I traveled down the great Mississippi on a paddle boat when I was five, I'm now 60, and it's a fond memory.
I live for these CBS Sunday Morning segments. They're absolute gems of journalistic television.
thewaywardpoet aren’t they? That’s all too rare these days!🙂
I was just thinking that! Which is why I just subscribed.
I will always associate the show with a sense of guilt though...I would only see it on tv when my family had skipped church
It's the ONLY journalism on TV now - note Jane is old school and I so miss Charles! I'll tell you another one Tim, He'd be roasting the politicians of today
Its one day of the week where they shy away from fake news and pushing their anti American narrative.
Me too!! Love it when they have outdoor shows!
I've lived near the MS River my entire life. It's NOTHING to mess with and this man is very lucky to have made it down twice.
In a canoe
Born and raised on that River in New Orleans! We never lived more than 2-3 blocks away from it during my entire childhood! and I was a certified River Rat! Now I live in another State...but have to, periodically, return to that river and sit on the levee..taking in the sights, the sounds and even the smells!..It's like a rejuvenation of my lifeblood and being! Love that River!
What does a river rat mean?
@@Kauffman578 I spent my entire childhood living on or near the Mississippi River!...hence...the term "River Rat"....
I live in S. La and never imagined the mighty Mississippi could be as beautiful as it is at its beginning!
Watching this from my home in Memphis Tennessee! River City!
Lovejazz01 I visited Memphis in Jan (it was awesome!) and walked across the Miss into AK; maybe I should have made a wish. 😉
MINNEAPOLIS 👌
901 BABYYY
My grandfather helped build that rock covered dam with the CCC back in 1935. My family and I visited the park just a couple of weeks after this segment aired. I have always loved Itasca State Park.
The Mississippi is so cute and friendly at the beginning. Big and bold at the ending in Louisiana. Maybe one day I will get a chance to travel to see the beginning of the Mississippi.
Maybe I'll get to see the end of the Mississippi one day
its worth it!
@@martinonnen1348 ive had the honor of seeing both! quite the difference!
Walked the headwaters as a child, went to university near it, loved it then. Love it still. Truly a mighty force.
Born in Greenville, Mississippi. Love watching stories about he Mighty Mississippi. Thank u really enjoyed.
Me too. Ain’t nobody like a Delta body.
Same
I was born in Greenville, South Carolina
A wonderful piece. Thank you to Mo Rocca and everybody else who was involved in producing it!
Nice, I spent a lot of time on the River around Alton and St. Charles. That's where I learned to swim and ski. Brings back good memories even though I lost two friends on it. Also worked the 93 flood as an electrical lineman. Great video,, THANX . Glad I stumbled accross this.
Michael Sever my father also worked on the dam in Quincy Illinois for the flood of 93.’ Love how this videos comment section can bring everyone together!
Very interesting. Always enjoy Mo’s Americana pieces
Im almost a little sad they didn’t mention that the 1927 flood inspired Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy to write “When the Levee Breaks.” Thanks to them, and the cover by Led Zeppelin, the song has become one of the most enduring representations of that flood. I’ll live with it, but it would have been nice to see that connection get some light.
Kaskaskia (live just 20 minutes from) is an awesome place (where an Illinois town ended up on Missouri side) with a LOT of historical significance.. The oldest Church west of the Mississippi, the 2nd Liberty Bell, Lewis and Clark origins, and a the sad story of what could have been Americas largest city got swallowed in the watery grave, complete with an indian curse that could very well explain all the flooding. (Oh yes lots of indian history)
Here in Louisiana we have a sayin... go and visit the Mississippi before the Mississippi visit you
MarchBloxBoy theone lmao
Lmao
Lmao
Aint that the truth
I live I. Jackson mississippi
The Mississippi River is beautiful and more people should know and see it at least once in their life. I was born and raised in Batesville, Mississippi.
I agree, it deserves respect also. I've never been east of the Mississippi but one of my most favorite places to be
Being from St. Louis I’m happy I live on the west side of the Mississippi River.
usmcusausaf No it’s because I know that I am more direct to Los Angeles that’s all.
@usmcusausaf The East side is Illinois! 🙄
@usmcusausaf East St Louis is one of the worst cities in the U.S.
@@27pattywhack2 no, the whole metro east of St Louis is a shitshow- I know I live in St Louis's metro east!!
@usmcusausaf Vicksburg is best
that final statement brought a tear to my eye.
At 17, graduated high school, paddled my canoe from headwaters to st. Louis. The greatest memory of my life.
I love & respect the Mississippi River !!! I live 35 miles from it and fish & boat pools 9 & 10!
I think I can be on the river 24/7 Love it !!!!!
Wow, the river starts small than eventually gets bigger during it's journey. Kind of like chasing your dreams in life. Incredible ✨🙏
It’s 4 am and I got the most random urge to study the Mississippi river
would highly recommend Rinker Buck's book "Life on the Mississippi." Great mix of memoir, comedy, and history.
As days of rain will fall, the rivers will rise! Good memories of growing up off the Mighty Mississippi River! Cruises on the Admiral, up & down the River were festive! Also Baptisms, were done there! I wish that I could have canoed, with Mr. Eddie Harris, up that River! Thanks Moe, for the awesome segment! 👍⭐👍
Stl
CBS Sunday morning at its best, no politics, no covid fear mongering
i paddled the entire river this year! adventure of a lifetime!
I paddled 580 miles of the 980 mile ohio river last summer. How long did it take you and how many miles?
@@hanssoloskywatcher0426 Hi Hans! i was on the river for a total of 62 days and paddled nearly 2,300 miles
The Miss river is absolutely breathtaking.
Having lived most of my life within 20 minutes of it, I concur it’s pretty impressive!
Mississippi Solo by Eddy Harris is one of my all time favorite books.
Yep, agreed. Right alongside it is "Old Glory" by Jonathan Raban. Eddy went down the river in a canoe while Jonathan did it in a small, outboard powered open boat. To complete my triple play on great, human interest stories based on the Mississippi River, comes "Up On The River" by John Madson. To read all three books will make anyone want to get out on that river....
Beautiful and wonderfully intimidating at the same time. Have thoughts many times of traveling the great Mississsippi
OMG....my uncle when he was 40, rode a horse around the perimeter of his home county in West Virginia...then he rode it around the entire states outline too. at 75 he rode his Harley around the perimeter of the United States.....but this guy, paddlin down the mighty missisip in a canoe?....completely off da hook!!!...im tellin ya...they still grow em big in America.
Unmistakably beautiful
It was very nice and educational watching that.
I’m a inland pushboat captain, and I couldn’t imagine paddling down this thing. I’d say from Cairo to Baton Rouge, wouldn’t be bad due to lack of fleets. But from Baton Rouge to New Orleans you are in the danger zone with fleets lining almost every bank around every bend. From Baton Rouge down you get into ship traffic. Im more upset the highest I’ve been is Vicksburg, would love to pilot every mile of the river and the rest of the inland waters, but for now I’ll settle for that.
Itasca State Park (Mississippi headwaters) is a gem. Minnesota rocks!
Except omar.
I love it. That brings my curiosity wanting to visit the river and its neighboring cities and towns. Thanks.
Thank you.
This is an amazing look at the Mississippi.
Brilliant segment!
I love this man, every story he reports pill you in to the lives of the people.
Those headwaters are rad as hell!i love seeing the source of water.
So beautiful river.
I very much enjoy CBS more than any other major media news network.
Excellent documentary. Learned a lot about this beautiful mighty river
Loved Mark Twain and Tom and Huck.
From California and honestly never that the Mississippi was THAT big
Good piece, and yet somehow it left out a little snippet of Paul Robson singing "Old Man River." Because he indeed "just keeps rollin' along."
My first year living next to the river was 2008 when the whole town of Oakville iowa was flooded. I lived about 7 miles away
I am from Germany and i was last year there,i saw the Mississippi River. It is beautiful to see it.
Beautiful! I really wish I could go there one day.
I hope you can come too. The scenery is beautiful, and until you see it up close, you can't really appreciate it's size.
NeoKenni Me why can’t you?!
@@capoislamort100 cuz it's thousand miles away from my place
NeoKenni Me take an airplane
Cool!
Shout out to Blackhawk's old stomping grounds.
Very quality reporting.
I always think "Free the River!" Every time I pass it.
I used to work on the Mississippi Queen in the '90s. It's ashame they scrapped her. But hoping to relive my steamboating days on the Delta Queen. Would like to visit the upper river states
Twain's "Life On The Mississippi" is THE book to learn about the Mississippi, pre and post the civil war...Twain was a boat pilot for 20 years on the river...It's an amazing book filled with amazing history of the river...
- Amazing
AWE INSPIRING VIDEO - THANKS
Studied Mississippi in high school. Came to the US for college and get to live next to the mighty river. Mark Twain did wonder explaining the lives along the way
I have spent a lot of time on the Upper Mississippi (Wisconsin). There is nothing like it.
Nice back drop of Marquette, Iowa at 2:30
Paul Schneider’s book, “Old Man River,” is one of the best books about the river ever written. Highly recommended.
Watching from queens nyc
Wow !!
Awesome video !!
Grew on the Mississippi. Only thing I hated about it was how muddy it is.
Its annoying sure, but not as annoying as infertile land
The runoffs from the numerous farms surrounding it.
too thick to drink and too thin to plow.”
Grew up on the Trinity River in Dallas-
so when we moved to New Orleans I first understood what a RIVER it was. Mark Twain’s great autobiography “Life on the Mississippi” paints a memorable story of our country.
The musician Muddy Waters was nicknamed so because he liked to play around in a small muddy creek of the Mississippi delta as a kid.
Great video!
🗺️ Thank You!
The Missouri River is not only longer, when they meet in St Louis, it's more like the Missouri becomes the Mississippi.
I recall when that boat came down and docked right beside us. That's are work boat in the background around 4:50. Spoke to him briefly. 363 LMR Natchez/Vidalia. We're a 180+ days over flood stage and counting.
May the love of those around you help you through the days ahead.

Lovely! 👍👍👌👌🙌🙌
Would be a be a great trip

So Much Blood Shed in & on that River Bank... I can see the people running for safety. Never Forget History
Great to know
The last line in this piece couldn't have been said better.
Great Video!
I want to take this trip, has anyone ever done a road trip paralleling the Mississippi from MN down to the Gulf? Curious about it if you did, would love to plan something like that for next year.

Great remembering for me. Deckhand, 1980-81. Mississippi Queen, Leslie Vickers. LaBeouf bros. Houma LA :)
I’ve been. There I live in deer river mn
I thought you might enjoy this😊💗
Eddy Davis of St Louis said it best. Listen to his quote at the end if you missed it.
Mississippi Burning, who remembers the movie?
I do. U forgettable history.
Good video!
That's the Mississippi. The mighty Mississip. The old Miss. The old man. Deep river my home is over Jordan
Where's Jordan?
@@SeverSTL Just a dumb song from the movie Vacation
Hello, Quad Cities ✨
I live on a creek that goes into the Mississippi River in Minnesota
Now I want to take my daughter there. It's interesting that it takes about 90 days for water to traverse the length.
One Mississippi, two Mississippi,… , seven million seven-hundred-seventy-six thousands Mississippi!
I wish is to have my ashes scattered in the Mississippi.
I was watching CNN when Amy Klobuchar announced that she was running for President. She mentioned that as a kid she had gone to the head waters and had jumped the river. Sounded like fun thing to do.
Ive been fishing this river for 32 years. Ive travled it.
Where do you do your fishing and what do you fish for?
SHAWNEETOWN ILL

💕🇺🇸👍
How long would it take to canoe the entire river that’s very interesting
You can paddle it in just over a month if you dedicate your self to it. About 45 days if you take your time.
If you plan to fish along the way or do any site seeing it will add to the count.
90 days if you just go with the flow and sleep and eat in the canoe! (That’s a “don’t try it at home” thing though… well… “don’t try it in river”…) About 17 days is the record.
Upstreams…?! Besides the early explorers and trappers traveling parts of the river upstreams (and I would suppose some native Americans before that), there seems to be some adventurers who managed to paddle the whole length (and then continued on rivers even further north to the Arctic Ocean). But I can’t find any information about how long the Mississippi part took.
Where is the location of the head waters ??
Eddie Harris..super-kind alumnus of St. Louis Priory (Abbey) school🥳
The old miss, the old man. Deep river my home is over Jordan!
The irony of Eddie getting caught in an Eddie hince "there are days the Mississippi won't let you move" 🤣
Soon the Delta Queen will return to the rivers and you can ride down the Mississippi on a real historic steamboat again.
Well that's cool. I hope she comes back to Nashville
Oh wow I'll have to check that out. Thanks 👍
This is boring af but i love it!
