It gets better, but, yeah, I can feel your frustration. Zunnamer episodes were a bad rehash of the Oolong first appearance, so dragged out and unnecesarily complicated.
It's worth mentioning that Akira Toriyama didn't have much involvement with GT. He just came up with the designs and some story ideas but that's it.
It's also worth mentioning that he said thanks to the excellent staff he was able to take a back seat , also that " some story ideas " were the black star db arc that is the most hated one since he named the show grand tour , and that he brought back the turning to kids thing in full effect this time , and the initial Vegeta design as explicitly stated " designed the initial main cast " which Aimin was making fun of .
I'm getting tired of this " whatever he touched turned to gold and whatever isn't gold wasn't touched by him " , he was the goat but he was also a real human , he made this awesome franchise but he also made stuff that isn't this liked or popular , he created most of the awesome stuff in this and he also created several things that are disliked by a lot of fans . Stop this spineless glorifying of him and let him rest with grace .

I actually kinda like the giant and the Zoonama episodes~ I thought the bees were super cute, and the giant was kinda fun. Zoonama is just amusing because it's an homage to the original Oolong episode back in Dragonball~ He's also a reference to that old legend in Japan where namazu catfish are said to be able to predict earthquakes~

Funimation knew the beginning of GT was bad so cut an episode that summarizes everything and starts the Baby arc on episode 1. They later released the normal episodes as "The Lost Episodes"

They definitely tried to recreate the formula of OG Dragon Ball in GT. Goku is Goku, Pan is Bulma, Trunks is Yamcha and Gero is Oolong/Puar.
The biggest problem is that they just jumped back instead of trying to make a true continuation. But now that we have Super, maybe Toriyama always wanted to continue the canon but wanted the time to figure it all out rather than making it work week to week.
Bs , there was no super magical secret sauce , dbz changed the majority's expectations and preferences and there's nothing wrong with admitting that , black star db arc was never going to work coming after dbz as a part of main series not some non canon movie by the side or whatever made it completely misplaced . I literally left og db on hold long ago cuz i couldn't make it to 20 episodes with how boring it felt , i was able to rewatch gt's black star db arc without getting as bored cuz they at least sprinkled in some dbz like fights in there . They did their attempt at making it more digestible but it just wasn't gonna work .
This is not a defense for the black star arc of dbgt , the fact that they tried that after dbz was inherently a bad business idea and critising this choice is completely valid , but that WAS part of what makes it a true continuation and the final expansion , it has both og db and dbz , again didn't work is a different thing but that's literally how one makes a true continuation , can't just be saying things to say things , people didn't want some true continuation they wanted dbz these are the facts.
What canon ? GT has been an anime canon and before Super it was THE anime canon . " Time to figure it all out " What a piss u're really trying to say he took that many years just to come up with BoG ? The man was tired by deadlines by the end of dbz and didn't want to make anymore at the time then did some things for GT and took the backseat and appreciated it for what it was. Then he saw the absolute abomination that was evolution...
He doesn't need a whole decade to start dbs lol he was simply fine with leaving things as they were before evolution .

Yeah. From my knowledge, the first GT arc 12 eps is irredeemably awful. Super 17 Arc has a couple cool scenes but is mediocre overall. It's not until the Baby arc and Shadow Dragon arc where the iconic GT stuff is. And even though those arcs are significantly better, they are still flawed.
Baby is the only good arc . Majority of shadow dragon arc is worse than super 17.

The first arc was meant to try and capture the more adventurous globe trotting aspects of original Dragon Ball. Of course it wasn't very well received so around halfway through the show shifted to the more action focused of DBZ. That was more or less around the time Baby was introduced.
