My 4th grade English teacher had our class read "Little House on the Prairie" as our reading material over one-quarter of the year. To go along with with the setting of the story, she let us have a Lumberjack Breakfast, right in our classroom. We made EVERYTHING, ourselves, from scratch. She showed us how to make butter, from scratch, in a canning jar. We poured heavy whipping cream and a little salt into the canning jar, put the lid on tight, and passed it from person to person around the room, taking turns shaking the jar until it turned into butter. It was a really cool experience. Something I enjoyed and always remembered. I have made butter at home several times that way.
Вот это настоящий учитель! А не тот который просто ведёт вас по школьной программе. Вам повезло. У меня тоже такие учителя были, это лучше готовит вас к разнообразным проявлениям жизненного пути.
That's a real teacher! Not the one who just guides you through the school curriculum. You're lucky. I've had teachers like that, too; it better prepares you for the varied manifestations of life's journey.
That really is a great story !!!!
Always put a bit of salt in the cream when mixing it as it will preserve it a lot longer. The trouble is now that cream is as expensive as butter so not worth it but I still love to make it myself as I have for the past 40 years.
Exactly what I was going to say! They are the same cost and I was worried how long it would last without salt. How long do you use one it for when you make it?
Cream and butter here is damn expensive. I used margarine instead as substitute
Yes I would anyway because I like the taste of salted butter.
@@Meonium margarine is so bad for you. It's literally one ingredient away from being plastic. Butter is so worth it.

My Grandmother was from Oklahoma and she always made her own butter! I remember she would put the cream in a mason jar with the lid, of course, then we would all take turns passing the jar around the table while each one of us would shake the jar until we had butter!
These are some of my favorite memories with my brother and our Cousins spending time at our Grandparents! We were truly Blessed!❤️❤️
I would like to try to make it. Is it a whipped cream?
I'm from FL and the SAME scene was done by me and my cousins as kids for our Grandfather! We'd shake the jar till we were tired but would shriek with glee when the butter burst into sight!! ❤️❤️👏👏

We did the jar butter in kindergarten. Amazing I remember that.( milk or heavy whipping cream) lol. late 1960s. I've done it with my granddaughter and even flavored it with a little salt or a tiny bit of garlic... People should do this with their children. Get some bonding family time 👍❤️

Growing up on a small farm, our butter cow was a Holstein/Jersey cross and a gallon of her milk yeilded a quart of cream. My Mom made homemade butter to sell to our neighbors. Mom went to work in my high school years, so I helped make the butter every other day.
We had a gallon sized churn, and when Mom came home for lunch, she set the churn in the sink with the cream in it. When I got home at 2:30, the cream had warmed to just the right temperature. I would plug the churn in and run upstairs to change my clothes. By the time I got back, the butter was already forming.
When we made whipped cream, Mom put her bowl and beaters in the freezer for a 15-20 minutes before starting the whipped cream.
I have taught my daughters and grandchildren, cold for whipped cream and room temperature for butter.

In the UK.. pound for pound, making butter yourself is a lot more expensive than buying it. Double cream is deliberately priced so as to not conflict with butter prices.
Double cream?
It's the same here in the USA.
@@ellavek1998 yeah .. I think it may be called heavy cream in other places.
We have single cream. Double cream. Extra thick double cream (which is almost solid).. whipping cream. And pouring cream.
But it's our double cream we use for making butter as it's the highest cream content than any of the others I listed.

Good video! Most people skip washing their butter, but washing out the milk solids makes the butter taste sweeter and last longer. Unwashed butter molds faster and goes rancid more quickly. We change the water about 5-6 times, to make a very clean and sweet tasting butter. My daughter and I used to demonstrate butter churning in 1700's period clothing at a historical village.
Are you in Pennsylvania? What type of milk is best?

rancid ? I cant recall store butter, ever going rancid. So...what about salt? I fast forwarded it.
@@MizzAugust7 they also rinse theirs when it is made. Yes, it will mold and eventually go bad. Always keep the butter dish >½ full and we don't refrigerate (never lasts >1wk and doesn't go rancid or mold as long as it's kept very clean &dry.) We love ours soft and spreadable.

Every now and then I make this as a treat, as cream is just as expensive as butter, but yes, it is very easy to make, and the best part of making things yourself when you have the time, is you know exactly what's in it.
I think Monsanto, DuPont, and the animal steroid industry would disagree. Your statement would only be true if the cream comes from a cow you raised, fed, and milked yourself.

Loved the video. I make my butter just by whipping Heavy Cream (Any Brand Will Do) until it holds together. My butter never has that huge amount of liquid in it. I like my butter softly whipped and once the butter has been whipped enough to my satisfaction, I just put it into a small container and DONE ... So easy and deliciously spreadable. I add a very little bit of salt at the very end of mixing. This butter is great with warm rolls. My friends love it and so do I ! It is also a whole lot cheaper to make it yourself, but I make it just for fun !!! Lasts at least 2 weeks in the fridge.

It's kinda sad that so many people don't know this. I learned this when I was a kid. My Mom told me stories of making butter w/ a churn when she was a kid. There was a dairy near by that made their own. We did this in school... Now, nobody knows stuff like this...😔
You , CAN , just put the cream in a jar and SHAKE it till it turns to butter or you PASS OUT , which ever comes first !
The thing is no one really needs to know this and if you are interested the information is available. I remember being really small in the 80s and watching a kids show and they made butter. I have always known how since that show and when I was in my early 20s we needed butter one night really late and only had cream so I made some using a plastic bottle. Instead of churning I filled it with cream and then shook it until the cream turned to butter. I then poured of the whey and cut the bottle open to extract the butter. I had never learned how to do this but these things aren't hard or special and anyone can do them.
Looking down or calling it sad that people don't know basic things they can easily look up online is kind of obnoxious. Why memorize things you can just look up? I feel worse that people don't understand how interest rates work or that nuclear power is cleaner and safer than solar or wind. People are bad at knowing what things are important.
I know how to do it, I've done it for fun before, but where I live, we have an Aldi, its cheaper to buy a pound of butter, than buying enough cream to make a pound of butter, and I find Aldi's butter perfectly good.
@@Cyril29a Ok well and fine but what would you do of we had an EMP attack and no power grid. How are you going to look that up?. People in yrs past knew how to survive-today people rely on everything but themselves-that"s what's sad
I honestly thought that you couldn't raise butter with US pasteurized dairy, so never bothered.
Did this all the time in Europe, though.
We use a bit of grey salt (from Brittany - best)
Right now, all dairy is so expensive, it wouldn't matter anyway. Buy the butter, buy the cream, either way, not today.
