CLIP DESCRIPTION:
A pair of street thugs meet their violent end at the hands of Vincent (Tom Cruise).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
A taxi driver is unexpectedly taken on the ride of his life in this stylish thriller from acclaimed director Michael Mann. Max (Jamie Foxx) is a cab driver who hopes to some day open his own limo company; one night behind the wheel begins promisingly when he picks up Annie (Jada Pinkett Smith), an attorney working with the federal government who is attractive, friendly, and gives him her business card after paying her fare. Max thinks his luck is getting even better when his next fare, Vincent (Tom Cruise), offers him several hundred dollars in cash if he'll be willing to drop him off, wait, and pick him up at five different spots over the course of the evening. Max agrees, but he soon realizes Vincent isn't just another guy with errands to run -- Vincent is an assassin who has been paid to murder five people who could put the leaders of a powerful drug trafficking ring behind bars in an upcoming trial. As circumstances force Max to do Vincent's bidding, the cabbie has to find a way to prevent Vincent from killing again and save his own skin, a task that becomes especially crucial when he discovers Annie is one of the names on Vincent's hit list. Collateral also stars Mark Ruffalo, Peter Berg, and Bruce McGill as police detectives hot on Vincent's trail.

As usual, Tom doing all his own stunts. He actually shot and killed these two guys.
Really? Gosh...
@Terminus Est scientology**
😂
Nope. Just good acting . They did not really die. Fake bullets.
Yep, the state legislature gave him special exemption from murder charges... because he's Tom Cruise.
Michael Mann seems to be the only person in Movie making that knows what gun sounds like.
because he uses real guns with blank rounds and not prop guns with sound effects.
@@scyorkshire2496 I doubt that last shot into the head of the prone guy was a blank round. Ever since Brandon Lee accidentally got killed on the set of the Crow, most stunt coordinators don't allow guns with blank rounds to be directly fired in the direction of another actor's body. Often the actor fires at an angle that would miss but with the camera in a position where it looks like they're still aligned or shell casings and muzzle flashes are added in post production. In the John Wick movies that are directed by Chad Stahelski, who was Brandon Lee's stunt double for the Crow, the majority of the muzzle flashes including all the ones where Wick is shooting someone point blank are actually CGI.
Literally had that thought, immediately saw this comment
@@mrquirky3626 Very good reply. However, with the camera looking directly in line with the body and Tom Cruise's arm, he could have moved his arm more to the right, to shoot above the other actor's head, and be aiming at the floor. From this angle, it would be very hard to tell he wasn't aiming at his head. :)
Except in the scene where he uses a silencer
THAT is how a gun is supposed to sound. Whoever do the recording for the sounds of a gun, they nailed it on this scene.
It's live ammunition
@Mark Smith Indeed, it was fantastic. Props to them!

Wow..overdosed on lead.

@luey Hewis But looking back, it's still a bit fuzzy
Looking back, I like how Vincent also tricks the punks with his expressions. He doesn't show anger or stoic like he's ready for a fight. He actually looks like he's showing fear to make them think he's an easy mark, holding his hands up but with one lower than the other
Classic Sun Tzu tactic
no coincidence, the lower hand is his shooting hand... faster draw!
High hand sweeps the weapon from the homey and low hand draws from the hip without raising to shoot. classic.

No it doesn’t
Depends what is defined as old. This scene is 17 years old. In some countries it is already old but in some countries is way too young.
6 months since you wrote this...still no
This is how an action sequence should be shot. Leave the goddamn camera alone, don't have incessant cutting between perspectives, just set the camera down and let the actors act.
Facts
Yes
And make the fight moves believable.
True, but 99% of the actors can't shoot and certainly not like this. It took Cruise months of intensive training.
Two words : Michael Mann.
Michael Mann always has the best gunshot audio in his films, Heat, Public Enemies, Collateral will all give you PTSD.
He prefers blanks. The cast of HEAT suffered hearing damage from the protracted fight scenes.
He should make a western or anti war movie.
Thank you so much for mentioning other movie. I haven't watched Public Enemies, now I will. Any other good Michael Mann's movies?
I love how in your face and loud whenever he has gunfights in his movies are.

For anyone who hasn't seen the full film: You haven't seen Tom Cruise's character kill anyone on screen yet or display any skill. This scene establishes Vincent as a true professional.

Tom Cruise really needs to start playing more villains. He was fucking great as Vincent in this movie.
I see Tom Cruise as an all-round great actor (Edge of Tomorrow shows he can play slimy, spineless cowards really, really well), but I agree with you; he is even more fantastic when he is playing antagonistic or villainous characters. Also, while I don't consider him to be as good an actor (though I like him all the same), I place Russell Crowe in the same vein; I don't like him very much when he's playing good guys, but he is amazing and entertaining when playing evil/asshole/douchebag characters.
Couldn't agree more dude. Cruise fucking KILLED this role! Always wanted him to do another like it or play a villian as well

I loved this scene. I damn near died when Cruise says, "Yo homie, that's my briefcase." In a dumbed down version to relate with these two idiots. 😂😂😂
That’s not what he said.
Everything about this scene is literal perfection, from the acoustics of the gunfire in a tight alleyway, the sounds of the shell casings hitting the pavement and bouncing around, to the flawless tactics/weapon handling, the cinematography, and even the lack of proper technical skill on the two stick up kids. It’s gets no better than this. Masterpiece of a film.
Michael Mann baby... an some help from Mick Gould to train Cruise in weapons handling

Why did the guy with short hair take so long to take his gun out though?
@@vir4193 Because he was untrained and under duress. It only took a couple of seconds. Most untrained joe blows wouldn’t be able to draw a gun and get a shot off in that amount of time with that much stress involved.
Tom Cruise's acting was hauntingly good. Should have had an oscar.

The gun acoustics in this scene are nothing short of amazing. Very realistic, doesn’t get any better.
That last shot echoed between the brick and mortar of the city 10/10 sound design
I’m no expert, but you can easily tell how serious Tom took his firearms training in this shot. Drawing from the hip when in close quarters, to his perfect stance and grip of the pistol.
Val Kilmer pulled it off perfectly like that in Heat, another Michael Mann film as well.

The moral of the story, never to steal a man's briefcase or kill his dog.
Yo homie, that my dog?
The first time Tom Cruise played a villain or anti hero and he killed it, it takes a lot of bravery efforts and skills for an actor who's so used to being a star hero to actually go against his general style and play such a ruthless cold blooded ferocious and deadly assassin. Hats off Mr Cruise. Imagine him playing a villain rather than a hero in the MI series.

Still this day he's still believed to be in an train somewhere in LA
Imo this is his best role because it was against the grain, he was just so believable as Vincent.
He's not an antihero by any stretch of the imagination. He's a villain through and through. A cool one yes but a villain nonetheless

Those gun shot sounds always make the hair on my arms perk up. So loud and so realistic. Also the savagery from Vincent after grabbing his suitcase and taking a quick headshot without even looking was perfect. I was 14 when this movie came out in theaters and still one of my favorites. Prequel of Vincent is needed ASAP!
Great Idea, but Tom cant stay eternally 40 forever :D
@@geno604 never tell Tom Cruise he cant do something. NEVER.
It sounds super loud because 1. It is. 2. Everything prior to it in the scene was purposely recorded quiet. So when the shots came, theatre goers would leap out of their seats. Which I nearly did.
I forgot Michael Mann directed this movie, but then the gun fired.
There was briefly a TV series Crime Story. Michael Mann was Exec. Producer, but not the director. That was a classic Michael Mann production. The style, the clothes, the cars, the music, the displays of violence. Damn it's too bad it got suddenly cancelled after just 2 or 3 seasons.
Anyway, one memorable death in that is when a huge and mean enforcer in Las Vegas gets killed in the middle of the street in broad daylight. Everyone scatters except there is a shabby no-name crossing the street. He ambles up for a closer at the body and starts laughing, "I owed that guy money!"
@Patrick Whelpley More so than that, the final shot of Collateral with the train departing is a mirror of the first shot in Heat.
A nice little call back, albeit done on digital instead - if there is one thing I could fault this film for it was shooting on early digital for which the night scenes did not turn out so well in my opinion.
Mann. One of the few directors that understood the importance of sound ambience in action movies.
Haha the man is a master of the gun sound effect.
I forgot Michael Mann directed this movie, but then the glorification of private military contractors happened
The complete disregard with which he fires that last shot. The professional being annoyed by the amateur wasting his time.
I suppose you are referring to the headshot. It is not out of annoyance. 2 in the chest, 1 in the head is a standart CQB firing drill named ''Mozambique Drill''. Drill ensures the enemy is dead and cannot do any more harm. He just delivered the ''1 in the head'' later than first 2.
Cem Aksoy I know what a Mozambique or failure to stop drill is. The point was he doesn’t even bother to look to deliver the headshot. It’s a deliberate decision showing his skill and prowess over the people he defeated.

Hank J. Wimbleton Public Enemies is so dope. Depp was a great Dillinger and the shootout at the cabin with following car chase was incredibly done.

What really shows Vincent’s professional as a hit man, is how he looked scared as the guy was coming toward him, to lull him into a false sense of security, then bang , bang bang it’s over for them!! Great scene!
Truly great b psychopathy!
Ummm Vincent is probably the dumbest hitman because after he killed these thugs he shoulda killed Max with them and caught a new ride. He has no reason to keep him alive at this point.
Also, something noteworthy is, he picked up his briefcase before the shot to the head because the body would seize up and grip the handle tighter.

Found that beautiful channel thanks to this comment. So, again, thanks man.
I don’t know hand to hand combat and I’m far from an expert, but Vincent does grab the first assailant’s wrist and draw his (the bad guy’s) weapon across his (Vincent’s) body before he shoots him. In theory, there was time for assailant one to fire his weapon as it was briefly pointed at Vincent. Is this the way this is taught? Or would one preferably immediately direct the bad guy’s weapon to Vincent’s left so it doesn’t point at Vincent at all, even for a half second? Not to quibble. Scene’s amazing. My buddies and I do lots of handgun drills at the range but never involving close range combat scenarios.
@@flamecolumn Really great question. First, we're talking about not just the time needed to pull the trigger, but the reaction time for an assailant to realize things are going south after being surprised by someone he thought was surrendering. I think Vincent redirects the muzzle to the right to match the natural bending of the elbow making the move easier, and to position his body as much as possible for the target transition toward the second assailant. Distance equals time, so if he goes to the left, it's going to take longer to flip his hips and engage a guy that has seen what is going on and is clearly a threat.
Extreme close range gunfighting has continued to evolve in the past 15 years. If you're interested, I highly recommend taking a class from Craig at ShivWorks, (a pioneer of many of the newer techniques) or other excellent instructors who incorporate his methods into their classes. I had the honor of learning from Drew at Baer Solutions and Ian at RuneNation. Both host excellent concealed carry classes, and if you can find a joint class with both like I did, go for it! Happy training and stay safe out there!
Christopher G Outstanding information. Thanks very much. I see exactly what you’re saying. By the time he has finished putting the first two rounds in bad guy one, he is already squared up on bad guy two. I would like to take some classes teaching the fundamentals of these techniques. Running and gunning at the range is one thing. Being able to think through and solve a problem like this is next level. Having said that, I wonder if Vincent wouldn’t have simply shot both guys between the shoulder blades instead of putting himself in unnecessary danger.
Tom Cruise has to be in John Wick 5
The gunshot effects in this movie are unreal. I loved the way this movie was filmed too and I like Tom's suit lol
One of the more realistic close quarters gunfight scenes I’ve watched, I love how he disarms the first guy and shots him as soon as the pistol clears the holster Cruise has had some good real life self defense training
It was the same guy who worked with Mann in Heat. Retired 22nd SAS IIRC.
@@fester2306 Yep...Mick "Something-Or-Other," whose last name eludes me for the moment. He's a legit former SAS operator who Mann has tapped a few times to do technical consulting, and who shares Mann's "relentless perfectionist" approach to getting things right in a movie.
He did indeed work on "Heat." Besides training up the principle actors in tactics and weapons-handling, he planned out, choreographed. and gave technical advice on the insane gun battle in the latter part of the movie. I think it certainly does show; Deniro, Kilmer, and Sizemore were running what looked to me like a textbook "break contact" drill.
For "Collateral," he really put Cruise through the ringer: hours and hours and hours of CQB training, mostly conducted with live rounds so he would learn to handle his piece like an armed professional. I think it likewise shows as well... ;-)
@@somedrytoast2307 I may be wrong but I think 'Andy' primarily advised on Heat, whereas (also ex SAS) Mick Gould was the main advisor on Collateral
Not only what he said but tom beat it within a time shorter than what the director demanded so he has a deadly quickdraw confirmed
Pretty strong argument for keeping a round in the chamber 😂
If you mean the long haired robber, I'm sure he did. His mistake was shoving his gun in Vincent's face--getting within arm's reach and giving Vincent the chance to knock his arm aside. That's one advantage of having a gun: You can keep some distance between yourself and your adversary. The punk had to play badass, though, and, up until he got two bullets put in him, was enjoying the feeling of power and dominance that comes with knowing you're putting someone in fear for their life. As for the bald guy, he should've had his gun in a proper holster or, better yet, in his hand instead of just stuffed down his pants.
@@Arbeedubya Most bad guys aren't very thoughtful, or trained, with their mostly 3rd rate weapons. I think they should have done exactly what they did, being the bad guys and all....

I accidentally found this clip, now I suddenly think I'll watch this movie. Read what its about and it seems...intriguing
that last headshot without even looking is prob the smoothest movie kill in history!!
Foreal he didn't care about his life at all lol. He wouldn't give a sunflower seed shell for his life
He puts a round in the head of the other guy as he's falling from the previous two rounds. That's just badass.
Rule of 3. 2 to the chest, 1 to the head
It's him utilising his classic pattern, whenever he can he uses the Mozambique Drill. Plus here the guy was still moving and Vincent definitely doesn't want any witnesses to his mission tonight.
You gotta love how smooth Vincent is.
This movie sooo underrated.
Never thought "yo homie" could sound so poetic.
Tom Cruise was so cold blooded in this movie. It was great!
@Mitchell Hart John Wick is pretty much sci-fi at this point.
This is how every sad middle aged concealed carry guy sees themselves.
@@colin-campbell LOL
@Mitchell Hart I wouldn't really say realism, the only realistic thing in this scene is the sound.
I wish he killed those guys slower
The sound in this scene is everything
Michael Mann is one of the best directors to film Los Angeles - his LA always has that fantastic hazy cinematic look. 🎥🎬
That was John Wick Level.
Cooler than John Wick dare I say
I hope you make Apostate Prophet the next Nabeel.
Vincent was first John Wick is a poser!
Omg, my dream come true. Im watching movieclips with my favourite person!

No, not when it's Keanu Reeves.
As an older, greying gentleman, when I find myself in precarious circumstances surrounded by ruffians, I say "Yo Homie, is that my briefcase" and they scatter ...
You sir are a funny gentleman lol
Lol!
Being an older, greying gentleman myself, I will try to remember your example, good sir. Thank you. LOL.
tempjohn1111 Y'u d'a man tamponjohn!
*Graying...yes, the spelling nazis have arrived...lol
Michael Mann is one of the absolute Best directors…
Especially in making the city and sounds come alive…making you feel like you’re almost an onlooker on set !
Great movie and a great scene and Foxx and cruise are two movie icons!
Apparently the script called for Tom Cruise to fire the five shots in 1.6 seconds.
He clocked in at 1.39 seconds...
+badr selfaoui With a 3 pound trigger and practice that isnt that hard fyi
+Dr. Death dont forget blanks. Those have next to no recoil. Anybody can look like a total badass shooting blanks.
+SpenzOT There is a video of him training for the film. He is using live ammunition during.
fb09jc Live ammo wasn't used in the film though.....
+Dr. Death for real ? I thought it was all real. Tom Cruise died at the end as well !
And that kids is why you always use a proper holster
+Sergei Ivanovich Mosin yuuup

I love it when crackheads get killed
And always 1 in the chamber
And practice
But if a dolly had bitten him, he would be of no use. 🏃🏃🏃🏃🏃👽👽🐭🐭
I could watch this a thousand times.
The best scene of the movie. The best scene for most any movie. Flawless gunplay and positioning. Gunshots not muted for audience comfort. The confidence of Vincemt knowing exactly how the scene wil play out. Marvelous! ❤
One of the most technically accurate shooting scenes in any movie. Right down to the proper stance, draw of the handgun, grip and hold of the weapon, shoot 2 rounds from the hip at close range, and the 2 in the chest 1 in the head for the 2nd guy. Excellent job by the technical advisors on this one.

It's litterally a basic combat drill, a 'boxing drill'. czcams.com/video/DRTqQjvlPs4/video.htmlm6s
It's the "Mozambique Drill", very common in combat pistol training.

0:57 "Yo homie" Get the popcorn.
That draw/presentation… goosebumps
Still to this day one of the coolest scenes ever. Love that hip fire.
You can say what you want about Cruise, but he is a damn good actor. And he is ferocious in this movie.
Yeah...I think Cruise is good. Are there better actors than him? Yes. But Cruise is in my top 10 I believe.
Must really kill him that his co-stars get all the Oscars and nominations for Oscars.
@@reptileguy8458 No one is better than Tom Cruise.
@@Vanessalein Lets not get crazy here...NO ONE BETTER than Tom Cruise? Lol Come on now...
@@reptileguy8458 He and Robert Downey Jr. are the best.
I love how he hip fires on the first guy since he already had his gun out but then takes his time to aim at the second guy since he was just clumsily fumbling around trying to get his gun out.
1:14 loved the quick draw here despite having a coat, reminds me of the duel in Once Upon a Time in The West where Harmonica keeps his jacket on while Frank took his off
I remember being 13 or 14 seeing this in the theater and being so shook by how real the sequence and gunfire seemed. This movie is so slept on.
Watch Heat (has the best action sequence ever made)
One of the most BA scenes ever made. The sound of the gun helped alot.
yeah michael mann's films always have realistic gun sounds, which made the shootout scene in heat all the better
@@Fr0st1989 I think they did the actual shooting on a firearms sound stage with Tom using the same weapon, then added them into the scene perfectly.
That was the only safe way to do it in a scene at this close, otherwise the blanks are too dangerous for the actors.
One of my favorite movies of all time. Absolutely love it.
Just another night of watching my favorite scenes from different movies.
Sooner or later you’re going to f••k with the wrong person.
Exactly
@John Johnson "i used to stack up fucks like you 5ft high use for a sand bag"
👍
It always catches up to you
6 shots was all it took, 3 apiece
And that's how you deal with scumbags
How every concealed carrier sees themselves.
I can watch this scene over and over.
Awesome scene!!
Perfectly executed box drill: 2 to the sternum, 1 to the brain box of each target. A thoroughly trained person performing this on two assailants could execute this perfectly without their pulse elevating (even to the smallest degree).
How every concealed carrier sees himself xD

Don't you just love how casually he shoots that greaseball after picking up his case? Good medicine for street crime.

Things are that bad in Australia? Where? No safe middle-class neighborhoods to move to?
Medicine?
More like a cure for street crime.
He already did the headshot on the other goon...was just letting the other guy writhe on the hook before he finished the job with him as well.
Bruh was still moving so needed another slug. Lol
To witness the almost casual final shot dispatching the thief like it was nothing more than an afterthought exemplifies the cold, calculated professionalism with which Vincent operates. They are an inconvenience to his plans and contract, so they need to be eliminated ASAP to resume normal operations. This was such an underrated movie for Tom Cruise.
The 1st time I watched this scene I was like, "HOLY JESUS!" 😳
This is why I LOVE Micheal Mann's work. So realistic and visceral.
He turns the whole city into a character it's pretty cool the music makes it even better
Then you get Miami Vice.
This is one of the most badass scenes in Cinema.
