I'm currently working in the place where we used to make these little shitboxes, Proton Shah Alam. It's funny that I didn't knew we exported the Saga BLM (S16) to Australia back in 09. Also fun fact, this car is based on the Proton Savvy platform and evolved into the Saga FLX and Saga VVT, which is still on production until this very day! This car has an Akashi Kikai 5 speed which is tbh the worst manual version for any Proton. I currently owned a Saga VVT 5 speed manual which uses a Getrag 5 speed that doesn't have that stupid long throws and gear stick giggle (because the linkage in the AK 5MT is a solid metal rod).

    • @arteonyx
      @arteonyx Před 10 dny +6

Hey! My dad had a Savvy back in 2008 (... or 2009 I don't remember) and a Preve in 2012. It was manual, had dual airbags, 6 spoke alloys, and the straight-line rear end (before it changed to fit the proton badge shape). I thought it was a nice-looking hatchback, and even now as a college student I really want one with the manual. Sadly, I'm currently in Indonesia and there's barely any chance I'll ever buy or even see a Proton.

As a Malaysian, I'm so happy to see a Malaysian car in Garbage Time! Your tests are very fair, and you didn't tone down your comedy to be more PC. Awesome job.
You can see the Malaysian design philosophy throughout the car. To really understand why things are designed the way they are, people first need to understand that Malaysians have really strong family values, and desire affordable no-nonsense products.
Malaysians generally speaking want to have a family, ie. get married and have kids. They also want to protect their family for as long as they can, ie. grandparents and children of adult ages still living with them. Of course, this doesn't apply to every family but when you see it, it's considered the norm.
Just being honest, our (Malaysian) economy back then isn't the best in the world. Comparing Malaysia's GDP to Australia in 2009, we were 5x below Australia's. Furthermore, with ludicrously high import taxes on cars, the everyday man who's trying to save money won't be caring about the latest and greatest features in the automobile world. We just want something that works and doesn't burn a hole in our wallet.
Firstly to address the cheap plastic interior. It is obviously to reduce cost. For anyone with kids out there, you definitely know how children will find a way to scratch anything. Doesn't matter what wood, leather, steel, or silicon trimming, they somehow always find a way to scratch it. Therefore, less emphasis was placed for the material design of the interiors as it would only make it more expensive.
Next, the misting cold aircond. Being that the country is located at the equator, we have a tropical climate characterized by hot temperatures (averaging above 30c) and high humidity all throughout the year. This combination creates a one two punch that requires every vehicle's aircond to be able to immediately cool a hot car baked under the sun, and maintain cool temperatures during long distance driving.
Why does long distance driving comes into consideration? The majority of Malaysians are Muslims, and during the muslim celebration of Eid al-Fitr, many of them need to drive back hundreds of kilometres to celebrate in their hometown. Certainly, this can also be applied to Malaysian Chinese and and Malaysian Indian who go home for Lunar New Year celebrations and Deepavali respectively.
Apart from that, malaysian cars have an abundance of cupholders. To this day, we are obsessed with having cupholders. For one, you now know that Malaysia is hot, so we most likely carry our own water bottle each, and each one gets a compartment for quick access. Two, drive throughs and takeaway culture is very strong, with a preference to keep our drinks safe and readily available during driving. The number of cupholders often allows 4 people (a family unit) to have their own drinks stored safely.
Lastly, the large door entrances are essential for three reasons. Firstly, it makes it easier for people to help someone disabled entering the car. Think about caring for your elderly parents and you need to take them to their hospital appointment. Having a large door where you don't bump your head every single time is a blessing. Secondly, imagine carrying a baby or a toddler with you. Having to scoot down to enter through a smaller door can be quite stressful. Thirdly, it is common to also use our cars for cargo. Not only for people who move houses, but also for the entrepreneurs to transport their inventory to hawker stalls or offices.

Hateful thing. Somehow, the automatic is even worse.

They did the same thing mechanically back in the day by using dashpots. When the throttle closed, it would hit the dashpot lever, and the dashpot would provide resistance that slowed the throttle blade gently to a close instead of allowing it to snap shut. This helped reduce NOx emissions.

Out of all the cars sold in Australia, I really didn't expect Wade to buy this. I currently drive this (because I'm Malaysian of course) but the spec here are pretty different.
Mine is the 1.3L N-line Auto, which basically means it's the 2nd cheapest trim model with an auto gearbox & gosh I hate the gearbox. It's a 4-speed & cruises at 120 km/h at 3.5k RPMs. Imagine doing that for nearly 3 hours in a 7 hour trip. Here, it is only sold with the 1.3L CamPro engine (except for the commercial taxi trim) but this engine is slightly improved from the 1.6L which they removed the torque dip by adding a variable length intake.
There's also no heater since we don't have seasons, the aircond only goes out the round vents & no where else, there's no reverse sensors & has the same wing mirrors as Wade's (higher trim models have electric controls).
But overall, it's a pretty reliable & surprisingly good handling car for its price
Edit: forgot to mention that mine doesn't have any airbags or any other safety systems apart from seatbels

Fun fact: This is and still is, one of the most basic car for sale in Malaysia, the old model already obsolete, and now continue with all new model. At it's time of launching and selling, it is actually a better car than their competitor MYVI, and far better than their similar counterfeit car Viva/Axia. For A-Seg/B-Seg sedan, it actually has bigger interior, more comfortable seat than a similar gen Toyota Vios. The auto transmission is nothing to say about, but the 5 speed manual transmission is very fun to drive. The handling of the car is pretty good too, at least miles better than their competitor MYVI and Viva/Axia. I know many want to say Bezza is the their true competitor, but that is already in the much later stage. However, this car is still a better car than a said Bezza A-Seg sedan. I still remember at the launching time, the very base model is something not over AUD 10K, with not so less accessory to start with, you have power steering, drive by wire, 5 speed manual, a CD radio, air conditioning, 1.3 Campro IAFM engine, driver and passenger power windows, no sport rim, black color "sporty" front and back bumper, stable cruising even on high way, just that the fuel consumption is on the higher side, and it is a high revving car. Yeah the Jumbuck was popular in Australia, rarely see them anymore though so I guess they didn't last. Or all their owners followed the trend and bought Hiluxes and Rangers etc.

@@AfferbeckBeats here in the uk, we still see them about, they are usually beat up, but I don’t think they were ever popular in the first place, as people would rather just buy a mondeo or focus with a 1.8 diesel. :( rip cool cars

"The Car" is the Casio f-91w of watches. Cheap, well built, functional, lasts forever and does exactly what it was designed to do.
The Proton is the cheap kids toy watch. Struggles to do anything well but technically functions, has numerous issues being cheaply built out of garbage plastic and will break easily.
