When it comes to compilations, I’m a stickler for authenticity, so you need to do research as to who or what companies have the master tapes or the rights to the original tunes you’re familiar with. Be cautious of budget or “too good to be true” prices on some packages, as they’re a giveaway you’ll get re-recordings. The original recordings will usually be owned by the big companies, and won’t be at budget prices. The exception will sometimes be UK or foreign offerings, which can play under a different set of import rules. Do the homework if you want the original familiar sounding hits.
I have made the mistake only a couple of times. Buying greatest hits and saying These are re-recordings from a later date in the corner. Fortunately I buy all these CDs very cheap. 😊
