Man, it's so satisfying to hear your opinion on the Lithuanians as it was exactly the way I felt about the civ. They're just sort of ok-ish in the early game, but then have a huge crunch when they hit the Castle Age where they need to do more things than they're capable of. I think the only reason they stayed such a popular pick in KotD5 is that, in the earlier stages of the tournament, a lot of the games revolved around Archer play that allowed the faster Skirmishers to really shine and get those advantageous positions leading into the Castle Age. It was also disappointing to see a lot of players neglecting Relic control when playing against the Lithuanians that let them back into some games that they had no right to otherwise.
I also think Malay was massively over picked. I know you placed them decently in A tier still, but some people were drafting them as if they were an S tier civ which they definitely aren't and personally I think they're even lower than A tier. People talk about their "strong eco" from the vill lead you can get with the faster up times, but you can get exactly the same eco lead by playing the Bengalis who also don't have to pay for the two extra villagers they get in each age. The faster up times often also make the Malay extremely economically fragile in the early Feudal Age and there were so many games in KotD5 where they'd end up with idle TC time after having to spend food on something like a defensive Spearman that didn't leave enough food left for villager production. In basically every game where the Malay were pushed off their berries they basically just instantly lost. I could rattle on forever about it, but I don't want to make this comment even longer lol.
I thought I was the only one who thought that way bout the Lithuanians. Particularly since NAC4.

Been a malians main since the original release of African Kingdoms. Glad other people are playing my favorite civ, even if it's only because they're strong now. Even after their inevitable upcoming nerf, I'll never give up on the Malians.

Civs have evolved a lot over the years. I remember Hera used to be the Huns player in team games way back on classic AoC game balance.
I've been riding the "Inca military is ultra powerful" wave for a long time and nobody believed me until they got all these eco buffs to match.
They do have one severe weakness though- they are more gold dependent than any other civ in the game imo
Not more gold dependent than the other meso civs, they have fantastic skirms and halbs. Kamayuk is also b just 500g for elite upgrade and low gold unit that murders cav civs.
Besides gold dependent is really not that big of an issue in arabia. Very few games get to the full trash stage. Double gold comp (knight/eagle + arbs) is very popular and if you have the weak lategame you might as well try and finish the game early.
Aztec are more gold dependent. Inca have FU halbs and skirms. Thumb ring for skirms too
Turks are far more gold dependent.
@@abdalucchash5717 imo aztec skirms are way better for lategame. And aztec relic gold gives u more res + the pikes with more atk are honestly more important in trash war than halb.
I've been playing incas since the last buff and they are 100% gold dependent. Aztecs have extra gold from relics and Mayans have last longer gold. With Incas I tend to be aggressive and dominate gold spots using cheaper castles. Seriously I got +100 elo last month.

Hello Hera, Congratulations on your KOTD win and its always great to see a tierlist video. A question to you - is this tierlist for KOTD5 version of Arabia specifically or does it apply to ladder arabia, 9 villager starts as well?

Hi Hera! Congrats on winning KOTD and thanks for the excellent video!! Even with the recent nerfs on the x bow and arb upgrades, I notice that most of the arbalaster civs are in the S and A tiers while most paladin civs are in the C tier (franks and Byz are the only paladin civs in the top 2 tiers....and Byz don't even have full upgrades). I am a big Paladin fan but do you think paladins should be made more accessible for 1v1s? (Somehow, with an equal imperial age position archer civs and other non-paladin cavalier civs should be scared of the all in paladin attack)
Based on KOTD5 results I think Aztecs deserve S tier. Aztecs took off games from you and Viper in KOTD5 where other civs couldn't. Here is what I mean:
1. Of the two games Vinchester won against you, one of them was with Aztecs and the other with Malians.
2. The only game TheViper lost to MBL was with Aztecs.
3. In the finals, you and Viper together banned each Meso civ including Aztecs.
4. The one game you (Hera) lost to TheMax was to Aztecs, albeit with Koreans.
I think results happened because Aztecs are underrated compared to the other Mesos, who might be stronger but maybe only by a small margin.
Aztecs eco bonus is very strong and it affects all the gather rates. They get a heads up over other civ's. Definitely not broken, but quite strong.

Congrats one more time for KOTD victory :) Viper and Daut and Jordan are undoubtedly probably the top 3 of all time players in AOE but currently Hera is no 1 without doubt :) And I think that definitely a new ara begun with Hera domination in next years . But honestly ( hope you are not offended :P) I hope this era will be not totally one sided and we can see some more wins by Viper and by other players , I am sure you will win majority of the series, but still :) Thanks for the another awesome video and analysis.
"Spoiling" the tier list brought an interesting concept to mind. What if you opened with your completely filled out tier list instead of building up, and explained either all your picks in a sorta backwards order, like starting at S and going down or starting at F and going up.
Interesting how you changed your mind on koreans. I remember that you put them as one of the more underrated civs and even defended them in the comment section.
I still think that pros haven't figured out how to use longswords against a knight transition which makes dravidiansand Malay imo still slightly underrated in this civ tier list. I think you can hit a crazy longsword timing in early castle age and prevent a full knight switch which gives enough time for a halb arb late game combo. The knight player wants to go up earlier and pressure with siege knight and I think a well timed longsword switch can prevent that
Koreans felt a bit slow vs the top civs sadly
@Hera - Age of Empires 2 yes I Hate them. I have a soft spot for bad civs and basically only play them on Arabia but koreans are thr only civ I have ever played where it felt like I played very well but just lack the option to do anything. Also dravidians but in low level full longswords just melts alot of players at my elo

Really appreciate all your content. Has been helping me on Xbox quite a bit over the past couple months.
I dont get dravidians being where they are at while a civ like bulgaria ends up in bottom tier. I know they get the faster fire rate on their skirms, but bulgaria gets the half priced food blacksmith that works faster, so its easier to afford both upgrades on your skirms. Plus bulgaria gets krepost.
I know dravidians get xbow, but bulgaria has a stable, krepost, cheaper siege upgrades. I'll give you they've got a predictable opening for sure, but I just don't get what makes dravidians that much higher than them.
Dravidians getting alot of wood wvery age is what makes them decent tbh. Knights is much better on xbow and for lower level players tho
@Hera - Age of Empires 2 appreciate the reply. I definitely get that there is a difference in what you face in a match and what I do, so that skews the value of the 200 wood for me.

Hera what did you think of the competition you faced for kotd? You absolutely rammed everyone down and made it look easy. why do you think it looked like that? was it your style being more suited for that tourny?
I disagree that it looked easy at all. The scoreline doesn't tell the full story, almost all the games against Yo and Viper were really close, with long stretches of this games Hera being somewhat behind. My take is that Yo's draft was poor and he didn't adapt properly in some games and Viper was too slow to wall, boomed a little bit greedily and made 1-2 bad engagements more than Hera. And the thing is that the level of this tournament was so high, that 1-2 small mistakes or a minute or 2 of indecision will cost you the game. Hera made the least amount of mistakes and was almost never indecisive so he deservedly won.
The level was quite good, every round had a good challenge, my cleanest performances was vs viper and barles, but i did really well vs yo too. I did poorly vs vinch and was sloppy but manages to pull through. My drafting and general gameplan was what gave me the edge in most sets

Out of curiosity, where will Hera place Roman if they got to ranked arabia games? I would put them S tier on water map, but probably B tier on land maps.

I'm loving the new Incas. Probably the most fun I've had playing a civ. They have a reply to everything. I actually think they're better than the Chinese since they have redemption monks that can counter siege. It all depends on your skill to tech switch.

It's been a year I didn't play AOE2. What kind of buff Portuguese received to go to S tier instead of D ?
I think Vietnamese are a civ that really benefits from hitting down.
If you're better than them, the extra archer HP pushes you over the edge and they become really durable. But if you're worse, it does nothing to help bridge that gap. If you're better, knowing where they are is a big bonus, since you get there faster and can take advantage of that info. But if you're worse, you end up not being able to use that information at all. Same goes for Conscription tbh; if you're better it means a big bonus on hitting imp that can really balloon out and win the game, but if you're worse it's literally just an extra 150g in the imperial age, which is pathetic.
I think that's why a lot of top-tier players rate them highly even though they're almost universally a bottom-tier civ across ELOs. They have nobody to hit *up* against, so they only see the good sides and not the weaknesses.
Hope to see Hera's clumped-up unit get bombarded by Glulam's blast damage one day
Honestly a bit surprised at Slavs, they have a great stable, fantastic barracks, great monks, good siege and serviceable archers (in castle age). Plus they have good eco bonuses...I fail to see how that doesn't add up to a good civ. Not S-tier but also not D-tier...like how? Any civ with the options the Slavs have + eco bonuses has got to be somewhere in the middle.
I know they lack gunpowder and probably that hurts them in the treb wars but that's just one late-game aspect. Their FU Hussars supported by Slav farms kinda makes up for that.
Their eco bonus isnt that good and they usually die to arba halb civs
Poles are playable as long as you turtle a bit until Castle age.
Maybe opening a can of worms here but I honestly think the Portuguese is the best civ in the game right now across every maps.
think about it, on open maps, already covered here on Arabia, and should be similar here. Close map like Arena and BF, even with the recent organ gun nerf, is still top tier. and you can't underestimate the Feitoria. on Nomads again even with the organ gun, FC into UU can still be scary. and then on water maps, Portuguese has always been top 3.
I can't think of another civ that is really good on every single map. Byzantine maybe a close second? For me, I'd argued because of this and the fairly open tech tree makes it the perfect civ for noob (me) cause you can just learn one good civ and you can play every maps.

KOTD5 results (main event, no qualis, 220 games in total)
S-Tier civs:
Malians 14 wins 18 losses 44% win rate
Chinese 13 wins 6 losses 68% win rate
Portuguese 10 wins 17 losses 37% win rate
Incas 9 wins 5 losses 64% win rate
Khmer 12 wins 8 losses 60% win rate
Mayans 13 wins 8 losses 62% win rate
For civs that at least played 5+ games, Chinese had the best win rate followed by Aztecs (8 wins, 4 losses 67% win rate), Incas and Mayans.
Portugese and Malains totally underperform, but only 1 tournament is very little data and the difference between some players level was also big some times.
Funnily enought, Bohemians, last in this list, end up with a 100% win rate! (1 game 1 win in the consolation final, also Italians, Turks and Bengalis played only 1 game that they win, and Sarracens ends with a total domination 3 games 3 wins).
If you are interested in the data of any other particular civs, just ask.

Maybe Ghulams deserve a little bit of melee armor, or even more pierce armor. It's not a perfect example but they get obliterated by Kamayuks it's not even close, and they don't always destroy arbalesters.

I miss the days when Huns were the undisputed number one. How the mighty have fallen with a lowly C tier ranking.
Chinese were still somewhat popular. The IoRI 22p forward vs Daut was a favorite. Everyone who played against him knew it was coming yet it was so lethal. Aztec with the 5 man drush and fast castle. Huns were king, tho.

I can't judge Chinese but for me Incas are broken beyond belief. In addition to having very strong counters against everything they are able to spam tons of eagles early. The counters to mass eagles are almost only imperial units.

Bulgarian is A tier. I can show in a 1 v 1.
After maining Bulgarians for years, it's time for them to get scrapped. I was going to make a long post about their lack of FU ranged options and their horrific economy but the civ is just mediocre no matter what scenario, map pool, or team match composition.
To keep with their steppe-civ + slav identity, just give them final archer armor or steppe lancers and see what happens. Figure either of those changes would at least make the civ fun to play since they lack BOTH paladin and arb (you know... the two units the entire game balance is built around). As it stands now, they're just a hybrid half attempt at Slavs, Poles, and Cumans.

As Magyars weren't affected by the big patch, it seems they were nerfed, as they are too predictable with their scout rush, yet they had very good infantry, almost fully upgradable. Now they got out a bit worse regarding infantry. I'm wondering how the following bonus would work out for them:
"Don't require houses in the dark age." They would require houses as soon as they hit feudal, so you have to build them at least while researching feudal. Houses should be able to be built in dark age, they would just have no effect on population count. This would be historically accurate, as they started out as a nomadic civilization who then switched to being a settled one. I wonder how strong such a bonus would be. You wouldn't really save all that much, as you will need to build those 3 or 4 houses anyway in late dark age, but you could build them a bit later, therefore having a much needed early eco bonus. I think it would not be all that big of a deal, but could be helpful and it would be a nice touch, giving some diversity in playstyle.

The devs really went overboard on Hindustani nerfs.
-Nerfed the eco
-Nerfed the pikeline(worst pikes of all civs)
-Nerfed the ghulam
-Nerfed the camel atkspd
-Nerfed the Range by not having max stats CA
Ofcourse it was bound to snowball. They went from a civ I would be happy to play without the crossbow/knight meta to now being absolute horror if picked because I know Ill always die in early Imp because of no halbs. Early cavalier civs can easily destroy those camels with a few pikes sprinkled in between.
Hindustanis are the worst civ rn out of all Indian civs.
And all of this shit happened due to casters badmouthing at every nook and turn.

Definitely disagree Incas on the A tier. Their kamayuk hard counter CA with their unique upgrade, otherwise they don't have anything that is very powerful. I will put Malians and Mayans into B tier as well.
Turks and Bulgarians have hussar that is even more powerful than cavalier and other gold units. They definitely should go up.
I am glad that Hera does not think Hindustani and Gurjaras camels are being overwhelmingly powerful.

Its funny how Bulgarians have not changed since the big patch but have gotten worse amd worse. Some of it is meta switching grom MAA to early archers, and the emphasis on camels in castle age. I also think gunpowder buffs and the rise of gunpowder civs played its part. There's too many civs it's near hopeless against.
