- Unboxed my new gopro hero 7 today and found the supplied battery was dead - and the new gopro didn't recognize it. I decided to give it a little jump-start to bring it out of the "sleep of death", caused by the battery protection circuit. This process is also known as boost charging.
Thank you for this video. It may be 3 years old, but it's still very relevant.
I just bought a brand new GoPro 8 in 2024, which means the battery could be up to 4 1/2 years old.
The battery wouldn't charge, and didn't even register in the camera.
Then I found your video. (And watched every minute of it. 😂)
The dead battery is now very much alive.
I then rejuvenated an old camera battery the same way.
Thank you for this excellent video. It's a real money saver.
Yeah I have about a dozen batteries and every now and then I forget about one, and this happens.
Mahalo Mate, I needed to make sure I was plugging into the correct battery terminals and you showed that properly. Appreciate your help 🤙🏼
No worries, glad I was of some help.
Thanks so much, this solved my issue. I had 2 old third party batteries and I hadn’t used them for 18 months. I used a 5v usb cable and connected the red to the positive and black to negative for a few seconds then tried again and it worked!
Glad to have helped.
This is handy and good to know. I love my old GoPro and I use it regularly. I have several batteries for it, and a couple have experienced the so called "sleep of death" I will try this to see if I can wake them up.
I have also purchased newer action cameras as I refuse to purchase anything from GoPro anymore because they changed batteries between their models and some of the much older batteries cannot be had anymore. Thus GoPro's marketing, is trying to force me to upgrade the camera again. If I could run my older batteries, I would gladly buy their newest cameras.
Well my hero 5 was purchased second hand for only around $100 aud, and I was suitably impressed. I did a lot of work before getting the hero 7 (new old stock at discount) to make sure that the batteries were compatible - I elected not to go the 9, as the batteries are soft locked to the models, even though they are physically the same - aftermarkets show a warning message now too.
in any case, make sure you use a current limited supply before trying this, otherwise you might get some catastrophic results...
This worked for me!!! I used the usb cable method..I now have a functioning go pro again!
Ahh glad to have helped
thank you, solved my problem
Glad this was helpful
Can we do this with 2 AAA batteries for 3 to 4 volts
2 spanking new AAA batteries will give you 3v at the most, it might just barely pull it out of protection mode, but again, don't to so for more than a few seconds. make sure to put the gopro battery on the charger right away afterwards.
