- trouble with equipment can really do a number on your production. this starter was not in any store I could buy it at. no-lace it was win a warehouse out in some unknown location so I had to wait till Tuesday to get it. however it worked perfectly when it was installed so its all good. now this combine has worked well! only a couple of hiccups but nothing unusual or devastating to deal with.

For those things that are in hard to reach places, I use guide studs (just a longer bolt with the head cut off. Then you can slide the (starter, etc) into place, start a bolt or two, and remove the guide studs. Works well if there's a gasket that needs to be held in place too.

Those Nippon Denso style starters last well .What usually happens to them is the solenoid contacts wear, changing in height. So when this happens the L shaped contacts dont contact the copper ring on the plunger and it just clicks and doesn't turn. Its an easy job replacing them. Just take care not to break the thin wire under one of then which is the solenoid coil wire. Carefully sand the plunger ring and reassemble. Only Some of the larger models have a ball bearing that goes into the plunger hole. Merry Christmas to you and your family Wes, from Me in New Zealand.
I saw you take that piece out of the starter and I said to myself, I bet that starter won't shut off now 😂😂. Had a starter fail like that on my diesel mower at a shop I mow. I was engulfed in a cloud of electric smoke and thought I was going to have to ask for a fire extinguisher. Luckily my electric fan drained the battery pretty quick.

I had a feeling that plastic washer served a purpose. It won't run without it.
You may want to check down by the battery's the serials parallel switch ( 24 volt to 12 volt switch) has 2 fuseable links if one of them is burned . You would be short of voltage and cause starter to heat up . ( Happen to me on a 9070 NH), easy fix and if stuck you can make a temp wire to replace fuse ( for one emergency start only)

When you were working on the starter and tested it , when you removed the actuation wire and the starter didn;t drop out , I figured right then it may hang up engaged where apon the ratio of the ring gear would over speed the starter .... almost to a point of what a hand grenade does!!!!

That hyd reservoir, the radiator fan placement, longer engine belt to move the alternator back further and/or ac comrpessor back further would make it easier to work on up there. A lot of stuff is wide open to work on, but there are several things that are a PIA

i would be getting a new battery cut off switch ........seen a combine go up in flames due to a bad starter and a bypassed cut off switch ............ when the insurance man came to look at what was left he saw that the battery cut off switch was bypassed .........it was an uphill battle to get any money for the combine after that .......

That's the Nippondenso style starter that's been around for quite some time. I used to replace the contacts in the older Chrysler vehicles that had those.

LMAO you are honest been watching for years, but that big scrap pile in front of the shop would have maybe bought a few starters.
Had that happen on an older tractor, fried the starter.
After that I installed a battery disconnect, not that it would have mattered, I could not hear the starter still running over the engine. First sign was smoke rolling out from the engine, by then it was cooked.
What gets me on the new starters is the solenoid cost more than the whole starter. Back in the day I remember when solenoids cost about $40 vs $200 for a new starter.
Everybody gets pissed, cusses a storm, chucks wrenches, loses their temper but very few admit it.
I admit it and I have to walk away for 10 minutes, calm down and go back at it.

Those starters have a reduction drive gear set in the front case. So it multiplies the torque from a smaller cased motor. But as your wallet found out. Not cheap. Everyone cusses. Its a liar that says they dont. We still follow and enjoy the experience. Rusty bolts an all.
A short story to make you laugh. I have a 2010 Massey loader tractor well it had starter issues and I finally figured it out after buying a new battery. Sometimes it would start and sometimes not. So I came to the conclusion it’s the starter. So after 10 minutes of crawling on the ground and standing on my head I finally found this little jewel. Well it was behind a load bracket and behind that was a fuel filter and then you could finally see it! Yippee skippee now I’m old and don’t bend and my fingers sometimes just don’t want to work and this was one of those days nothing wanted to work. So I go to the house to see what the manual had to say about replacing it. Well you guess it nothing. So I’m drinking a cup of coffee and my wife said why don’t you call for service, my response was so where have you hidden this pot of gold! So I made two attempts at try to get at this thing it’s just not happening. So I broke down and called for service technician so the next morning he’s here and so he begins so I’m watching him he drags out tools that I never knew existed swivels and joins and the ever famous metic sockets. Well two hours of contortions that no way on Gods green earth was I going to bend like that! He had it done. So like you sometimes it’s just pays to let someone else do it.
parallel is 12volt of hooked in series you'll make 24 volt. It took me awhile to get it straight. I love them high drive starters 1/3 lighter than standard starter

When you are working by the hour, if it is made hard to get in and out if it take 2 extra hours just money in your pocket. The only time it maters is when you are doing it under warranty pay which is always cheep.
Yep. I would use a o ring. Does better under compression. But would still need a washer. To isolate from rotation. They don’t like that much. But would probably last longer than a plastic thrust washer. If it was the old stile starter that wouldn’t be needed. The screw the gear is on would throw back off the flywheel once the engine starts. And you would be correct on your assumption of it kicking out. The new starters are a pain in the ass. But they last longer as the gears mesh and go. Instead of grinding kicking on and off. Good luck with the new combine though. Think it was more then dented as this point. She was rode hard and put away wet without a care it seams. But the guys in the mid west with millions of acres can afford to replace them every year on one harvest. Us little farms with Ryan homes eating every black rock acer they buy to put up homes that people can’t afford. We deal with the problems and make things work. Honestly you’re really lucky you got the machine. Marry Christmas and hopefully a bountiful harvest at the end of the harvest fight.

Military trucks are 24 volt and a lot of them have 4 twelve volt batteries, series parallel. More voltage better for starters.....

I have done that a few times working on stuff. Have to find the tool I just threw. Three hours trying to get one header bolt in, temper flare tools fly. The sad part next morning I had it done in ten minutes. Why it works that way I don't understand.

Hay lonely I think the forty three twenty Deere John was the best built Deere John of that era the Dairy farmer 👩🌾 I used to work for had a forty three twenty that thing you could not hurt that from running silo filler to plowing we pulled five sixteen inch bottoms to hauling poo all in the same day cause the forty thirty was in the shop half the time we bailed hay forty miles one way take ten wagons and a couple of pickups with us we would stack the wagons ten years high with three across the top we would put Deere in tow so we would pull them behind the pick ups the tractor and three wagons behind the pickup and haul back and forth we would start around Eleven go until five leave the wagons tow Deere back he bought that Deere in nine seventy two his son now has it as of I know never a engine rebuilt yes the transmission a couple of times he figured it has a couple of hundred or so miles when you mention how far you drove your great grand son Deere young John that hit a huge note 🎵 love your channel

when they built the combine, they built the combine around the starter and unfortunately, they didnt think about the amount of space needed to service the starter at some point and time. This is why farmers like to buy equipment that is made by the farmer. This line tends to be more in equipment or machinery pulled by a tractor then a combine or a self propelled unit. Still, with engineers getting paid very well to design and that have the chance to have prototypes before rolling them off of the production line, there is no excuse that one of these so called engineers couldn't fine tooth comb the prototype and physically get on their hands and knees to mimic a repair on every location on that combine and say "dah", that isn't enough space for a rachet to get on a bolt to get anything off or even enough space to get two arms on it to hoist it out! They should be put in jail for incompetency of their profession!
