Cedar is a readily available wood in the northeast. It has great resistance to both rot and insects. It also weathers beautifully. Since there are a lot of older homes, cedar was the wood of choice over the past couple centuries since they didn’t have fancy stuff like pressure treated, OSB, etc. That’s why it’s used there.

Being a builder in Massachusetts for many years I can say we use cedar shakes as well as cedar clapboards for siding for thier natural resistance to insects and water damage. Cedar shake siding and roofing up north (especially New England) was a popular choice going all the way back to colonial times due to it's nature resistance to rot and general weather resistance. However, these days nobody uses it for roofing, and only wealthy people will use it for siding due to it's cost, but also to maintain its historical aesthetics.

I've helped with two "waterproof" decks before. The first was a small front porch like that which had an intentional slope of about a half inch per foot and a sealed sheet of 1/8" ply under the boards with the boards running the same direction as the slope.
The second was built as a normal deck then had one inch per foot sloped tracks framed in with some 2x2 that could hold corrugated panels just under the deck boards and guide the water out to the side. The galvanized panels lasted about 15 years then got swapped for plastic.

In the BC Lower Mainland for 1989 built Townhouses we had cedar shakes for the roof. Then in 2006 they went to re-roof, remove shakes, put plywood down, new asphalt shingles.
I think at one time cedar shakes were cheaper than asphalt shingles, you didn't need plywood on the roof just strips of wood to nail the shakes on to.

Most important (as you did !!) don't nail on first and paint the wall later. It is a hell of a job to paint in the narrow gaps (shingles shrink), plus no protection of the back-side. Our house in Nova Scotia is all Atlantic cedar shingles, so I know the burden :). For the back-side only paint the bottom inch. Both me and my wife can paint a full bundle of shingles in 20-30 mins, still a lot of work. Here a technique for drying: lay them in a circle, 6' diameter and the thick part of the shingles facing outwards. Then put layer on layer, the painted ends hardly touch. We have had in the garage stacks up to four feet high. Another time we white-washed them, Fill the first bucket with 6" of paint/thinner mix and dump the shingles in. Then take (by the handful, wear gloves) all of them out and put 'paint down' in bucket two to let excess white-wash drip off. Lastly, put that stack in bucket three, but now upside down, so painted end upside. This prevents marks on the painted surfaces. Wait a minute and then move them to the drying pile. Paint collected in bucket 2 and 3 goes back into bucket 1. Using this method we did at least four bundles per hour.

You could add a hat that just say's "Arlo." Now that's a chapeau to be seen in.

@27:20 April Wilkerson had a similar project. A deck that needed to stop water from going past the deck. There was a product that acted like gutters under the boards. Seemed easy enough to install. And not much longer to reach a million subs. Congrats! Been along the ride for some time and love every minute of it!
