  • Projects are rarely ever straightforward, and setting up and earning my new knitting machine ribber was especially frustrating at times. However, I love jumping in the deep end with new machinery and I'm so happy with my new vintage sweater!

Engineering knits is a place for people who enjoy all kinds of vintage and antique crafts - from sewing to knitting, crochet to embroidery I like to try it all. I definitely have a preference for historical fibre crafts, and it is my dream to one day make an entire outfit from sheep to sweater. I hope you enjoy watching me and my favorite companion, Nutella, struggle through some fascinating projects!

My grandmother had a knitting machine but it was sold when she died. I'm sad I was too young to understand the value of the machine then.
I remember once she wanted to show me how to use it but she was already so demented she didn't know how 😔

As a fellow new machine knitter, I'm really comforted that it's not super easy for you either 🙈 But the joy of machine knitting is making mistakes and fixing them and loving the final piece, even if it's not perfect because no one else can tell anyway! I really love this vintage sweater and the recycling of salvaged yarn is so unique and beautiful.

The sweater looks great! Don’t feel too disheartened. I have been machine knitting for almost 20 years and to this day, there are times I forget to set something, or check the yarn is threaded correctly, I go across and woosh! Al drops on the floor. It happens to the best of us, we are only human.
Regarding the sleeves, you would of had to start large and decrease, to do that on the machine and probably need the use of a garter bar to easily make the multiple decreases across the first few rows. However, whichever method works for you and the great thing about machine knitting, is you are able to combine hand knitting and machine knitting. Many machine knitters are typically prolific hand knitters too.
Keep at it, it’s lots of fun! Well done. X

This video is such a coincidence as I set up my knitting machine and ribber today to knit a new sweater! You are totally right about the machines being heavy, I didn’t screw my clamps down properly and both the machines fell on me and bruised my leg when I tried to hold it up oops 😅

  • @TracyKMainwaring
    @TracyKMainwaring Před 10 měsíci +2

I was just thinking, you could always do the sleeves in reverse. When you get up to the part where you were to attach more and stitches and increase, you would still do that but would do decreases instead. You have to move stitches over to fill the gaps, but it's very doable. Decreasing is almost always easier on a machine than increasing

  • @maniacalmoz

Well done. Beautiful sweater. May i offer you some friendly advice, in case you want to try the sleeve technique again in the future? On the row before your increases, increase your stitch size a couple of clicks on the carriage. Obviously, you'd need to swatch it, to find the best settings for the yarn you're using. And i dare say, the increased stitch size will block out, or be unnoticeable. Good luck; there is a steep learning curve when using a knitting machine, which is amplified when you include the ribber. But stick with it, as you know, it saves alot of time and produces high quality results.

Ribbers can be scary! Mine came with my machine that I bought through a chance encounter. I had 3 young kids, and only used the MB for a few years. Finally, I had my husband set it up-- he's a mechanical engineer LOL. My 327, you need to push up the RB a smidge to get it to latch but it does stay.
With my bulky, I had to get the RB separately and it was not shipped properly, had some damage, and was missing some things. The main carriage had always had some issues, and then i broke something and now it can only tuck in one direction. I never get to use them because of a cramped room. Maybe someday. I used to blog all about it, going back to 2006!

if you're having trouble near the edges, check the tension on your upper mast. Sometimes the yarn gets caught and there isn't enough slack at the start of the row. However, your reasoning is also very sound with the yarn not being able to cope with the increases! It's so frustrating because you're automatically past the break before you see it due to the carriage.
Using a hair dryer might free up the mechanics of the two accessories.
Also, ribbers have sponge bars too, if I remember. So give that a check.
Isn't it funny how people think a knitting machine is "cheating"? 😅

How sad is it that I saw the preview and said "Oh that's a Silver Reed ribbing bed"
FYI regarding the accessories. 90% of the time the issue is old grease that's hardened. I'm guessing once you take them apart, clean and relive them they'll work fine.

I've had a Toyota KS901 since the 80s... I have the ribber and the tilt table... The whole shebang. Not used it since early 90s 😂 no space to set it up. 🙄
