  • This is a mini picture blog of my trip to Franfurt Germany in June 2016. When i was a young teen my brother Kevin and I moved with my dad who was in the Army stationed in Giesson. Although the ipad was stolen during this trip with most of the pictures i chose this creative way to share my journey with you. Thanks for watching! Enjoy!

We miss the GIs and their families in Giessen! It was a great time for us German teenage kids in town. There were many contacts with children from US Army personnel. In the days when there was no internet and no online stores, we had a little piece of the USA right in our neighborhood. The latest music, movies, and clothes. Huge V8 trucks and pickups, good barbecue in our parks, and so much more.
In Giessen, we learned that apart from all big politics, the US soldiers and their families were ordinary people like us who had similar dreams and sorrows. In addition, they showed no fear, and they helped us to stand against the USSR.
Giessen was a little piece of the US. And we young people in Giessen are happy and thankful for the time. When the second Gulf War started I made my way from work in Frankfurt to home which was north, and I saw hundreds of Humvees, APCs, and Bradley a.s.o. Moving out of their barracks in Friedberg, Giessen Butzbach, etc. towards the airport. It was a convoy that took 2 days and blocked almost the entire 30 km autobahn section. It was huge. All that material was lifted and sent or should I say "disposed" to Iraq. At the end of the day , this material ended up in the hands of the wrong people, as we all know. But that is another story. If you want to see a place that is similar to Giessen in the 1990s, you can now go to Wiesbaden, where there is the last huge US garrison in our area in Hessen.
For those who have served in Giessen and around: You are being missed! Giessen is not as "cool" anymore.
Thank you for the service, for your country, and for us, the civilians, as well. It is being appreciated.

and I loved how we could play around the housing area and be far far away from home
without a care in the world it was really safe I wish my kid could live like this things are definitely different now
I remember grabbing empty beer bottles from the patio and taking them up to the imbiss stand and trading them for a lunch bag size bag of assorted gummy candy to share with all of our friends we all did it when we were running low on allowance money lol
they trusted you to trade the bottles in for a fresh new beer. to bring back to your father or the candy. it was your choice...
    did you ever do that?
I remember sneaking away to the woods by myself

Omg ... you just bought a tear to my eyes ... as I to grew up in Giessen...my sister was married to a GI stations there ... so my mum took me to live there so we were all together ... I use to go to miller sports hall and the cook outs in the american housing areas... the barracks was called Depot, Pendalton and the infamous Rivers of course :) lol I so fondly remember it all:) I was there in the very early 80’s ... I did go back in the mid nineties but it was soo different and almost sad to see all the barracks closed and everyone gone.. But Thankyou for these lovely memory’s ... from a reminiscing London Uk 52 year old :)
