railguns will not work in space for futuristic warfare, I'm sorry. why? because... IF we ever get to the point that we have the ability to even fight over space resources, we would have likely developed propulsion technology that can easily move multiple times Earth's own escape gravity. If we can't even harness the energy of the entire Earth to fire a projectile into space reliably right now, there's no way in hell any projectile fired in space(where the battles will be taking place across a 3D space that would easily cover over a hundred trillions times more volumetric "battlefield area") would EVER make contact with it's target, EVEN if we could fire projectiles at 10-100 times faster than Earth's escape gravity.
250,000 mph is nothing in a space that extends 100,000,000 miles. And that would be merely a subplanetary field of battle. A solar level field of battle would be 10 billions miles of tactically impactful battlefield width(in all dimensions).
Besides the ineffectiveness? Unless we solve physics and learn how to employ inertial confinement within relative space, railguns would need to be counteracted by incredibly powerful and precise propulsion technologies that would need to eithr use opposite-vector firing of shells(great tactic when on "front-lines"), or use another method of equally cancelling the recoiling force of firing the projectile.
Naturally, the most effective method of mitigating recoiling forces is to distribute them through as much mass as possible.
Again I remind you; we don't even know how to launch something into orbit via this method, and even after doing so.....
