  • Scar tissue after surgery can slow down or even stop you from making progress in your healing.
    It can be painful, lead to swelling, it might grab nerves in the area.
    Breaking up scar tissue requires mechanical forces to make sure you get the parts of the knee that have scar tissue moving more freely.
    In this video, Dr. David shows you how to break up painful scar tissue to help heal after a knee replacement.

I’m choosing to do the exercises that you’ve described on a more regular basis and praying that I get better soon!!! I’m tired of still being in excruciating pain when I stand to walk!!!! Seeing that simple drawing of the layers somehow resonated with me today. (4 mo sp TKA) I guess I'm a visual person,. I would enjoy listening, too, but the slight 'echo' from the simple sound system that's utilized does make it a bit less likely to follow with my 71y.o. ears.

    Thanks for the well communicated information! I recently had a surgery about 2 months ago to "re-lengthen" my femur (femur broke about a year ago), and while I recovered okay the first time meaning, I regained a lot of my mobility back in the leg... this time around, I seem to be stuck at 110 degrees, it's been hard to push past it. I've been at the same degree for nearly 1 month now. I am going to PT, but aside from incorporating massages to the scar itself, what else do you recommend? I also pull my leg in at a point where it is painful yet tolerable and hold it for 30 seconds and release. What more can I do? I will have to have the new pin that was placed in my leg removed in the future, and go through the ROM thing and PT all over again. If this persists, should I just seek out a scar tissue removal procedure for when I have this removal surgery? That would be the 3rd time they go through my knee. I'm 30 years old by the way, and had been fit/athletic/a runner for the majority of my life.

    This was great information. I am 10 weeks out from a TKR and am having a terrible time with range of motion. I only get to 110, and I still can not get it completely straight. I have had a manipulation, which just made everything worse. More swelling, and I feel a little more unstable. Basically back to almost week 3. I'll try massaging the scar. I go to the doctors PT office, and I really don't think it's as good as a private PT office. They seem to go by what the computer program says and don't deviate for a person who needs different help!❤

    Thank you for the more in depth explanation of what happens. I get keloids, and they're no fun. I thought there was something I could massage into the scars, but apparently not. I recently broke my leg/hip, and they put a rod down into the leg. Not sure about the upper connections, but I have several gashes that have become keloids. Very painful along with Fibromyalgia, and knee problems. I massage it anyway, and am learning to walk again on it. You have helped with every aspect of recovery. I am an old girl, so it's not easy, but I want to walk again, unaided. Thank you for explaining the scar problem. As well as the knee issue.

      3 months after this comment, how’s the scar tissue now?

    • @theearthauger
      @theearthauger Před 2 měsíci

      @SkyHermit I'm sorry it took me a bit to reach out to you. I'm doing much better. It gets better everyday. It sure was a ruff surgery. Doctor said it could take up to a year for all the nerves to go back to normal. Sometimes it feels numb. That's on and off. I also think weather makes it hurt with being so damp, etc. I was bone on bone. If I didn't do it, I'd be way worse. That was my last chance. Do the surgery or suffer with extreme pain the rest of my life. I'm currently suffering from a broken rib. I hope this helps you. Hang in there it truly gets better. The nerves have to get calmed down after the shock of being cut into. I had my left hip done as well. That was a nightmare. The surgeons use different suppliers. And you can end up with 1stem longer than the other stem. There are 5 parts to your new hip. The stem, ball, socket I forgot the other 2 parts. But you can Google it. And if any one part is defective it can lead to a recall or you have to have the whole hip replacement done over. Had a lady tell me she had 3 redues within 6 months. That was beyond belief. She said they came out of the socket. Wow, I feel blessed. Hope you are doing well. 🇺🇸 👍⭐️

      @@theearthauger Thanks for your reply. It has been 2 years since my hip replacement due to ski accident.
      I would say I am good now and without pain but I could feel the tightness around the scar there and there was a huge lump and surgeon didn't seem concern about it and asked me to massage that area daily

    • @theearthauger
      @theearthauger Před 2 měsíci

      @SkyHermit I'm glad to hear you are doing well. I had that lump as well. Felt like a huge lump. I was told to massage the entire area where the incision is and all around it. And to rub in lotion as well. On occasion I will get stabbing pain in and around incision site. It's been approximately 6 months ago for me. Still tender. But, no pain in my hip area. I'm grateful for that. All in all, I'm doing better everyday. That must have been some ski accident. So glad to hear you are doing well and happy you are still hear to share your story. I love to watch people ski on TV. It's awesome. I always wanted to ski. I bought a pair of ski's and I never got the chance to try them out. I donated them. My hope is that someone had a chance to use them. I had my ski poles and all. Well at least someone else had a chance to enjoy them. Thank you for taking the time to respond back. • @epmanualphysicaltherapy
      @epmanualphysicaltherapy  Před 6 měsíci +3

      Hey Lesley! Thank you for sharing that you had a hip replacement in May with us, we hope that your recovery has been going well. To answer your question, it just really depends and it is subjective for each individual. In order to break down scar tissue you will have to prioritize getting the inflammation and irritation under control so finding the right balance of resting and mobilizing the joint is key. As you can see, breaking down scar tissue is a lengthy process that can take quite some time. so it's important to exercise patience and look for small progress over time.
