  • Next to the banks of the Mississippi River is the Delta region, a land that feels removed from America. A distinct culture with a turbulent history... home of blues music and some of the warmest people in the world. Join me as we get lost on a road trip and learn from the ground up from the locals what this part of America is like.

Being from a town like Alligator, MS, I'm glad I made it out. I read books to occupy the boredom of growing up in an improverished town. Graduated high school, graduated college, got a career, worked in corporate America for 10 years, moved to California, started and maintaining a smoothie business. I've always had to work twice as hard, but I made it, coming from a 37 year old black woman, I always believed I could despite my environment and basic resourcecs. Never give up!

I hope they get one. The hard part is according to the census data there was about 120 people living there. I think someone that could come in with a mom and pop style store would do better and have a little of everything like years ago. A dollar general would run them out of business if they set up a store. Corporate America has run a lot of these small towns down and it’s gonna take all the smaller families to bring them back with help of others

Nobody, will take any assignments to this state due to poor facilities and people are not willing to lose their license because of poor facilties. Its sad to see Americans suffer from conditions that maybe solved with resources and health care. Alot of people in this region and the south in general are so nice and appreciative. It is a total appreciative feeling than in California which offer none of that. I love the South especially the family feeling they give you. As a blues musician from France, I decided to leave my lil' country for the big continent where the blues is born, more precisely, Mississippi Delta. 10-y-ago, I stayed and travelled many states, especially the southeastern ones. I did my "chitlin' circuit" for the blues aficionados. Met so many nice ppl along my blue trip, specifically in the small towns or very small - like Alligator, MS. I know for sho Clarksdale!! I have the huge luck to jam with Big Jack Johnson & the Oilers at Red's juke joint. I met the legend Charlie Musselwhite and way more local blues guys like Daddy Rich, Razorblade, Super Chickan etc. I miss those open minded fellas here and there. As I know pretty much the black history and the blues culture and backgrounds, it was easier for me to be (very) welcomed. I've been widely appreciated for my will of discovery and my way to pay my tribute to some bluesmen/women who "educated" me their ways. What is doing Peter is absolutely great and very interesting! I think it's time for me to go back on this mighty land of Mississippi! Poor ppl have a great heart bc they know too much what is pain and going thru it. Y'all gotta realize the world legacy that is the Blues. And so many ways to play it in MS.!! THX Peter🤠Go visit folks! Take care!

That is so cool. I lived in the delta for a few years and it always struck me how Euopeans appreciated the delta. It was like a mystical magic place to them. Then everyone in the U.S. shits on this area and a lot of the people that live there think it sucks. Which is understandable. There are parts that are straight up 3rd world conditions. There is a special energy to the place though. I just hope the conditions there improve and people are able to live better lives one day.
I actually had some musicians from france and switzerland play at my house once. They played didn't play blues, its was weird ambient noise stuff, but they were really blown away at all the history. Like all their favorite blues musicians were born like 30-45 minutes away. Lol a lot of rambling but I've just always loved how much europeans appreciated the history and vibes

I was actually born and raised in Greenville. As far as why the local economy crashed, back in the 1970s Greenville had a lot of industry downtown on the lakefront. Industry for building barges, painting ships, and hauling grain down the river. The port of Greenville was a big stopping place for barges coming up and down the river. When the Grain Embargo was enacted against the USSR in 1980, it caused grain prices to plummet. This had a devastating impact on the economy and a lot of those factors and shutdown, taking the jobs with them. People moved away when the jobs left and the town still hasn't recovered.

A lot of people who move away as young adults come back "home" to retire. I’ve moved away, but still have family in the Greenville, Leland, Clarksdale, Cleveland, and Ruleville areas and go back about once a year.
