I've seen them in 2012 in Toulouse, France. Honestly one of the best rock show I've ever seen ! They played for 3 F***IN HOURS, givin everything they had. It took time for the album to grow on me, I just had to get to the idea that the old GnR were no more, but it worth the effort, and to see them play this masterpiece album live, along with the old classic was just insane. And those three guitarist, my god ! Fortus, DJ Ashba, Bumblefoot, they all had their moments during the show, and you can tell these 3 were very happy to play together.

This is my favorite album. Most of the tracks and others not on it leaked in 2019, they were older 1999-2001 mixes and sounded better in my opinion. I agree the 2008 album is overproduced. I wish the bass was higher in the mix too. Keep in mind by 2008 they had another album worth of material but it didn’t materialize into a release, unfortunately. Not yet, anyways, aside from two reworked and released in 2021. (Hard Skool EP with Absurd aka Silkworms.

Honestly, Guns N' Roses' speedballed downhill after Izzy left. I know many people fawn over Slash's guitar playing, it is fucking incredible, but what made GNR real special was that tightass rhythm section, and Izzy's songwriting ability with Axl. I feel like he is pretty underappreciated for those, probably because he was never a full on showboat.
As for Chinese Democracy...yikes in a bucket. This album should have been an "Axl Rose Presents" album, because it's just him and a gazillion other session musicians on it. That's not to take away from the album per say, there are moments here and there that are very good, and Axl's voice is noice, but it isn't GNR to me. Obviously, he retains the use of the GNR name and branding, and if it was branded as a solo project it wouldn't have sold nearly as many copies as it did, but my lord is this album underwhelming.
    Good vid chief 😎

I am a die hard gnr fan since 1994, even when slash left in 96 I was still curious to see what Axl would put out with a new lineup, I was also a NIN fan so I was even more curious, but year after year nothing, when the record finally came out it was at a time I wasn't even that interested in the band anymore, most of the tracks had already been played live and leaked online since 2001. There's just no chemistry with the musicians he assembled, they're all good musicians in their own rights but as a collective its all over the place, not to mention all the would be producers that came and went since the late 90's. Its such a forgettable album and a forgettable lineup, for example Tommy Stinson was in the band from 1998 to 2015, Gilby Clarke was in the band from 1991 to 1994 and he is more remembered as a member of guns n' roses and never played on an original track. The story behind the album is more memorable than the album itself for sure, I've heard about new music being put together with slash and duff but can't help but feel bad for guys like DJ ashba, Tommy Stinson, Ron Bumblefoot Thal, etc... who recorded tons of additional material in the years they were with GNR that has yet to see the light of day and unfortunately for them may never see the light of day.

Just saw them in person a month ago, they preformed TWAT and holy shit! The crowd loved it and Axl gave it his all. Please relisten to it when you have a few. I recommend to read the history of this album creation in wiki, worthy read. Why many bands split up/members quit… usually it’s because people themselves change, grow up, mature, change their views and likes and preferences. It’s a natural process within all of us and musicians aren’t exception, they are people, they get tired of writing the same music or keeping the same vibe album after album, you can only ride the same wave 2, maybe 3 albums(which the did), then it gets old to both musicians and listeners. Axl wanted a change, new elements, new direction if you will. They all changed and got into solo projects let’s call it what it is, including Slash forming more bands which didn’t sound like GNR either. I’d say dismissing CD outright wouldn’t be genuine or fair to Axls talent. He did heavily co-produced the album and even worked on final mastering. You know what that takes? Musicians don’t usually get involved in mastering, mastering engineer does that. That takes real passion and care for how your material is going to sound at the end… if anything after listening to CD recently I realized Axl wasn’t just one of the best vocalists of his time or rock music in general, he was a true artist and a perfectionist when it comes to sound and vision of the material he puts out. So for me there’s no point comparing it to classic GNR… that classic GNR era was good, but it was over, dead, gone. What came out after being 10 years in the making and multiple very talented people involved is a very unique and big sounding album that I now trully appreciate. Solo off There was a time alone is one of the best solos I've heard.

I have to disagree with your assessment of the Use Your Illusion albums. They weren't as good as Appetite for Destruction, and they would have been better if they had made one album of all the best tracks, but they were good albums individually. Sure there were some songs that were duds: My World and Get in the Ring, and we certainly didn't need two versions of Don't Cry, with the only difference being the lyrics, but I can honestly put either of these albums in and listen to the whole album, and I can be picky about listening to subpar tracks.

The Spaghetti Incident? - "Why record a bunch of punk classics with a glossy sound?" - They were purposefully trying to get those bands PAID. This has been covered in a few books now. They saw it as an opportunity for a "stop-gap", like they used LIES for, AND they realized they could get a bunch of broke and undervalued (by the industry, at least) Punks PAID. BIG TIME. BY THE INDUSTRY THAT UNDERVALUED THEM. That? Is a punk thing to do. LOL So yeah, that is why. \m/

    Lighter side: November Rain - Yesterdays - Don't Cry - Since I Don't Have You - Civil War - The Garden - 14 Years - Breakdown - Knockin' on Heaven's Door - Estranged.
21 songs, each side roughly similar length. Tough to leave out a few like Dust n' Bones and Bad Obsession, but it gets too long otherwise.

But when fans make their lists, no one can agree on which songs should be left off. One person's filler is a track someone else says they love! After 30 years, I wish there was even more stuff! I'd settle for My World and one version of Don't Cry being cut, but very happy to keep the rest.

Took him too long to make a shitty experimental album with a phantom lineup. At least Slash was still making good music during his time outta the band. Shakepit, Velvet Revolver, and the Conspirators. That’s what kept the bands name popular.

    • @ScoopedMids
      @ScoopedMids  Před rokem

The reunion was so successful because of nostalgia. Slash being there helped but it's just because boomers want to see a tall guy with a top hat. And GnR again we're doing fine because Axl had the name, not because Slash was off doing forgettable side projects. Believe me, having a name as iconic as GnR was the reason they kept selling tickets. That's why so many old bands get away with touring as classic bands with only one original member, if that.

@@ScoopedMids Nostalgia I’ll agree with, they haven’t actually been culturally relevant since the early 90’s. But Chinese democracy was also a forgettable and failed project in hindsight. And they weren’t making nearly as much cash on tour until Not In This Lifetime. Slash’s “forgettable” side projects had greater chart and commercial success, unlike Chinese Crapology.

They haven't been culturally relevant since the 90s I'll agree, including Slash. Kids, aren't bumping new Slash solo records. And the only thing Slash did that was more successful than CD was Velvet Revolver. And I'm more inclined to credit that groups success to Scott Weiland.

I did like 4 songs being
    Chinese democracy
    Better
    Street of dreams
    This i love
Going back to it now i dislike a bit less but i have to admit that those four are the only songs that i really like.

Hey, it’s art and people have their opinions. Chinese Democracy lacks genuine flavor to me. Appetite was as real as it gets and Illusions were more polished in spots but still are musically and lyrically very good. You can’t fake it with true rock fans. It’s definitely an interesting thought experiment to see where they would have gone with all five original members beyond Use Your Illusion. Certainly, November Rain, Don’t Cry and Estranged showed a different side and there would have been more of that but could they have continued to capture some of that raw energy on some tracks. I thought the Izzy tracks like 14 years, Double Talkin Jive and Dust n bones were solid, angsty tracks and they lost a lot when he left. I don’t know. I think to really make GNR as good as it can be, you need all 5 original members. They cut out when they should have been in their prime and they’ll never be able to get it back.

While I definitely agree with general consensus that Chinese Democracy is the worst GnR album without question, I actually like (or at least tolerate) most of it, it's simply the fact that GnR kept hitting home run after home run with few exceptions on their earlier albums. Under any other circumstances, it would've been pretty good all things considered, but the huge delay and other drama that surrounded it really killed it despite the music not sucking nearly as much as some people claim/claimed.
The different feel and style to original GnR, like other people have said, make it better imo to think of it like an Axl solo record (which is basically is anyway lmao) like some of the stuff Slash did after he left, something that's related to GnR but not *really* GnR.

I don't think Chinese Democracy is an outright bad album...but I rarely find myself listening to it. Two big reasons as to why are:
    1. The production is difficult to warm up to. Much like Peter Gabriel's "Up", Chinese Democracy was a decade plus in the making, and it sounds like it.
There's so much going on and it feels so sterile at times, it can seem kinda boring at times. (Though that's not always the case, obviously.)
    2. The songs just aren't that memorable. This is the bigger problem, without a doubt. The earlier GN'R songs often had a hook or catchy melody. If they didn't, they would get on by drama and an epic scope (see "Coma" for proof.) Here, nearly EVERY song tries to do that and it often feels "same-y". Which did not help it's reputation, which was already on the ropes thanks to the revolving-door-style lineup, and the constant delays driving what few fans they had left up a wall. I am glad it finally came out, and I do think it's a decent album, but it fell victim to its own hype.

As much as I like this album, I gotta say it's definitely not worth the 14 year wait. Half the songs sound like they were written and put together in an afternoon. I heard some of the demos from 1999, and they sounded just okay. If Axl released Chinese Democracy in 1999 with all the songs without saying these are demos, I think it would have had much better reception.
