    In 1914 Britain called, and you came. In 1939 Britain called again, and you came once more.
    But when you called, we looked away. Those who know, are ashamed.
    And rightly so.

      @Jan Pearson Jan, In fairness, it was the British government at the time rather than the British people as a whole, many of whom were, and are still, sympathetic to the white citizens of Rhodesia/ Zimbabwe.

      Not only them, in 1776 Britain preferred to shoot Americans than talk to them. In 1942 she told the Australians and New Zealanders they would have to be lost to Japan if it meant saving India and made a disgraceful scene when the Australians said they wanted their veteran divisions back for defence of their homeland. So the Anzacs allied with America instead. In 1965 she turned her back on the Rhodies. And then in 1973 Britain shafted the Commonwealth by disappearing behind the EEC tariff wall, for many including the Anzacs the UK was their largest export market. The arrogant snobs in Whitehall wouldn't know loyalty if they tripped over it and never gave a tinker's cuss for the overseas British. Yet the colonials sent all their young men and stripped their countries bare for Britain TWICE.

    "If you have tears, prepare to shed them now". Rhodesia with its splendid armed forces, including the superb Rhodesian Light Infantry seen here, was not defeated in the field - far from it - but was brought to its knees by a dirty betrayal by John Vorster of South Africa, who foolishly was persuaded by Henry Kissinger into closing down Rhodesia's crucial routes through South Africa for her exports and imports. The details of this treachery, stupid as it was for South Africa too, are in Ian Smith's book, "The Great Betrayal".

    • @rethguals
      @rethguals Před 5 lety +6

      Never defeated?
      ZANLA basically succeeded in all their metrics, while Rhodesia's simply didn't matter. While the latter were self-congratulating themselves over "kill ratios" and Fireforce operations, the former had basically forced the white population to shrink, effectively controlled the countryside, and were gradually becoming more and more numerous and better armed as the war went on. Smith's ridiculous "Never in my lifetime!" speech simply ensured it was only a matter of time.
      By 1978, Rhodesia had basically lost control of the whole country outside urban areas. It was unsafe to travel anywhere without an armed convoy, and even the old resorts became deserted and unsafe. The white population was shrinking to unsustainable levels, sick of the declining security situation, loss of their standard of living, and fed-up of being on constant "6 weeks on, 6 weeks off" call-ups. They'd basically lost any potential support from the black population with the failed "protected village" program, which separated villagers from their fields and forced them into unsanitary camps which they could not adequately protect.
      A classic example of a failure to adapt to asymmetric warfare. It's a shame, because the consequences are still felt today
