I can’t believe how old this is now. I’m so happy I was here for this amazing ride from the start all the way to the end where these group of modern turned into an actual company to make a very successful remake of half-life using the source engine. Thank you!
Will you be remastering this with the 2016 models? Perhaps showing off parts of STU? I think this would be a wise idea considering how far BM has come from 2012.
Although some of the sound effects and voice acting were... Iffy, and made the game feel less like Half-Life, this was the best mod I have ever played. In fact it doesn't feel like a mod. It feels like its own game. With a few modifications such as replacing sounds with HD versions of the original Half-Life sounds, this is an amazing game.
It used to be a mod though back in the days and was originally released in 2012 i believe. Then at some point in time they got an offer from Valve to release it as a standalone title and to gain access to the full capabilities of the Source engine or something like that, i'm not sure. But originally it started as a free mod for Half Life 2
Now it is its own game =D Also Mat Matt, fuck off, she/he said it FOUR YEARS ago, it was a mod back then for free and only needed Source SDK which is free too and I played it.
One thing that blew me away when I got this mod was the tentacle scene: Apart from some textures on the tape drives, that scene was verbatim in its delivery, right down to the light being crushed.

Is it me, or does Half-life's story seem like a ripoff of Doom? Half-Life: worker at a laboratory facility in an extremely remote location must singlehandedly fight off an invasion of otherworldly monsters through its infested corridors. After falling through the portal the creatures used, he battles his way through their home dimension and seemingly succeeds, only to find out that more creatures have taken over planet Earth. Doom: worker at a laboratory facility in an extremely remote location must singlehandedly fight off an invasion of otherworldly monsters through its infested corridors. After falling through the portal the creatures used, he battles his way through their home dimension and seemingly succeeds, only to find out that more creatures have taken over planet Earth. coincidence?
+TheGrayMysterious If you oversimplify it like that, yes. Technically every story is a ripoff if you make it that simple. The entire Half Life Franchise is, essentially like what you wrote but it's a bit of a stretch. Gordon Freeman has help (not much since the player must feel like the lone hero and not some loser who needs hand holding) from scientists, security guards, and in the second game, tons of rebels. You're simply the spearhead of the assault, which is common in pretty much every shooter ever. And the final boss in Half Life 1 isn't even evil at all. The Combine controlled him, and they don't show up until HL2. If we're just taking the first game then Gordon doesn't know that the Combine attacked. Doom, though, is different than what you wrote. You're a marine in Doom, and you're sent there because of a distress call. You don't even work there. Basically, Doom's story is more like Half Life: Opposing Force. You're sent there to destroy the opposition, all of your friends are dead, and you're just trying to get back to Earth. Once you do, the demons are everywhere but you send the surviving humans into space on a spaceship. Yes, you are "single-handedly fighting an invasion" but that's because you're literally the only human alive. Literally. As in, in Doom 1 and Doom 2 you're the only human. At all. In Doom 2 you do send the survivors to space but for all intents and purposes you're the last guy ever on Earth. And coincidence? Probably not. It was the 90's; first person shooters didn't care about story back then (I"m sure there's some but not any that people truly know of). The people who made Doom didn't even /want/ a story since they found it unnecessary. There's a reason why "Doom Clones" were so popular; it was easy to rip off the game because they gave you the engine and making a new story wasn't too necessary with a fast paced shoot-em-up. Even the creators of Thief: The Dark Project were afraid that a "first person sneaker" would not do well because, at the time, Unreal, Doom, and Quake were kings. (Heck, Unreal basically stole Doom's story too, if you really stretch it). Basically, what you stated is a slightly more specific version of the "Hero's Journey" in stories. The hero is almost always "different" compared to others. Generally the hero feels wanderlust, restlessness, or something that makes them feel distant from others around them. A remote location is just a physical version of this. Fighting off monsters or enemies in corridors is literally 99% recycled today. Every action/shooter/horror game does the same thing (although horror might include running away). Entering the enemy's stronghold/dimension/secret base/evil suburb is just "crossing the threshold" a.k.a. the "point of no return". Any movie/game/story has that point of no return, but in this case it's a physical portal. Returning to find evil everywhere is also common. Lord of the Rings did this. Frodo, in a remote, gated suburban community that the locals call "the Shire" (which is pretty remote, considering the distance between a lot of the locations) now has to singlehandedly carry some stupid ring to a volcano. He battles evil orcs through the infested lands of evil Mordor and gets there in one piece, only to find out that orcs are literally swarming out of the Black Gate to kill anything that breathes. He then drops it in, hides from CGI explosions, and then... goes on a nice cruise to the Elven version of the afterlife, but with less shuffleboard and more elves. All this time he was followed by some old guy, a loner with a sword, a chubby sidekick who isn't too useful, two short people who talk to trees, a short guy with a beard, a tall guy WITHOUT a beard, and some average guy who dies. Frodo basically did all the work. If you call LOTR a Doom clone... I'd laugh, actually. Heck, OBLIVION used this sort of story. A person in a remote location (okay, so a prison isn't remote but it is out of the way) is now single-handedly fighting otherworldly monsters through infested corridors, enters their dimension to kick their butts, and returns to see that Cyrodill is being attacked by more demons and he has to help Akatosh defeat Merhunes Dagon. Doom clone? I think not. Mass Effect? A lone dude flying through what is literally the LARGEST remote location ever singlehandedly (okay, you have friends but whatever) fights off enemies, goes into their sectors of space (or in ME2, the Omega Sector) to kill them, then comes back to see the feces hitting the fan. He then proceeds to kill them too. Another Doom clone? Titan Quest? A lone hero in the middle of ancient Greek times (most of the city states were pretty remote) singlehandedly kills a bunch of evil people through the hills and valleys of the land, enters the portal into the dimension of evil, kills the big bad foozle, and leaves just to see more enemies running about. In fact, this happens THREE TIMES, not counting the expansion pack! Doom Clone? Thief: The Dark Project (now updated to Thief Gold)? A lone hero singlehandedly steals all the loot in a bunch of random locations through guard-infested corridors. He eventually enters the house of the evil guy, steals some of his stuff too, and leaves to see the city in shambles. So he enters the evil dimension of evilness, steals MORE stuff, and wins. Doom clone? The Stanley Parable? A lone worker at some boring, remote(ly fun) corporate facility must singlehandedly fight off the actual idea of free will and fate, going through an invasion of narration through the twisting, joke-infested corridors. He is eventually teleported into alternate versions of his reality, battling his way through more humor, and seemingly succeeds, only to realize that he is taken back to his office to find out that resisting fate is futile (or is it?). Doom clone? I hope not. It just occurred to me that writing the "plot" of The Stanley Parable as if it was a Doom clone was pretty fun. But I digress. In short, you're right and wrong. Doom ripped off older stories, and those stories the older ones. Every story has the hero that essentially can kick butt on their own, going through the evil places to the main evil place, defeats the evil thing, only to see more evil, and in one last act of heroism he banishes that evil once and for all.... until the sequel, of course. You just took two seemingly similar games and didn't look at the big picture: We're all a bunch of unimaginative copycats who love making fan fictions of other people's work. Also, holy crap. I wrote this wall of text. I really /do/ have too much time on my hands for silly CZcams comments. Sorry for making you read.
Now if you're comparing doom 3 to half life then No, half life did not rip off doom 3 because half life was first. But if you're comparing the original doom to half life then you might be right. I dunno

Funny how the reason the gameplay shown is so good, is because it was originally done at a fraction of normal speed. One of the great things about the source engine is all the versatility it has, just using the console cleverly you can do absolutely amazing things.
For an 11 year old trailer, it's still pretty goddamn accurate to what we have now.
Accurate? This trailer is the understatement of uhhh... the decade.

excellent work guys, you've done something really great here
Defiantly getting this if it ever comes out
Looks freaking SWEET!!
This looks AWESOME... I always hoped somebody would do something like this. It looks INCREDIBLE!!!
Funny how the reason the gameplay shown is so good, is because it was originally done at a fraction of normal speed. One of the great things about the source engine is all the versatility it has, just using the console cleverly you can do absolutely amazing things.
THIS IS SO AWESOME!!!!
That beat though. This is so nostalgic too, i played BMS 2012 right after it came out.
That was just awesome...
Omg I remember watching this trailer back in 2008, very happy how the game turned out never thought it would ever be finished xD.
