I like the Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8 much more !!! Compact and light with excellent image quality, for those who have to buy a new Lens the Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8 cost from 645 Euro ($688 USD) in Europe. I can very highly recommend the Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8 !!! Or if you like me love to focus manual, then get the excellent Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 50mm 2.0 which are light, compact and built like a tank, the optical image quality of the Voigtländer are just as good as the Sony GM Lenses to a much cheaper price !
Thank you Jason I really needed to see this.
As an owner of the 50mm 1.2 GM I can say it definitely does have a girth to it and can exhaust you on extended shoots. Because of this I regularly work with the 35mm 1.4 GM. I can see a good buy case for the 50 1.4 GM under these conditions.
Great job on the video Jason! Thanks for making it.
Love your energy. Whatever the topic is, the great vibe is always there :)
I sold my 1.2 not too long ago it was too heavy for me. Just picked up the 1.4 and I love the size! I always stopped down to 2.0 or higher anyway. I’m happy they decided to come out with a smaller 50mm
I rented the f1.2 one time and it was just a little bit too heavy for an anything more than a couple of hours of shooting. This looks like a good in between! Also, we cannot wait for the next episode of TGW! Such a great series!
Definitely a lens we didn't need, but quite welcome for sure. It makes for a nice trio with the 24 and 35 GM lenses that's for certain! Nice overview!
I dunno. $700 lower price makes it look better to me than the f/1.2. I don't see myself ever spending $2000 on a prime lens. Maybe a for a good tele zoom, but not for a prime. $1300 undercuts the Zeiss on price and beats it on performance. And it makes focus breathing comp more affordable for video shooters.
Sigma was poised to eat Sony's lunch on value, when the choice was between the f/1.2 and the f/1.4 DG DN. Gerald Undone, who's a hardcore video guy, dubbed the Sigma, "the Value Champ", before the f/1.4 GM came out. He's now giving the f/1.4 GM props for it's lower (than the f/1.2) price point, and suggesting it as an option, for video shooters.
What the f/1.4 GM will do, is kill the Zeiss f/1.4. Updated everything, and focus breathing comp, for $100 less? Why would anybody buy the Zeiss, now?
This lens fills a definite need for Sony. It's a (more) reasonably priced option, for those who want GM quality, but just can't justify the outrageous price of the f/1.2.
Awesome!! Super informative as always!!
This was the best review thank you!
It’s on the way, what a great lens for the price. Was going to buy the 1.2 mm but glad I waited. There are cheaper 50mm lenses but I have always bought native glass, even when I shot other brands.Native glass has always an edge .
Showing some love to the great OG Zeiss 1.8 👍
I agree the 1.8 is a long overdue upgrade
Super video, thank you Jason. Icecy :)
Just got around to watching this when I realized I didn't have a lens that was both full-frame and exactly 50mm. I had already ordered the Sony f1.4, which you recommend here...but then I watched the Northrups' review of all existing 50mm (or 50mm-adjacent) lenses, and promptly canceled that order in favor of the Sony 50mm f2.5. You can't beat it on the size/sharpness plane.
I totally agree with You saying the 50mm 1.8 from Sony needs an Update. But i think i would like to have some good OSS with that too. Yeah Active Stabilization rules the world, but i like to make my videos as smooth as humanly possible and missing out on oss makes me sad 😢
I’m surprised many are complaining about the size and weight of the 50 1.2. I personally find it much lighter and easier to shoot than the tamron 35-150 which is my main lens. I’m not a strong guy in any means but I can shoot with these ‘heavy’ lenses without issue.
Given said this, I do appreciate the new lightweight 1.4 version.
Tamron 35-150 and the 50mm f1.2 are two very different lenses haha ofc the 50 1.2 would feel lighter in comparison!
I am just in the need for a nifty 50 in my lens collection. Debating between 1.2 or 1.4 GM. I think I will save my money and just go for the 1.4 GM. I ain't going to do a large print or being professional enough to use the 1.2 GM. Thanks for the recommendation Jason!
Kick ass lens
Thanks for sharing. Is the autofocus low in noise or very silent at least?
😀
You have the best content! Are you still shooting mostly in Standard? Everything looks great!
Yep Standard!
Jason! I got an a6300 (I know right, why isn't he on full frame yet?), and I can't be spending $2000 on a GM. I agree with you, my threshold too is that the higher one is more than fine. I've got a Sigma 1.4 16mm that I bought previously for videos but find myself doing more photography these days of people/family (and usually on travels) and the sigma just doesn't cut it for me anymore. Need an upgrade and I think a higher focal length. Any recommendations ?
Nice video. The f/1.2 has a one stop advantage (which makes sense) until around f/2...where they both look the same. Seems about right cost wise....you want that extra wiggle room and sharpness at the wide apertures(lens mission)...you'll have to drop a bit more coin and get the f/1.2. If you are fine with great results at f/1.4...but not stellar...until f/2 ... get the f/1.4.
Amazing lens...very portable. Nikon and Canon are back to making them as big as they can...so it's nice to see these lenses so small...and yet...perhaps still the best out there.
Not bad for a toy company...
This f/1.4 is more than sharp wide open (in the center where a 50 mm matters most, no one gives a shit about corners). In reality even the corners will barely be perceptible in sharpness. The big difference here is the 200 grams of carrying weight.
@@anonymousl5150 Love it when someone speaks for an entire industry...online...anonymously.
Crafted professionals DO care about corner IQ. The advantages of both are accurately portrayed in my comment.
Others at a different lvl form you...will understand.
The weight to carry of the 1.2 was a burden for a long days wedding, even for an hour long model shoot. 55 was my first love and this new 50 1.4 would love to try before buy.
Zeiss 55mm always has a place in my heart too!
Hi Jason, I wonder if you could do top 3 or top X affordable (+ good quality) lenses (under 500/600$), incl. travel lens, portrait lens, all rounder lens, night/astro lens.. anything else that would be needed to have "the whole package for almost every szenario" in your opinion. Would be much appreciated 🙂👍🏼
on your comparison, does it look like that the new 50mm f1.4 has a better micro contrast?
As a travel shooter, how does this compare to 50mm f2.5G? Seems to have many of the same features as this new f1.4? Yes I know it's slower at f2.5 but outside of that...
Hello from Alaska
I found that Zeiss 55 1.8 on A7S III struggles to grab and maintain focus vs even the plastic fantastic 50mm 1.8
Nice comparison, Jason! Many thanks
Hello Jason, I’ve been following your videos for last few years. A big fan. My sony a7siii is not powering on. The red light in the corner keeps on blinking. Please suggest how to fix the issue, if you know. I’m really stressed. Need your urgent help here pls.
Love U From Cambodia, Jason u really inspire me a lot ❤
the most important argument is the size! 1.4 is smaller than the bigger and lighter 1.2!!! The 1.4 is a BEAST🔥🔥
I'm still waiting for the 85 f1.2
I’m surprised we haven’t seen that yet.
Wow❤
As I'm still paying mortgage for my 50 1.2GM, my main problem is paying 50% more price for extra half stop aperture worth it?
I love the GM lenses as much as they are unobtainable to me
Try to never say something like that to start 🙌
Hey Jason, have you had your hands on the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG DN, yet? A comparison between it and the new Sony 50mm f/1.4 GM would be really cool.
Not yet. Unfortunately being a digital nomad makes it hard for me to acquire loaners. I can still get them to test but likely not all at the time same time if that makes sense
@@JasonVong Yes, it does. I figured that getting lenses to test is difficult, when you're on the road.
In Australia it is only 100 AUD difference between the 1.2 and 1.4 (at George's online).
Sir, could you do a review on Sony E 55-210mm F4.5-6.3 OSS, please?
I have the 55mm F1.8mm and its great, BUT.... I really wish it had a closer minimum focus distance. I was testing today with my primes. My 55 F1.8, 85mm F1.8, Sony Ziess 35mm F2.8 and 28mm F2 all seem to make an object look about the same size at minimum focus distance. The 35mm F1.8 (my favorite) allows you be a lot closer, and the only other that got closer was the 90mm Macro (understandably). I have to say that for the most part I go for 1.8 primes these days. The size and weight is just better, and its only photographers that nit pick between 1.8, 1.4 and 1.2. Maybe if I was a serious portrait photographer I would think different... but hey ho...
thats true. You reminded me why I switched to the Batis 40mm a few years ago and ultimately sold my 55mm. Big mistake. Both are useful in their own rights!
I have the Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8, it is a great Lens, I like the compact size and the weigt, but I do wish for an upgrade of Lens optical image quality and I miss an aperture ring and a AF/MF switch. The close focus are not that bad compared to the majority of Lenses. You are right "nobody" NEEDs 1.2 Lenses !!!
Didn’t even know this was coming out! The 1.2 is way out of my budget and saw the new Sigma 1.4 and was about to pull the trigger but now with this…debating if the 400 is worth just sticking to GM (have the 35GM and 135GM, 85 1.8)..decisions, decisions
It's been rumoured for awhile same as 85 1.2
400usd over sigma is nothing...simga is heavier, taller = annoying front heavy,,, AF slower, even at the center @ f1.4 sony blows it away...and sigma has extremely bad CA and purple fringing. sony easily wins at all areas and yet just 400usd more expensive. Sony is a no brainer lens dude don't think twice.
@@fluxcapacitor3273 thanks, yeah been seeing more reviews and seems like the GM may be the one I get.
If this is similar enough in size and weight to avoid a gimbal rebalance from the 24/35 1.4 it’d worth it to switch from the 1.2. Did you happen to try that?
The 35mm should match well enough. Same length, and only 8 grams difference in weight. The 24mm might need a rebalance. It's lighter and shorter.
@@careylymanjones Thank you sir!
If the 1.4 had come out before the 1.2, I’d have bought it and then never bought the 1.2. But, since I already have the 1.2, I don’t see myself purchasing the 1.4.
50mm is my fav focal length. I use an apsc sony now (a6500) but I'm tempted to get a FF. 🤤
I’m not sure if this info is accurate. I own the 55 Zeiss. So I’ve heard that it is Sony 1st native lens for Alpha cameras. With that being said, am I still good with this lens?
Oh man, now I’m getting more confuse, which should I get? sony 50mm f1/2, sony 50mm f1/4 or sony 85mm f1/8? as my second lense.
I'd vote the 85mm personally! But if you wanna feel safe. 50mm F/1.4
The 55mm 1.8 is legendary! I'd never buy another 50 for Sony mirrorless.
I agree !
great if you are doing photography, but I had issues for video - lightweight enough, but had focusing issues (pulsing) with any moving subjects.
@@GuitarRJP I never do videos
my 55mm 1.8 shows tons of chromatic aberration against the light, planning to sell it for that reason, almost useless in contrasty situations
I work out a bit so 50 12 isn't a problem hehe
G Muscles 💪
Soon asI buy the 1.2 GM I bet Sony will announce a v2
Thanks for making this! Excited to check this out.
Hard agree on updating the 1.8. I'd love to have a 1.8 G in a similar size/price as the 20mm 1.8 G. It's hard for me to justify the price of the Zeiss 55 with how old it is.
Dont look at the age, it is still a great lens
Great for travel and interviews
Sigma 50mm f1.4 DG DN is in deep shit now.😂😂😂
50 1.4 GM feels great.
Can u compare this to the sigma 50mm 1.4
My clients pay me enough for budget lenses like the Viltrox which still provides wonderful images. I ain't got GM money.
$2000 you say? Not for this guy. Amazon was a week late with my travel camera bag and I raised hell. Not only did i get them to give me a sony 50mm 1.4 gmaster but I also got them to throw in a set of folding large v flats. Don’t take shit from Amazon when they mess up on your order. They have billions and if you know how to break balls and negotiate you can get them to give you something 5x the value of what you ordered. As long as you’re a prime member and spend a decent amount of money with them they will do whatever they need to keep you as a customer.
The only reason I bought this 50mm F1.4 GM is because there is very little coma and astigmatism. I need it for panoramic astrophotography.
That sounds awesome!!! I have been wanting to try Astro photography and never had thought about pano or stitching with a 50mm! Going to have to try it out
+1 for a 50mm 1.8 as good as the 35 1.8 😉
seriously! throw in a 24mm F/1.8 while they're at it!
@@JasonVong have the 35 85 and im getting the 20, haven't use the 50 that much but a better one would fit nice in my bag :) 24 isn't as needed because of the awesome 20mm 1.8 :)
C'mon Sony stop with this and just give us that new 85 1.2 GM!! already!! lol
Oh no Jason. Oh no. I wanted a minimalist kit, but this new 50mm GM is making think, I’ll probably sell my 24-70 GMii and get this 50 and the 24 1.4 GM. For the stuff I plan to do in the future, like selling prints and I think prime lenses are just better. The bokeh matters more than I thought it would.
I agree that the 50mm 1.8 could use an update, especially if they can keep that lens under $300
I don't think it would get that low, especially is you look at the 35mm f1.8, but $400-450 would be awesome.
Good point..they should have just made this a 1.8 G lens..lol
@@GuitarRJP It is currently lower than that. It's only $249
@@MEBoisv Correct but that version is very old. We are talking about a new lens, new autofocus motors that are linear, etc. Love for you to be right but I doubt it would be only $300.
@@GuitarRJP Ok, you can stop talking to me please thanks
Wonder why no one makes f2 lenses.
Under f2 lenses are always too heavy and f2.8 isn’t fast enough.
Sigma did it and nobody buy it
If you like manual focusing, then you can get the compact Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 50mm 2.0 which are just as good in optical quality as the Sony 50mm 1.2 GM and cost much less !
Err Jason I'll be more like, please Sony update the 85mm 1.4 Gmaster please 🥺 85mm seriously needs the mark 2 update and goodness.
Amen!
Omg
This is just an FYI, OK? There is also an other 50mm e-mount lense, that you should consider and that is the Samyang 50mm 1.4 FE II. It's smaller than the new Sony GM 1.4 and lighter. it's aldo much less expensive. By the way, it's razor sharp. Here's the specs: weight: 419g. 80mmwide and 90mm long. The filter is 71mm. The cost is $589.00 list price...Not too shabby! Lastly, don't forget about the Sony 55mm 1.8. It's only 280grams, 70mm long and 64mm wide. Even if it's a little "long in the tooth" it's a razor sharp optic. You can pick up a used one for $550.00.
My first g master Len
This 50GM? Nice man enjoy it!
@@JasonVong yes sir since I got my Sony I been shooting with the Sony 50 1.8 it good but like you said noisy time to upgrade for some odd reason I will only shoot 50mm
I’m pretty sure if this came out before the 1.2 you would say get the 1.2.
Even when the F/1.2 came out, I'd still recommended the Zeiss 55mm F/1.8 though 🤷
Not every top lens will fit all photographers. Size, weight and portability are the important points to take care of.
@@JasonVong own the zeiss 55 1.8 and sony fe 85 1.8, and thats it..a long story short.. besides those 2 lenses, i now only got vintage lenses. that duo do it all.. btw, please try out some vintage lenses, im curios to hear your opinion on that
I sold my zeiss 55mm f1.8 to and the zeiss 16-35 f4 to fund the gm 50mm f1.2. If i can choose again with current options i would def choose the 50mm f1.4 over the 1.2. The 1.2 is just so massive. But by far thats the sharpest lens ive purchased.
Even portrait photographers cant justify the price of the 1.2
Sony should make 50mm 1.8 with new motors for $699
😅
Is this bettter than 50 1.2 gm?
No, it’s just lighter. The 1.2 is the greatest lens since sliced bread.
@@Bathingwookie It's overrated. 778 grams because they added a million glass elements to compensate for extra sharpness is just bad compromise. The aperture difference between 1.2 and 1.4 is so minimal you are better off getting the more practical 1.4. Hell even the 1.8 is good enough.
How about a new 85mm 1.4?
im surprised we haven't seen that or the 1.2 GM yet!
@@JasonVong can you tell me your top 5 lenses for portrait in general would help me to choose better
Already own the 1.2 and got the 2470GMii recently, visited Japan last week, damn the 1.2 never came out from my suit case, love the the 2470GMii is so versatile, and the 1.2 actually quite heavy for me, if the 1.4 image quality remain the same compare with 1.2, will definitely switch to the 1.4.
We do want the 50 1.4
Sir I m a new photographer will you like to give away the lens so I can use in m Sony A6000
Wow people complaining the 50/1.2 is too big and heavy? Really?
Better start lifting some weights maybe
I ain’t got the G Muscles 😅
I own the 50mm 1.2, was on a vacation for a week. Lens came out on first day only, was considered too heavy to walk around all day long having it on my A1. Think the f1.2 is a great studio or location lens just as my beloved 135mm f1.8 GM is, but just a notch too big too heavy for all day holiday street photography, imho. Would stick to my 55mm f/1.8 if it wasn't for those terrible chromatic aberrations. So, maybe the 50mm f1.4 could be a good compromise for travel photography
Give me brother 😭
Someone pointed out that..should have this been labeled a G instead of GM..dont get me wrong its cool..but at the same time two GM of the same focal length..isn't this a first for Sony?..I mean there was the 20mm 1.8G which is an awesome lens and then the 24mm 1.4 GM..which is great as well..this is a weird choice that Sony made this lens?..seems like there was no point of it?..they are basically making the lens battle each other for sales?..and making the people have a choice of which one to get..when they could have just stayed with the 1.2..hence make people buy the 1.2 all day long instead you give them an option lol but overall seems like an awesome lens still...even though clients and some other photographers won't be able to tell the difference between a 1.2 or a 1.4?..just a photographer preference now at this point on which to purchase..

Sony 50mm f1.4GM VS Sigma 56mm 1.4 DCDN VS SIGMA 50mm f1.2
Hey man you are using an iphone here, so you are not a fan of sony phones 😀
Because they're crap. I had one, biggest mistake I made. I paid £850 for it, got rid of it less than 2 years later for £185. First and foremost it's a smartphone and mine failed at that (too many issues to list here). Went for a Google Pixel 7 Pro and no regrets.
This is Sony shooting themselves in the foot. Cannibalizing their own product line lol ... slow bleed.
??? No !
Sony shot itself in the foot with the $2000 f/1.2. The price/value ratio on the f/1.2 was silly. Without the f/1.4 GM, Sigma was poised to eat Sony's lunch in the fast 50mm category. The only buyers for the f/1.2 GM would have been video shooters who do lots of focus pulls.
@@careylymanjones I do not think so, many have bought the 1.2 and there still will be (not me), Sony have very carefully calculated how and when to produce and sell a product, there are a reason why Sony today are #2 in Camera sales !
@@careylymanjones I think many will buy this 50mm 1.4 GM once Sony finally stops selling the old 50mm 1.4 and the very old 55m f1.8, there's definitely a market. And the price of the 1.2 was not silly when compared to Canon's and Nikon's even more expensive and bulky competition. I use the 50mm f/1.2 on my A1 for work and the image quality is still stunning - and No, I don't shoot any video at all.
@@cameraprepper7938 I don't do much video, and my camera bodies don't support focus breathing comp or high burst rates, so I went ahead and got the new Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG DN Art. It's been fantastic. AF is scary fast, and the lens is really sharp. And it was $450 less than the Sony will be.
Your mic voice killing my ears 😢
People who buy for price and portability reasons won't get the GM.
People who buy GM usually want the best optics and won't mind the price and weight.
I don't really see the F1.4 as a popular choice.
I was waiting for the Travel Gone Vong Series, so disappointed 😅
😂😂 March!!
1.2 is horrible, returned it. and i hate 50mm. i am going to use either 12-24 gm or 70-200 gm.
I have the 12-24 2.8 and the only thing is you have to use rear NDs 😖
One of the most nonsense and meaningless lens Sony has ever made!!! They already have f1.2 version. So, they should release the f1.8 mark II which has faster and reliable focus instead.
