How to move a manual car quickly from a standstill - fast starts.

  • In this video I explain the relationship between the gas and the clutch and how you can use them to make a manual car accelerate quickly from a standstill. I show you examples of different techniques and explain their advantages and disadvantages. I also show you two very fast starts, one in my learner car and the other in my sports car. Although you don't need racing driver levels of performance, having a reasonably level of skill with fast starts will help you take smaller opportunities on busy roundabouts without stalling.

    It never ceases to amaze me that we teach the "Emergency Stop", but never the "Emergency Start", which is highly useful in getting yourself out of danger.

      @@tadassmolskas3014 one time eariler on in my driving i tried to over take a big work truck (not like a pick up truck like a back loader type truck a bit bigger) and when i went to overtake they floored it to speed match me, then a car was coming up on the horizon soon and i slowed down to get back behind them, and then they slammed on the brakes to block me so id be stuck in the oncoming lane, eventually i got around them later and if i had gun i probably would be in jail over it guilty as charged, but yeah that lesson taught me make sure the coast is clear for miles if youre not sure about overtaking, and when you get the chance to overtake and you know its safe then dont be naive about it and just floor it.

      @@Garf2O Their brakes are also correspondingly better. Basically a sports car is much safer than a city car (if you drive it responsibly of course) but authorities continue to charge more for insurance and tax on it!

    Step 1 rev to 6k rpm
    Step 2 quicky release the clutch while In 1st gear and If you feeling spicy you can switch to R for race mode.

    I was practicing this at a red light; as soon as it turned green, I revved it up to about 2000, accidentally dumped the clutch and shot forward. I apologized to my car soon after.

      Did that with an old car that i knew of that stalled easily despite revving up a bit while smoothly releasing the clutch. It turned out later the car had some defects that didn't show up till it got serviced. Anyway, i knew the green in the traffic light cycle was quite short and there were many cars behind me, so this time i somewhat punched the gas as soon as i felt the clutch disk bite. You guessed it, the first bit my tyres spinned a little and i was actually glad i shot a bit forward instead of stalling the damn thing.
      The timing belt i think it was, causing the stationary revs to be too low, causing the issues with getting away without stalling.

    Thanks man! You were there for me when I had a really low point during my driving lessons. My driving teacher had a real grudge against me and would get absolutely furious at me for making even a small mistake. I really got tired of the teacher scolding me. I nearly gave up on getting my license and then found your channel. You motivated me through my remainder of my classes and some of your tips which came in handy. If the teacher yells at you, scolds you, like you say "has a grudge against you" then you should say F_CK YOU to that "teacher" and find yourself a better teacher/instructor. It is ironic that he took money from you and treated you like crap. Don't let anyone else do that to you ever, or ever let anyone do that to your child. Everyone needs a positive, supportive environment and especially children.

    I never knew higher revs made the biting point bigger, had a disaster trying to move off a busy roundabout cos I was way too slow with it but this made it make a lot more sense

      It's not that the biting point that gets bigger but the bog down part that gets smaller, because you are already holding the gas pedal so the gear is already engaged.

      The biting point doesn't really get bigger, it gets less important as more gas makes more power even if you're not quite at the biting point yet, so essentially you can get the same amount of acceleration while the clutch is still further down

      It doesn’t really, there’s levels of biting point lowest you’ll move off slow and then higher you’ll move off quicker but you need gas to get a good take off and giving more gas you have 0 chance of stalling just bogging if you come off too quick 🤣

      If you’re at 900 rpms it’s easy to stop it cuz bruh you aren’t powering it, and if you’re applying gas then you’re stopping it from stalling, and the bog down part is just that your gears synced with the engine suddenly. This way the rpm gets dragged down cuz your wheel rpm is 0

      @@justkev1044 the bogged down part is where you come off the clutch too quickly, you don’t even need to know your bite point really as long as u have enough gas until it comes to steep hills

    Not sure if you're still reading the comments, but you are the reason I love driving manual cars. I was able to pass my driving test, but I had never really felt confident with a manual (my instructor was terrible). I would sweat every time I was the first one in a line to a red traffic light (doubly so when adding an incline into the picture). Driving in town used to feel like a chore, but then I encountered this video. It took a few attempts in a parking lot, but I was finally able to do it. I am now as confident when driving a manual as I am in an automatic car. As a matter of fact, I enjoy driving a manual much more than driving an automatic. Whenever someone encounters a problem in driving a manual car, I send them a link to your channel.

    I know this is an older video, but I just got my first manual and it happens to be a sports car that produces max torque around 4500 RPM, so I've come back to this video several times just to remember what you said about the recommended RPMs to get going and to watch your starts to get a better understanding of starting smoothly. Thanks for all of this content by the way, it really is the most clear for every different component of driving I've had to learn. As an American, not many people here know how to drive manual and I've struggled finding someone I know to teach me, so these videos have been a lifesaver.

    I got my licence two years ago, but bought my first car only this summer. I learnt driving on a diesel back then, and given the engine's torque, it was easy to get it moving even when doing just as much as carefully lifting the clutch pedal (and then slowly adding some gas at the biting point). That's why I currently struggle with my petrol engine car, especially when I have to move on at traffic lights - I instinctively want to apply the same technique that I've gotten used to while learning on that diesel, even though it takes ages to get it moving with that technique. Needless to say, this is certainly undesirable in heavier city traffic, and a major source of anxiety whenever I have to drive in such conditions.
    This video helps me a lot visually in memorizing the technique that should be used with my petrol car, and already practiced a lot based on it. Absolutely no one could explain this to me so far, so many thanks for sharing it! You absolutely rock, Richard! ;)

    Very helpful, I’m always weary with taking off faster at junctions and roundabouts with fear of stalling if I lift the clutch too high too quick . I will definitely try this thanks

      when i was learning to drive, i drove in a diesel. Diesel engines are much more powerfull and you can manage with clutch only in most situations without fear of stalling. Then i needed to drive a gasoline car for work and oh boy those are 'nervous' once they stand still with the engine still purring calmly. especially with older more used up cars you need to punch the gas quite a bit to prevent stalling. Making it a bit of a sport to lift off without spinning the wheels might make you very proficient at it in a short time.

      Hey man, don't worry about stalling! It happens to all of us, even the most experienced :)
      I'm not sure, but I think stalling brings no real damage to your car (as long as it's not dumping the clutch with the handbrake on), so don't work yourself over it. If it happens, just dial a back a bit on the level of driving, keep those revs up and slowly pull away :) don't worry about driving fast, worry about enjoying the feel of the car and being safe!     I had a feeling giving gas makes it easier to find and hold the bite point. These videos are doing great work as always.
    Another thing I started doing after watching your videos is keeping my heel where the brake is and only pressing the gas with the tip of the shoe, that made it heaps easier to find the pedals.

    This is such a good video. Bought my first manual this past weekend (scion frs) with 0 experience and I keep coming to this video for review. The idea of keeping gas down a bit and pulsing the clutch has helped me immensely In dealing with Chicago traffic! I was so worried that would cause excessive wear on it

      Nice car, it will cause excessive wear if you hold the clutch at the bite point for a long time or use too many revs. But the clutch is designed to be pulsed to keep the car slow. It is worth noting that Town/City does wear a car more than highway driving. It's not avoidable.

      Nice first car! I went for a Legacy 2.5i as first car, not as fun but a bit more practical.
      Clutch pulsing is interesting. to go slowly I tend to cuddle the tipping point and use just enough gas not to stall instead of pulsing the clutch, I'll try and learn. Especially in reverse, I stall more in reverse. Thanks for the advice!

    After getting used to manuals I would blip the throttle up to 1, 1.5k revs to get going quicker not really thinking about it, just felt natural. It's interesting to learn why it's felt smoother and more natural

      Idk why, but most driving schools in croatia teaches you how to drive in a 2.0 tdi golf 7 with loooads of torque and a clever ecu, that basicly adds soo much gas, you can do a hill start on a 10% grade with no gas. But thats stupid. So you passed your driving test, now its time for a new car. 90% of first cars in croatia are made before 2002, and have less then 100 nm of torque. They dont even teach you how to pull up a normal handbrake. So when you try to do a hill start, after passing your test with no minors, you are guaranteed to stall.

      You can press all three at the same time, you’ll go through windscreen and your poor engine with see the higher end of its tolerances but you could press all three at the same time.

    Hi, thanks for these videos. I had my first lesson today after passing my theory test last week.
    I thought the manual nature of the car with the clutch and biting point etc. would be the difficult part. I found what was *much* more difficult was getting used to how sensitive the brakes and acceleration were but how not-very-sensitive the steering was. So don't be afraid of manuals! It's not that hard, the hard bit is everything else haha

    All of your last videos are exactly for my problems and the only things I couldn't understand. I am learning in Israel on a manual and because 95% of people here drive an automatic, my instructor teaches me how to pass a driving test and barely teaches me manual driving skills (which is understandable and good, but a mix between the 2 would be perfect). I probably owe 99% of my knowledge in driving a manual to you. Thank you very much and keep up your amazing work!

    Thanks 👍 for all your videos on you channel. They are so so helpful. Especially when you remember the most important thing to drive safely and having no accident. Because I messed a bit up at parking, didn't touch anything, but it could be better. Well at least I know my mistake (using reference points from the driving school car and obviously I drive a different car). Hopefully I will get someday the experience and become a better driver. You literally just pushed me and gave me more confidence. Just keep it up with your way of explaining, creating videos and finding topics for content💪👍😁

    I used to have a slightly slipping clutch which was unexpectedly comfortable. I could just rev to 1500, drop the clutch and it just sorted itself out with a smooth start.

      I can see how a slipping clutch would make smooth starts easier, but it's not going to last long and you would struggle to accelerate quickly.

      When you're just learning you should find the biting point first then add revs as you release the clutch slowly. As you get more experienced you will lift the clutch as you depress the accelerator almost like a see saw.

    Needed to get on a busy Autobahn from stand still, I was so nervous that I lifted the clutch at max rpm (4,5k rpm, Diesel). I smelt sth burning, either the clutch or wheels, maybe both. Was a fun and dangerous experience at the same time.

    This helps me out a ton! I've been trying to get better at rolling from a dead stop n everytime I'm slow and the engine bogs down. But, if I use the throttle I tend to chirp the tires or lurch the car foward and stall it. I believe I'm releasing the clutch too fast most of the time, just dumping clutch

      @adam If you're in really slow traffic it's more like lifting it up, since you're close to stationary and just lifting a little to get a small amount of bite to nudge forward.
      Also consider stopping, applying the handbrake and taking the car out of gear. Some drivers are always right up the back of the car in front, but if the traffic is nearly stationary they're getting nowhere but burning their clutch unnecessarily: Just wait, let the gap open up a bit and then back into gear, find the bit point, handbrake off and gently close the gap, then back on the handbrake. Best to be laid back in really slow traffic.

    For a post 2010 model year car this is good advice. For cars with basic drive by wire, or no drive by wire you need more revs, or add a bit of throttle. Modern cars don't have a throttle pedal anymore, but rather a "RPM target" pedal. If you let the clutch bite, the computer will automatically add more throttle to keep the RPMs at the target. The deeper you press the pedal, the higher the RPM target and also the stronger the car pulls to that RPM target. On older cars you have to either start with a bit higher RPM, since the dropoff is bigger, or you need to add a bit more gas right after the clutch started biting.
    This is very easily demonstrated by holding the throttle pedal at one position while accelerating. The car wil accellerate up to say 2500RPM, and then the acceleration drops off. At 3000 RPM the car will no longer accelerate without you moving the pedal. If you then shift gears and put the throttle pedal at the same position, the car will accelerate again up until that same 3000 RPM. On older cars the car will just keep accelerating until resistance is equal to power. In a lower gear that means 7000 RPM, while in top gear this is 1500RPM for example.
    I don't understand why car manufacturers started doing this. Does anyone else? It makes driving a lot more jerky, especially with those DSG transmissions. You screech away from the stoplight but at 30 kph it just stops accelerating. All while not moving my foot from the initial position.

    I would summarize this by saying the faster you want to take off, the more gas you need to give the car, an the faster you need to let up the clutch.
    With no gas, it might take 6 seconds to come completely off the clutch, and you will takeoff extremely slowly.
    A normal start might involve 25% throttle and it might take 2 seconds to come off the clutch completely. This would be a casual takeoff.
    At half throttle, it might take a full second to come off the clutch completely. This would be a brisk takeoff, like pulling out into an decent opening in traffic.
    For the fastest possible takeoff, you would floor the accelerator and the clutch would come up completely in a half second. If timed properly, the rpm should not spike over 3k but not dip below 1.5k either.

    Great video, thank you. I'm able to drive normally, but would like to be able to drive spirited as you show in this video every once in a while and this helps a lot. Could you talk a little about that 1st to 2nd gear change that you did when accelerating quickly on your race car? I notice you were able to pull up the clutch much quicker than when doing normal 1st to 2nd gear changes.

      Thank you. That takes many years of practise. What I would say is change gear slowly at first, with hours and many thousands of gear changes you will get faster as you learn exactly how fast and when to pause if needed when coming off the clutch. I still get it wrong sometimes to this day. All part of the joy of driving a manual, it's a never ending skill, you will be getting better your whole life if you drive regularly.

      @@ConquerDriving I will second this. 1st to 2nd is where there is the greatest force of torque on gear changes. You'll bog down or lurch forwards and it will take you many many attempts to get used to it because it isnt the same as changing from 2nd to 3rd or 3rd to 4th etc. You need to hold the clutch at the bite point between 1st and 2nd gear a little longer than the rest of the gears and try to be more smooth with it.

    I've just learned a valuable lesson I'd like to pass along:
    Clutches aren't the only thing you have to worry about hurting when it comes to quick starts in modern cars.
    Most modern engines with manual transmissions now have spring-dampened, dual mass flywheels. These flywheels are also susceptible to failure by overheating, but most especially by SHOCK LOAD.
    If you aren't careful and just dump the clutch completely out at high revs, you will damage the dual mass flywheel. I'm replacing mine now after a day at the drag strip.
    Also, don't think you can just replace with a solid flywheel with no cons. Modern engines have higher compression, and are engineered to make power down low in the rev range to save fuel where engine balancing is tougher. The dual mass flywheel is there to soak up rotational vibration to keep your engine happy and quiet. Without it, your engine and geartrain will be noisier and may not live as long. So if you go that route, other considerations need to be made.

      @@beccachadwick5004 only a car with defects is an excuse to stall all the time. You just need to learn to control both pedals smoothly. The first acceleration for any car is the hardest part for a car. it needs to be gradual and you need to give the engine enough fuel and a bit of slip on the clutch to punch through, especially with gasoline cars, especially when they get older.
