50mm is arguably the MOST popular lens in all of photography. Generally recommended as a second lens after the kit lens, this is many people's first prime lens, their first foray into "pro" photography world because it offers a very unique look. Combined with the F/1.8 aperture, it leads amateurs to a very unhealthy obsession for background blur or BOKEH ;) However, many people default this as a portrait lens and I don't blame them, it's easy to score amazing portraits with this lens but the 50mm is capable of so much more. It's versatility is often hidden but once discovered, it can be a powerful landscape, travel, street, & casual lens! Here's a video on how to maximize it's potential!

For those who are practicing panoramics, make sure that you change your white balance off of auto! Your camera may change the white balance on every photo you take, resulting in an unnatural looking pano. Also, make sure to maintain the same focus unless you are trying to focus stack, the pano may not merge well!

1 week ago my sis gave birth, I didn't use my 50mm for like a year, but for newborn photography it's pretty amazing. It allows you do stay pretty close to the subject and it doesn't show a lot of background. Now I shoot her baby almost every day with 50mm. Combined with 105mm macro.

Thank you so much for including the equivalent lens on an APS-C camera. I'm one of those who bought a 50 mm 1.8 when I started, thinking that was THE lens that everybody was talking about. Then I added the canon 24 mm pancake lens to my collection, but I felt that something was missing in my collection. Recently I purchased a Sigma 30 mm 1.4 Art so I can get the 50 mm look.

Since the end of WWII to the introduction of interchangeable lenses. The 50mm was a standard non-removeable lens on all Canon cameras for nearly 46 years. For all those who say they'd never use a 50mm for anything doesn't know the rich history of this focal length during those nearly 50 years.
Many incredible photos were taken with the 50mm.

I think 35 to 50mm is a nice all around focal length for a lot. My 35 is probably the lens I use the most for travel (I only shoot primes). My portrait lens is the Sony 85mm f1.8, and there's some bokeh for you! I'll even put the 85 on for street stuff, if I know I won't want to get too close to subjects.

The funny thing for me is I got my SEL50F14Z as my first 'proper' lens as when using the 28-70mm kit lens I found myself hovering in the 50mm range quite frequently and it works perfectly for me when using it as a pseudo-webcam. I think right now I'd want to work my way towards a 70-200mm lens for a bit more versatility though I have also considered grabbing a 90mm macro lens to open up new doors as well. Sadly my wallet is screaming at me any time I start browsing lenses as the price of these things add up crazy fast.
Edit: Oh and I totally agree with the bokeh obsession. Got some crazy good pics on my first day of using the lens and that f1.4 gave such sexy blur that I had that thing on A-mode with 1.4 on for days after that. It took a fair few missed shots for me to realise I do actually have to touch that knob every now and then. LOL

Once you use a prime and get the sharpness and bokeh it's hard to downgrade the quality to a zoom imho.

Ah yes, the unforseen problems when getting your first f/1.2.... I tried to take photos with creamy background using the 30mm f/1.2 I just bought. Only problem was that it was bright sunshine and white snow. So that didn't end well. -.- (I did buy a filter to fix this later... but initially I was kind of stumped. I tried cranking up the shutter speed but it ran out looong before I got the exposure down. And going up to f/2 or more just made the background too much in focus.)
