    • @ninalehman9054

That’s an incorrect argument. We have a defense budget of $886B. The aid set aside for Ukraine is not quite 7% of that budget.
The non-defense budget is $773B. The Ukraine aid package is only 8% of that budget.
Of the combined total between the two budgets ($1.7T), the Ukraine aid only comes to 3%.
That’s 3 cents out of every dollar. Do you seriously think that amount will make or break any domestic programs?
But for our Ukrainian allies, that pittance means the difference between life and death.
Did you know that the equipment and ammunition we send them is all stuff which will expire soon? If they don’t use it, it will be thrown away anyway.
Add to that, the fact that we will hire American companies to replace all that material. This means that aiding Ukraine is actually helping our economy and giving Americans jobs.
Not a single American will fight there. They don’t need our people. They only need the weapons and ammunition to protect themselves.
This isn’t simply a gift, either. We have a military lend-lease law by which we can help our allies fight and they pay us back later.
The return on this investment is priceless: we are stopping a new land war in Europe before we DO need to send our troops there. It is far cheaper to stop Russian aggression in Ukraine than it is to stop it in Poland or Germany.

    • @erichbrough6097

Clarification: what goes to Ukraine is exactly what Col. Vindeman said, which is _surplus_ weapons, ammunition and defense systems, like Patriot missile batteries, from our vast stockpiles. We do this *so that* we do not end up in a World War Three scenario.
Surplus arms don't do anything for us just sitting somewhere gathering dust, right?
