Man, I tell you what, Richard Thompson is one hell of a good guitar player. You don’t often hear his name mentioned among the guitar greats, but he can hang with the best of them, whether playing like this or fingerstyle acoustic. He’s fantastic.
Easily in my top 5 - at least within his generation's roots music realm. Top 3 among the living. Perhaps only Peter Green, Ry Cooder, Clarence White and Bert Jansch have a seat at that small table - in my estimation.
I'm a big fan of Cream and a big fan of Richard Thompson and I loved this. He stayed true to the original while still giving it an unmistakable dash of RT flavour.
Incredible performance. His playing is legendary but one thing I always appreciate about RT is how his accent shines through in his vocals. It’s so true to his speaking voice and his range is very impressive.

Just discovered this after nearly 8 years. What a surprising choice and what a brilliant rendition. Absolutely as good as Cream. Special credit to Michael Jerome for his authentic drumming.
This is rather good, English understatment, it's refreshing and liberating to hear Thompson let rip like this as a rock power trio. He should do more of it... a whole album would be great.

There's no one like MIchael! We shared a table at lunchtime in the BVI and after about 3 minutes I realized was sitting with RICHARD'S DRUMMER! He's as nice a guy as he is great drummer!
I absolutely LOVE English electric bands from the 60's. We were very lucky to have been old enough to experience them in the beginning. I'll include The Jimi Hendrix Experience along with Cream, etc. etc. etc. THANKS!

And he's doing this with a blink in the eye with this trio. This is sort of their tribute to a great musician friend, Jack Bruce. He, they, know that they cannot do it like the outmost purists should want them to. If you want that, then regresse some 40 years.
This is why Iowa City is one of the greatest cities. Incredible free, open air concerts every Friday and Saturday night in the summer! Two of the best shows I've ever seen have been in downtown IC. (This was one of them)
The sound quality is primo! I got to chat with him a little after a gig in Paris a few years ago. He is the most charming, self-effacing musician you could ever hope to meet. He finally seems to be getting the amount of fans he deserves, after about 45 years in the biz. Funnily enough, I have more North American friends who are familiar with him than British.
Yeah, what the hell??!!! Actually over FORTY years of his career wah-wah-less. Wish he would have really busted loose at the end for an extended solo. Is there no end to his talent?!
This was the 2nd great RT concert at an Iowa City Arts Fest. 1st one he was solo. Just incredible both times. Don't think I'll ever forget these two performances. Thanks RT.
Thompson's penchant for really letting go in concert in a band situation really depends on his drummer. Michael Jerome just freaking kicks ass, so Thompson has to keep up...

I think I've seen some of Richard's ability to play anything well. Saw him once and he did Britney Spears'Oops I Did it Again, much to the amusement of the crowd. The man never fails to impress.
Isn't it interesting, that this man, who has largely chosen to remain out of the spotlight throughout his career, is actually a contemporary of Clapton and others, and that he still continues to grow and amaze, even as many of his 'peers' have sunk into complacency and irrelevance?
Why does everyone have to be better than so and so. RT is great, EC is great too. Both different, enjoy both and be thankful for both. ps. I've seen RT over 20 times in my life and the man is a genius.

I was there too. I am a big fan since Fairport days, but we had to leave that show for the sake of our ears. It was like being hit in the chest with a large chair. Absolutely deafening. Much, much louder than The Who.
He couldn't quite get pitch on the very highest notes and I was thinking how a pro like him can learn how to stretch himself without overdoing it to point of damage. He was holding back on the very highest to avoid damaging himself. He writes songs in his range and it can be tough doing copy songs you really like that go just beyond your own range but lure you into trying them anyway. RT wont be singing Brad Delp or Steve Perry copies in the same key unless he goes down an octave.
Lucky you! I've always wanted to have a chat with Richard. He's always seemed as you say, like a good dude. Being a guitar player, RT is one of my top my musical heroes.
I spoke to Mr T many years ago when he was promoting Hand of Kindness. He was super nice, even to an awestruck fanboy like me. He has piercing eyes, which you cannot see from a video or even when you see him on stage.

True, I’ve seen him play solo acoustic several times, and he can go from folk to rock all by himself.
Richard can carry a concert by himself. He sounds like whole band when he plays live, and it has nothing to do with Ableton.
What strikes me is that they're having FUN. I remember times like this as a musician.

He is kind of shy/reserved, I had a chance to talk with him in Northern Minnesota after a benefit show he did.
