- inov-8 MUDTALON SPEED first run & first impressions review. It looks like it’s going to be a big year for newly re-branded inov8. We are seeing a lot of changes from the trail running brand in 2024 and in today’s video we take their brand new MUDTALON SPEED out for its first run! They’ve been designed for soft ground running and they come with an aggressive 8mm lugged outsole to give you maximum traction when running in muddy conditions. I’m excited to test them out, so let’s get them laced up and hit the trails!
Thanks for watching, we'll see you in the next video and as always - stay safe and keep on running!

Awesome Loyd! I come 175th in the Arc 🙈 Inov8 saved me.. I packed some 270 V2’s as an emergency having never tried the brand.. at St Ives they come out their new box and sailed in through to Eco Park! 🤣
Well done on your ARC finish! 👏
I’m glad the 270 v2 came to your rescue, recover well 🙂
Cheers lad ❤@@Run4Adventure
Back in 2014-2016 all my trail shoes were inov-8 but then just drifted away. I do currently have the amazing Trailfly G270 but it’s this 2024 line up which could see a load more in my rotation. Very excited!
An absolute insta-buy for me. I love the Inov8 shoes and this one looks perfect for muddy and rainy Denmark. My X-talon 260 v2 is in laces and i need a new shoe for my orienteering runs and muddy days.
Looks like a brilliant shoe, I love the fit and flexibility of Inov8 shoes. Also really looking forward to your thoughts on the new Trailfly as well.
I've got high hopes for Inov8 now. As a bunioned wearer of Altra and Topo shoes, foot-shaped wide shoes are what I need. I love my X Talon ultras too, but they only just fit me in a half size up from normal. Just hoping that the see through uppers on these Mudtalons are sufficiently durable.
I'm in the same boat, I love my Topos but I don't like being tied to one brand and I used to enjoy my trailfly 270s for shorter trail runs, despite not really being wide enough across the toes.
Excited to give these a try!
@@r-pupz7032Cant wait for summer to try these shoes. Been wanting Inov8 to offer a wide toe design in their mud line up.
They’re probably not as grippy as a mudclaw but are a lot comfier and faster. Love the xtalon’s but think the mudtalon will be the most versatile of the three. They dry very well and are well put together.
Really been looking forward to this review, well done.
First run in the MudTalon today( not the Speed model). 9 km short test and the shoe is just brilliant. Grip is ridiculous good, wide fit is comfy and spacious, much like the X-talon260 V2 its replacing. I went for the MudTalon for a bit more midsole. Its not at all bouncy or soft, more firm that I normally prefer but very comfortable and somehow feels like a shoe you easily could run a winter ultra in. Upper at the toe end is a bit stiff and makes an annoying plastic sound but thats not unusual for an Inov8 shoe and it will probably be gone within a couple of more runs. Very very pleased with the shoe
I am glad you are OK. I watched some of the Arc live, and when the starter was shouting your name to come forward, I thought 'oh no. He does not know Loyd is not there.' and felt a bit sad. I did not realise that you were well enough to be there and filming. It's going to be an exciting year for Inov8. Thank you for the review.
Great review, look forward to see how you get on with them, it's about time someone made a wide fit mud shoe!!
I won't be switching back to Inov-8 for my regular trail shoes (after ditching them when they went narrower) as I found alternatives that work well, but this looks like it is worth getting for the wet muddy days! 👍
Got these last month after a year spent looking for something like my road running Endorphin Speeds but for muddy trails/grass and very pleased with these, good energy return and great grip
Good to See you Back on the track 💪🏻
Thanks very much 👍🙂
I am ordering this shoe today having just found out about it. Been looking for something to replace my Altra LP'S as a technical trail shoe for muddy slopes. Thanks for the review!
Good to see you feeling better mate 👍
Thanks Dan 🙏😁
Glad you are on the mend Loyd. The mudtalon speed looks really tempting.
It’s good to see a sensible priced shoe for a change.
Thanks very much 🙏
nice one Loyd ! Have a great day.
Thanks for watching 🙏😁
I am looking forward to seeing the Inov8 shoes this year mate.
Loyd - so exciting!
I agree with all your thoughts on this shoe. As a fellow slimmer footed runner, I really struggle to get a locked in ankle and midfoot without sacrificing toe box room. Brands have tended to just make the entire last wider for ultra-distance and comfort focussed trainers which means they roll around and rotate too much on me personally. This new 'natural' shoe shape they've come up with is an absolute gamechanger in this regard as I can now buy a precision fit without cramming toes into it too. Who'd have thought, making a trainer shaped like an actual foot would work, eh?
A good description, Loyd. Like to Run4adventure. Have a great day.
Have a good day Manuel 😁
Very interesting looking shoe. I loved my old x talon 212’s but never got on with the mudclaws.
Nice review. Good shout on the Hoka Jawz Evo - shame they stopped making those.
The Jawz was a great shoe, not that durable though unfortunately 🤔
@@Run4Adventuremine have lasted well. Although I’ve given them pretty light use.
These are perfect shoes for the Brecon Beacons where I do most my trail running was a big fan of the mudclaw 300's from inov8. Still using the new balance Summit Unknown V4 after your review love them ! Maybe these would make a good replacement when there done .
Good to see you on the weekend Loyd, really sorry you couldn't run the race. My race ended extremely early. I was trucking along to Lizard ok, about 10mins behind schedule but was fine. Then almost straight after I contracted a bad migraine, which I suffer from. I carry special sprays that my neurosurgeon prescribes, if I don't have them I have hours of throwing up.
Went to look in m bag in they sprays were not there. (nothing else works). I think with all the clothing changes at HQ and Coverack, first it was cold, then warm, I must have either flicked out my medical bag or took it out and not put it back. There was a lot of people around and it was easy to get distracted.
So, very inevitably, I was very sick, kept stopping, couldn't run and time out at CP1. The big sob story is that my legs felt fine 😭.
I was still very sick until 10.30 that night when I got back the hotel and was able to take a spray that I had in another bag. What a disaster!
Oh well, SDW100 in June to focus on now.👍
They look like the Ron Hills I used to run in, in the 80's. 😂. Loved them. I will get these when I can afford them.
I'm just over 50k into mine, now, and as a huge fan of the whole Terraultra > G 270 V2 line, these are up there in terms of comfort, which is a massive plus for me, but with one significant downer in that from the first run they are shredding the back of my ankles, which is a first for me in any running shoe. I'm grinning and bearing it in the hope that it eases. I don't really feel it once out running, but it's not the best having a wound on each ankle. Other than that, it's a fab shoe. So looking forward to the new Trailfly's, and what I assume is an X-Talon of some sort with that blue pair. Very exciting!
Been looking at the for an upcoming Spartan Ultra. Going to purchase a pair soon.
I think these would work well for that type of racing 👍
Great video loyd. Glad you are feeling better, inov8 taking on altra, what will be their lone peak equivalent?
Glad you enjoyed the video Robert, thanks for watching 🙏
Ordered 2 pairs for Hawaiian hills :)) inov8 RULE!!
Hope you enjoy them 👍🙂
Good to see you again. This seams to be a bad ass shoe. How does the width and height of the toe box feel? Thanx for the video my Running 🏃 Brother 👍 Godspeed my Snotty 👃friend.
Top review 👍🏼How was the cushioning compared to the X-Talon ultra both with boomerang insoles in
I’d say the MUDTALON SPEED feels slight more cushioned underfoot 👍
Hope this helps and thanks for watching 🙏
I have a pair of x talon individual shoes and I have found them to be genuinely fantastic on road sections. Really odd. I think that that the huge squidgy lugs actually provide a lot of cushioning and spring
Hope your feeling better Lloyd. I used mine once and they caked up badly with mud. Also no rock protection whatsoever on the side of feet with that super thin material absolutely no good for me on Lakeland fells I'd smash my feet to bits.Won't use again I'm sticking with the Scarpa Spin ST's 👍
For anyone coming from old Inov-8 models please note the new fits are narrower than the old ones. The old normal fit is equivalent to the new wide fit.
No idea why they've basically just made 2 new narrower fits
That’s really not the case! 🤔
The old narrow Inov8 fit is definitely not as wide as the new wide fit, thats a ridiculous thing to say!
Very much not the case. The new wider fit is probably the widest fit out there. Certainly wider than Topo and as wide if not wider than Altra. These are the only things I've ever found that fit me well.
How’s the toe bumper on these? I had to stop running in the x talons due to them destroying my nails when descending
Foot shaped shoe well I never , must say my G 270s tongue really does lack padding not hardly used them ..
I’ve just bought some mud claws in the sale while others test these out. The side panels look vulnerable to sharp rocks and Inov8 have have a problem with the X Tallon 210 falling apart after a few miles running through heather. Not convinced they will be up to a big day in the mountains.
Lee from Inov8 assured me that they had been tested out in some really tough conditions and the uppers held up really well, I guess time will tell 👍
Hope you’re feeling better mate! Please review the Trailfly and Trailfly Speed - you’d be the first on youtube!!
Thanks Sean 🙏
Watch this space, reviews coming soon on both shoes 😁
@@Run4Adventure yesss looking forward :)
I know this will perform well on wet mud but I am concerned how well it performs on wet rock as I have found that Graphene grip fails on wet rock. I also wonder if the shoe is good on technical terrain that will require some technical scrambling i.e. something you may encounter in Snowdonia or Glencoe?
How long is your longest foot in cm and which size did you get?
These look like they would be good where my Thunder cross have weaknesses. The Salomons have squished my toes and are very non breathable. Where these look airy and more room in the toes.
Did you go for your usual 9.5 or 10? Also do you wish you got wide or are you happy with the precision fit?
I covered all this in the review? 🤔
@Run4Adventure yes I watched it but I meant to say if, after having put some miles in it, if you are still happy that you opted for the precision fit and whether you would have opted for the wide fit?
@@bilaltahir9978 Oh ok 👍 The precision fit is definitely right for my foot shape and going up half a size is perfect for me 🙂
Freedom racing has a 50k end of Feb if you are well by then.
I would like to run the North Downs ridge but it’s a long way to travel from Cornwall. I’m going to try and find a racing closer to home but thanks for the recommendation 👍😁
Have you ever tried a VJ sports shoes?
Not yet but I’m going to test some of their shoes this year
@@Run4Adventure would be keen to get your thoughts on the grip and whether it really is the best grip in the world
Its not. Had some VJ ultras. Narrow and small for size. Lots of bare foam in the sole. Not great on my local trails. ( Mostly Dartmoor).
I got them and they was too big… I think they fit large
They size small for me? I went up to a uk 10 like I’ve done with every pair of Inov8 shoes I’ve had a they fit just right 👍
Did you have Covid? I’d recommend 3M FFP2 (same as N95) masks for indoor public places, public transport etc. And sitting outdoors at restaurants / cafes.
It wasn’t Covid, just a bad cold and tight chest 😞
Really think the new branding is a miss. Just don’t get it and thought the old design was iconic. Now it’s just a bit bleugh
Agree. I thought they might redesign the foot part of the logo to make it a bit cleaner. Instead they've lost the foot and have a new non-descript talon thing that doesn't seem very original. The shoe looks great so I guess the branding isn't so important if the shoe is well reviewed. In the other hand, they won't take many sales from On Running customers
Totally agree.
I kind of agree, I’m not a fan of the new branding either 🤔 I actually think the old branding was stronger.
@@Run4Adventure it was certainly more distinctive. The 8 as a foot element could have been reworked. To remove it completely is a bit odd. I wondered if anyone in the company saw the new branding and thought "this is a bit generic"
They look awful, they look like they’re made from plastic
