    Thanks. This is very helpful. I didn't know any of this about the batteries.
    My hatred for GoPro has hampered my motovlog efforts for to long now. The idea of giving the GoPro some love and gaining understanding will probably help in my relationship overall. Maybe I'm missing some of the subtle ques from GoPro about what she really wants.
    I just tried out the new GoPro "Enduro" battery. I didn't do any exact check on it, but I got a 50 minute video recorded on one of them. I wonder if they're less susceptible to swelling? I will have to read their directions.

    I never plug my GoPro 10 into my PC, I transfer files from the memory card directly, works faster than doing it through the camera. I charge mine with the official charger plugged into a USB on my PC, hopefully the batteries for my 10 will be better than the 8.

      Yep, GoPro REALLY dropped the ball on the blue tops. I think it's a space issue - they're in there TIGHT, and adding another chip to them would hamper recording time, so they skipped that. I wonder if Insta360 or DJI action camera batteries have the protection built in?
      Also, after over a year of using nothing but Enduro [white top] batteries, I can say that this is a non-issue ... at least so far - so I recommend them to people.

  • @Phonamana
    @Phonamana Před rokem +2

    Thanks for the video. I am glad that I am not the only one that had that same GoPro battery swelling problem. I bought three Go Pro batteries for my GoPro 8 and all three swelled up and worse than yours. Those batteries were expensive at $20 a piece. I bought the dual charger package for $50 or so and it came with one battery so one that was one of the three batteries that swelled up on me. GoPro makes a terrible battery. I replaced my GoPro batteries with Generic Enegon Batteries that were three for $20 on Amazon which I've been using for the last two years. It came with a triple charger. I tested the duration of how long each battery lasted between the GoPro and Enegon batteries with recording in 1090p recording in the same room and they both lasted about 1hr7mins. Of course I had to put a fan on my Camera because it overheats and feels like an oven and shuts off after about 35 mins if there is no air circulation on it. I film and ride my bike and my GoPro never gets hot even in weather that feels like 100 degrees because the wind is keeping it cool. I've bought nine Enegon batteries and I've only had three that got too weak to hold a charge. None of the nine Enegon Batteries buldged out or even looked like they were going to start buldging out.
    I just looked today and I didn't see the Enegon batteries on Amazon anymore but, I did see another name brand that looked similar to the Blue Enegon Batteries that I got and that brand came wtih a triple charger too. I think they just paint or stamp the name on a battery like Die Hard does for Car Batteries and somebody else makes the batteries. The blue batteries that i saw on Amazon today were probably the same batteries as Enegon sold.
    I will never buy another GoPro battery unless I upgrade my Camera and I see that they have improved the quality of them.

I have only one that still holds but it already started to grow in size as well. I have contacted GoPro for assistance and they have told me that they can replace only one because of UPS and because of the lithium ion content inside the battery. My Enegon Batteries slightly started to swell after the very hot summer we had in Florida but, the swelling was no where near how bad my older GoPro batteries got. One of the straps broke on my Enegon batteries when I tried to pull them out of my camera. The other batteries were feeling a little tight in my GoPro 8 so, I threw a little Aquaphor on the sides of the batteries and they slid right in and worked fine. It's a shame they stopped selling the Enegon batteries on Amazon. They were cheap at about $22 for three of them and they came with a triple battery charger and they worked just as good or better than the GoPro batteries.

  • @TheOriginalCoda
    @TheOriginalCoda Před 2 lety +1

    The problem with unplugging your camera, is when you need it the battery will not be anywhere near fully charged. My Max seems to be drawing power all the time even when off.
    I've had several swollen batteries over the years, cellphones, games consoles, laptops, cheap chinese gopro knockoffs.
    IMO the biggest reason for swollen batteries is overcharging, this is not the battery but the charging circuit inside the camera. If it overcharges the battery while its in use, its crap.
    The second biggest reason is HEAT. The battery in my dashcam that I left in the car was a disaster. Luckily it did not explode in a ball of fire, but it almost killed the camera. I had to disassemble the camera to get the battery out. The camera is more 'round' than it is 'square' now but still works 😂
    Overcharging and excessive heat with Gopros... it's related... my Max 360 was used on my bike during the summer track riding, it got so hot, it froze several times, and killed most of my footage on my SDCard. If I had known about this aforetime, which is frankly a quality issue, I'd have bought Insta's 360 instead, but too late now to send it back. Plus the fact that now I've spent multiple days with various tools trying to get the GPS data out of my 360 files so I can try some greenscreen gauges magic in Resolve 🤦‍♂
    Anyone want a cheap GoPro Max? 😜

    • @RoadReality
      @RoadReality  Před 2 lety

      Dang, that's hot! I rode around for 4 hours on a 100+F day and none of my non-360 cameras quit on me... which was surprising. Heat is not good for them, but you're right about over-charging. Funny enough, my 8, 9, and Max all seem to hold a charge, but my 10 does not - the power draw you're talking about. The recommendation is to remove them from the camera when not charging, I guess I wasn't clear about that - sorry!
      The GPS overlay sounds awesome, if toy can get it to work - I know I saw a recent MotoJitsu video where he had a route and speed overlay, so it's possible!
      Thanks for watching and sharing your experiences!

      Right? I mean, DJI batteries have all sorts of circuitry in them to make them last longer, gopro only needs a portion of that to prevent this.
