This is called a peyote stitch. I use i for my native beading in my crafts...but now i can use the link that you provided to make really cute modern items instead of traditional patterns yay!

My suggestion is if you use one type of string and like how it looks keep using the same string...Like for me I use .007mm string I can't use any other type of string but that one cause if I use any other type of string my cuffs start to curve down when making them they don't look good and don't look good to give to people. This is just a helpful hint.

Nice tutorial. you do your patterns different than I do I do it in a ladder formation once I get past the second row. The needle idea is a good idea I'll have to try that now. its just a regular dawning needle isn't it?

Maybe if you picked out a simple pattern or something small they might be interested? I see these sorts of things marketed for young girls (6+). And if they don't have the patience to sit and wait to do it themselves, they can always help by sorting out colors, too!

what is the name of this bead?
This is not a kid's project: There's no way you'd be able to get kids to sit for this long and work with a needle painstakingly stitching each bead together, following detailed instructions, etc. I just don't want you to have your hopes up. It's really WAY too difficult for them. I'm guessing you don't have kids or you'd know this, but if you do, they could help out handing you things, etc!
It's a good gift for a kid though, I'm sure they'd love to wear one with their favorite character.
