was 16.
It's like he made to handle pressure and it makes him better.

All through the history of mankind there were people who were born exceptional and truly gifted for ‘something’. That ‘something’ was their destiny, their calling and finally, if they were lucky enough to be able to consecrate their life to it, their fulfillment. I’m talking about Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo in art, about Tesla in science, Bach in music ..... all of them knew at a very young age what their calling was. So did Luka.
We’re talking about a boy who at ripe age of 13 decided to leave his parents, his home, his country to go to Real Madrid, Spain - where he didn’t know a living soul or how to speak one word of Spanish language. All for the sake of learning basketball. It was his decision too. His mom wouldn’t let him go, his granny couldn’t stop crying and his father wasn’t sure at all. They wanted him to wait for few more years before leaving family. But he decided to go and they finally gave in. How many grown up people do you know, capable of leaving everything they’ve ever known behind for uncertain future? That’s mark of greatness, specially at 13. Basketball is Luka’s drug of choice. He lives for basketball. It’s his destiny. He’s Michelangelo of basketball in the making and I expect basketball Sixtine chapel from him. If he stays healthy that is. NBA players have allready started to harm him, when nothing else works to stop him. They should think about it twice. If we take basketball from Luka, there is almost no Luka left. It’s a crime, similar to killing somebody. I hope they won’t succeed. I hope Luka will play for a long time in future making me smile! I’m waiting for your masterpieces Luka. Have fun!

I was lmao when I heard the phrases: "...with the bright lights, with a lot at stake..." and "in front of big crowds..." I think the majority of NBA fans have no idea how loud it can get in the Euroleague. The energy level and commitment from the average NBA fan is pretty low compared to the fanatical (and very loud) loyalty fans have for their own European team.
When playing in the Euroleague against a basketball team in countries like (in alphabetical order!!) Greece, Serbia and Turkey then you better be prepared to play in an inferno of noise, Bengal fire and an insane amount of fan energy. You better be prepared to go to war!
Luka Dončić started playing basketball professionaly against adults and played many matches in European atmospheres. He can handle the NBA. He's already played professional basketball in some of the most hostile atmospheres in teamsports.
You don't have to take my word for it of course. You can decide for yourselves.

So obviouly the euro league is by far the best after the nba of course but i dont think the chinese is the third best league in the world at all, there a re way better leagues in europe besides the euroleague.

Dallas drafted Dončič because Mark Cuban wants white players on his team, Steve Nash & Dirk Nowitzki before, and now Porzingis & Dončič. ✌
