Saiyan blood means that he can keep on getting stronger with every battle,literally no upper threshold. And his human blood means he doesn't have the same bloodlust as the Saiyans do. Remember, at the time Raditz came to Earth, an enraged Gohan was about as strong as adult Goku and Piccolo. During the Cell Games,he was stronger than Goku. His mystic powers give him an almost spiritual boost that maximizes his powers. And these are without learning half as many techniques as Goku did. I've read that Goten was supposed to replace Goku as protagonist with adventures of him and Trunks as kids,hence why their character design is so similar. And Goku was supposed to stay dead. But fan popularity meant that Goku had to be brought back as the protagonist, no matter what Toriyama wanted.

What most don't realize is that Gohan's more limited role in the buu saga (and Goku's replacement as the main hero) was because fans in Japan reacted harshly to Gohan's usurping Goku as the main character of the series. Gohan was always intended to be the most powerful character, but they got away from that because no one liked his sayiaman antics. And rightfully so.

At the end of the day it’s all about what the people want because the people pay for the story
The ending is good though, Goku gets the last fight but it's everyone and especially earthlings that beat buu through the genkidama. Shows the positive influence goku had on earth too, despite bad guys willing to destroy it because of him😂 It's better than just Gohan saving the earth one more time.
I don't disagree with those fans, it's true that in the cannon Manga, Gohan is the strongest. The anime by Toei doesn't try to go against this too much, but they still throw in filler here and there of Goku, trying to keep him as the ultimate hero. Toei does this in the non plot wholed/non cannon movie making Goku the only one capable of defeating the villain and making him the strongest again. Like you said Toei, made Goku the chosen one in GT, no one could stop him, which seems too much.

Mystic Gohan is stronger than Super Saiyan 2. The issue is that if he powers to Super Saiyan, he sacrifices the Mystic strength for some reason like loss of inner calm or something. I'm not sure of the exact reason.
Mystic was above ssj3 actually. If you remember Goku fought big buu as ssj3 and while he did great he didnt manage to really hurt buu, this version of buu is much stronger and gohan picks him apart and his blows actually "hurt" him, not just get absorbed like most attacks do.
I agree, while I love DBZ this saga was very long winded and this was one part that really pissed me off. I loved to see the transformation of timid Gohan into confident powerful Gohan.

He was still in his Mystic form during Wrath of the Dragon, that's why Goku, Vegeta, Goten and Trunks all become Super Saiyans while Gohan does not. Toriyama believed Gohan should be the strongest in the series, while Toei and many of the fans alike believe that spot was saved for Goku. So whether you believe that the saga ended with the Buu saga like the manga, or with the Toei movie of Wrath of Dragon, which had no plot holes compared to the other movies is really up to you.

Gohan after the powerup theoretically was able to go SS, but practically he could not. First of all, the new power would be too much for his body to withstand, and he'd probably die. yea true but he's a fusion so he doesnt count, Gohan (alone) is the strongest character of all DBZ.
@Mandragara It's because he doesn't keep up his training because he has a family now so he got weaker.
