We can't follow the rules by the book when driving in India because others are not doing it. You are not allowed to overtake from the left but there is option but to do so when a slow moving vehicle is using the right lane. The right lane is for fast moving vehicles but quite often slow buses and trucks also use this lane. So what else can you do other than overtake from the left? You will never reach home if you keep following slow moving trucks on highways.

Bhai mein ek constant speed par chalta hu, only overtake when i am confident enough and use horns and uppar dipper as much as possible. And yes, maintain enough speed and gauge the distance and drivers behaviour before overtaking
Yes bro, driver ka behaviour bhi dekhna jaruri hai.
When recently I was overtaking a large truck on one way then suddenly the oncoming sub driver has speed up with dipper) & made it a dangerous situation for both parties.
Although I take my time & never overtake when there is risk but sometimes other drivers do something deliberately to disturb you.
Bro Indian driving ke hisab se agar koi sach bta rha hai to tum hi bta rhe ho. Ye text book rules apne sahi kaha India mai kam nahi ate.
I have really improved my driving by some of your suggestions like being a bit dominating on Indian roads while staying alert. It has immensely help me in our traffic filled roads of saket where bikers just need a small gap to push their vehicles in front of ours.
