They just announced that Pat Benetar and Duran Duran are going to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And Richard Thompson will probably never make it. The world makes no sense!
We should start a Folk music Hall of Fame. But Richard might not get in. 😀Many fantastic musicians could be considered before him: Andy Irvine & many of his various band colleagues. Martin & Eliza Carthy. Robbie McMahon, Robbie O'Connell, Dubliners. Dubliners, Clancy Brothers, Wartones.
He’s too good for that commercial farce, although I wouldn’t compare Duran Duran to Pat Benatar, she is a ground breaking artist that can seriously sing.

Heard Pentangle perform this in Belfast in about 1965 or 6. Loved it then, love it now. Someone mentioned Little Musgrave. Much as I love Christy Moore and all his work, for me Little Musgrave doesn't begin to compare with this.
Fantastic solo rendition by Richard - easily the best I have heard solo, as you might expect. An absolute delilght to hear him doing it. Matty Groves and it variants (e.g. Little Musgrave) almost certainly originate the North of England, not in Scotland (as you imply), but, as hecorrectly says, it dates from the 1500s, although the first published versions date from the 17th century. Oh, and Fairport Convention wasn't 'my band', as he well knows. Formed jointly by RT, Simon Nicol and Ashley Hutchings (and named after Simon's parents' house). The traditional repertoire was, of course, introduced to the band primarily by the late Sandy Denny. Brilliant job by shelly570 getting this up on CZcams - a little gem.
Fanstastic song by fantastic artist … RT is ace. A visit to an RT Concert is a must. As a side issue the song always reminds of little musgrave - planxty - beautiful tune worth checking out.
The melody was appropriated, and the lyrics changed significantly, to become the traditional folk song "Shady Grove", played by Doc Watson, Ricky Skaggs, Jerry Garcia & Davis Grisman, Tom Petty and others. No longer a murder ballad!
I used to get into that alt tuning stuff, but got tired of replacing broken strings. You can be as expressive as you ever need in standard tuning. But it does sound great.
I'm generally not a fan of older singers. RT is my age, and he still sings fine. But I guess I haven't heard him recently. Here, his voice is starting to go. The usual suspects - lost range and volume. But his voice is still good enough to sing. Some I hear are just horrible. Like Ian Anderson, and so many others of that era. It's more like they are rhythmically talking than singing. Who would pay to hear that? (the answer is, NOT ME!). But I just read that he had a stroke 2 years ago. That pushed my admiration for him even higher! But it made me question if I'd ever pay to see him... But damn, I like his music!
Re Thompson’s voice going: Did you hear Paul Simon before he retired? McCartney? Dylan (that should go without saying, but I said it.) I think he sounds fine, and his fingers haven’t lost their magic

Some day, I might turn down a RT show, but when? He is one of those guys who transcends vocals. Everything works with him. Very few sing well into their 60's. A voice is a finite instrument. I was listening to a guy my age (73) sing a blues song, online. His voice was a bit ragged - but it fit the style of music. Similarly, I've always wanted to meet Jimmy Carter. I saw a photo of him and Roselyn last week. But can they get out of their wheelchairs, today? Like seeing Jagger, I'd rather keep my memories of them from their earlier, more vital days. I sang in a touring band for 5 years, until 35. Do I still sing? Yes. In public, or into a recorder? NO! I'll let my mind smooth out my voice, and leave it at that!

I'm pretty he means 'my band' as in the band I was a member of - rather than trying to claim to have founded it.
