That whole scene is just killer.
Absolutely one of my favorite movie scenes of all time

@@abcdef-kx2qt, yep, the two of 'em, those two scenes side by side at the top of movie history!
💯💥💥💥💥💥💥
This movie is a classic and a masterpiece to me, I felt everything he aimed for while watching it.
Actually there's a flip side that you'd agree with me on. This script was tossed all around until Michael Mann made it happen. Russell Crowe and Adam Sandler were supposed to be the original actors. Sandler would play the cab driver. It was a great film but the other cast would take the cake.
@@southbeachmiamiart895 that's gonna be a no from me dog.
Jamie foxx makes this Ridiculous movie watchable
Agreed really enjoy watching this movie.
I wonder what wacky modifications the cab would have had if Sandler had stayed on.
Wish mann would make a new film in the style of heat or collateral. . . need more of that gritty, dark LA crime story.
It looks as though he's developing a prequel to Heat
Mr Mann has created a publishing company, Michael Mann books..
The heat prequel is book 2, the book on le roux is book 1.
Also he is developing a movie on Paul Calder Le Roux
It will be amazing. Le Roux is a real life Bond villain..
I've read two books on Le Roux, fascinating stuff.

This IS Heat 2. Grey suits, 2 opposite forces, L.A w no stages etc..
#FACTS
100%. Love those (Miami Vice too, although not on the same level).
The evolution of max is truly facinating. He will never be the same again. Never seen cruise so bold and so cold. Mann is a perfectionist and you better be prepared for him.
Before John Wick - there was VINCENT
Heat & Collateral has the best gunshot sounds!!!
Miami vice has a couple of great about outs too.
Miami vice it's up there
There is a fascinating story about how the heat shooting track was recorded, you should google it. :)
Because They used real ammunition in this movie.
@@karagun5547 No ammos. Real blanks.
Vincent is ruthless commitment. But he's not a sociopath. I believe that's a common misreading of the character. He's capable of empathy, and just as capable of switching off that empathy.
Fascinating character, brilliant film.
@Late Bloomer Agreed
True
The devil can be charming
The thing that's fascinating about Vincent is how he has this explosive violence coiled up in him, and every time it comes out the universe just bends to his will. Except Max, Max in his odd little way is completely unphased and indeed it is this that lets him defeat Vincent.
Sociopaths are capable of the exact same thing. You're confusing psychological definitions
Watched this at least 700 times
3:55 I’m actually impressed that Michael Mann went on to create a full backstory for Vincent even with pictures! Makes the villain a more fascinating character.
Glad I caught this in the cinema in 2004. I think the days of having those popcorn experiences with movies that turn out to be classics are over.
Lucky you man , I was 1 years old in 2004 lmao
I know exactly what you mean. A very sad ending I must say. I don't see that popcorn experience will ever be close to the same =/
so true! i saw this in theaters and a week later saw the Village..
Mcu ruined it.
Tommy Wiseau might just be the one able to redeem Hollywood if he's willing to continue
looking at how Cruise's character shoots his gun...this is obviously a major influence on John Wick.
100% the one where he draws and shoots with his forward leg extended straight gun pulled out and pointed up with no wasted movement at all to literally draw and shoot that first guy in the alley in like 1/10 of a second John Wick def used that move several times. Say what you want about Tom Cruise but dude is an action beast.
The thing about Keanu is he doesn't have ferocity and anger in his face when he acts. Tom Cruise, he is a beast.
I need NEED more Michael Mann films ASAP! Such a distinctive style, oozes coolness without trying.
I KNOW! he's awaesome!
"Heat" (1995) 👍
Between “Ferrari” and “Tokyo Vice” I feel like we’re about to experience a Mannaissance
I’ve dabbled in the film industry for 7 years now. I’ve have some buddies who are local indie filmmakers and anytime I work with them or asked how to approach a scene I say, the same way Michael Mann would…him and David Fincher are my 2 favorite directors and I had the chance to work 1 on 1 with Fincher as a body double on Mindhunter.
His problem these days is he's either trying too hard or not trying at all. That said, his directors cut for Blackhat was pretty good. I have no fucking clue why he's not releasing it cus it's vastly superior to the cinematic cut.
I remember my dad telling me to watch this movie about a taxi driver who gives an assassin a ride throughout LA. As soon as the scene came up where Max called Vincent back over to give him a ride, I thought, “Oh no, Max almost got away.” Such a great movie.
The soundtrack of this movie was just awesome.
I downloaded the soundtrack on to my phone.
INCREDIBLE
How did Tom Cruise not get an Oscar for that performance?
The way he drew his firearm and his attitude. I only give this film a B+ because this script was tossed all around until Michael Mann made it happen; he should have had Russell Crowe and Adam Sandler who were supposed to be the original actors. Sandler would play the cab driver. It was a great film but the other cast would take the cake.
@@southbeachmiamiart895 this is a terrible take
Overall performance was great. Gun handling is novice at best. You are not going to make clumsy actor look like professional. However Hollywood is trying to spin it Cruise is a pretty clumsy person. All his physical stunts look weird for people in the know. Still love his movies - apart from Mission Impossible crap.
@@hagestad Jesus Christ another terrible take
@@impatrickt lol. Tom shooting might look pro for a novice or perhaps it's made that way for camera. But it's looking to me like half speed of what its actually like on real situations and 5 times slower than best at it. Again that all might be the way they actuality wanted it for movie to create drama.
If you haven't seen this movie, you have missed some of the most magnificent cinematography ever created!!!
Bland cinematography
@@jothishprabu8 in your opinion what do you think is the best cinematography
@Meta Man, I don't know much about the technical side of cinematography. Where I'm from it's totally underappreciated. Thanks for the insight.👍

This is probably one of my 10 favorite movies ever and I love Michael Mann. This is awesome just to see all the effort put into making such a great film.
My favourite crime movie of all time. Virtually perfect. 👍
once again mann has made the city the 3rd actor and its another masterpiece
How was Mann able to pull of such a vibrant looking film using digital when so many modern film makers can't escape that flat, dull look? As well as being an intriguing, kick ass thriller, it's one of the most beautiful looking films I can think of.
Because if you want digital to emulate the film look, it can, but film can’t emulate digital. Just look at Roger Deakins’ work, he shoots on digital.
David Fincher does it very good too on digital.
Mann also directed The Insider, Heat, and The Last of the Mohicans. Insane resume!
Michael Mann makes movies about goddamn fucking professionals. Thief, Heat and Collateral make sort of a spiritual trilogy.
I like how the coyote in the street looks at Vincent and a connection is made. As the coyote recognises him as a coyote in spirit. A scavenger.
And of course Yo homey is just a legendary scene.
I saw it as the coyote is stalking something inside the city streets, just as the cops are doing towards him and hes feeling the pressure
Would love to see a netflix series on Vincent before all this,The history of the character would be so cool to see
yep. Me too.
I’ll have a word with him
Just don't get basic and cast that girly boy Timothay Chalamooth(sp?). Get an earthy American kid actor who isn't the darling of Hollywood or NY
Agreed, but definitely not Netflix. HBO perhaps.
No. I like the mystery.
This is amazing. I love watching it because you can see the amount of people and work-ship that lies underneath movies of this quality. No CGI, great shots, great characters' development, outstanding direction and attention to detail, awesome writing with REAL action scenes that only a few films can achieve, amazing commitment from everyone and one more thing...
8:02 "As an assassin you must be ECONOMICAL in your moves 🤨"
Tom Cruise.
Well stated. I agree 100% 👏🏻
I agree but in fact there were a lot of cgi but it was used with such finesse and expertise it blends perfectly. Like David finchers zodiac, you cannot tell they used digital effects at all 😀
Jamie Fox repeating Vincents words as Vincent for the very first time is almost exactly halfway in the movie. And when he does you are very much still in the scene with him, where he is in the moment. But it also made you look forward and know that there was going to be an actual collision with the Vincent character, and not simply getting steamrolled by Vincent. Its actually quite rare to have such a clear concise "here we go" kind of moment in a thriller.
Watched it a few day ago because I came across a photo with gray Tom Cruise on the internet and I shocked how good the movie is and nobody talk about it.
Michael Mann is a legend, with all the garbage coming out now it's tough to see anyone or anything close to his movie quality.
If this movie had come out today, Tom Cruise gun training would have gone viral. The way Michael Mann directs the movie combined with Cruise's commitment to deliver the action is a delight to watch.
If only Michael Mann would make a prequel about the first 6 years of Vincent's career in the private sector.
That would be pretty cool.
This is one of my favorite movies from the 2000's.
Mann is the most underrated director of all time
Heat, The Insider and Collateral are three of my favourite movies ever.
2006 Miami Vice is right there as well...
Last of the Mohicans best film
Another great Mann film. Brings out the best in Tom Cruise and gives him his best acting performance.
I only now realized that the guy Vincent bumps in at the airport is Jason Statham
@Dimitar Belilov It is meant to be his character from The Transporter movies
@@thomaskilroy4573 It's something official?..
@Gabriel Swayze Director Michael Mann said so himself.
Top 5 Movies I've ever seen in 57yrs!
Michael Mann makes LA beautiful, memorable and interesting. Many parallels between Heat and Collateral.
This movie is phenomenal
Michael Mann always has the best soundtracks in his films.
Nah that wud be tarantino
No wonder Michael Mann wrote a prequel/sequel to Heat, the man has all of the background of his characters in his mind.
Tom Cruise is one of the most gifted, talented actors of our time
And Hollywood doesn't appreciate him the way his fans do.
The guy should have won at least 2 Academy Awards from this list:
Collateral
Born on the Fourth of July
Minority Report
The Last Samurai
Rock of Ages
Magnolia
The Firm
Far and Away
Honorable Mention:
Tropic Thunder
Risky Business
I don't think Hollywood was too flattered/ happy with Tom's character in Tropic Thunder. 😆 Nor any aspect of that comedy classic.
What about Jamie Foxx ???
Don't insult my guy by nit mentioning him ???
Im not even going to name all his projects. But Foxx does music as well ...
And he's damn good at that too.
Not taking anything away from Cruz but what else does your hero Tom do , besides act & Scientology ???
Im just saying...🤔
@@kendudagrea8484 Tom does all his own stunts he is incredible! And way better looking than fox will ever be!
Far and Away?
lol. You must be trolling. Especially as you didn’t mention Rain Man, which is probably the thing he most deserved to win for.
Interesting how HEAT opens up with a train incoming and Deniro steps out and at the end of Collateral the final shot is a train leaving the station with Tom Cruise in it
That is super cool
Same exact train station too
Brilliant film. One of Michael Mann's finest.
This was a fun reminder of the days Mark Ruffalo was considered " a great actor " and not an "Internet whiner & hulk".
mann's a legend
Collateral is such an excellent film. I love Michael Mann and he's underrated!
Underrated by who? Nobody who knows anything about the film industry has anything but the highest regard for Michael Mann's work.
@@ivanjulian2532 ok good for you
Hey homey is one of the best shooting scenes that I’ve ever seen the calmness and fluidity of the entire scene brilliantly played out and Tom Cruise is perfect for the part and I mean literally the best shooting scene in any movie that I’ve ever seen!
always loved Michael Mann's films- love his attention to detail, character building and technical development. His characters always inhabit the screen 100% .
for me....Michael Mann is easily my favourite filmmaker...Thief....The Last of the Mohicans...Heat....The Insider...Public Enemies and Collateral are movies that I revisit every few years and are riveting each time I watch them......the preparation of those 17 cabs in Collateral even done to the work that went into the cabs colour is amazing.....thank for uploading this
Agree with ya! The work he puts in for everyone’s back story and what he goes thru to make his movies authentic. He’s the only director or anyone for that matter that I’ll listen to his commentary during the movie
It's on the home video releases, isn't it?
One of my favorites if all time. Manhunter. Loved that movie. I’ll see anything Michael Mann makes.

I've seen this movie so much times, and this behind-the-scenes only makes it better
I truly feel that If Heath was still here,
Him and Mann would've already done something really cool.
Fun Fact: Jason Statham did his little cameo in the beginning of the movie for free.
He's such a big fan of M. Mann that he was super happy to appear even for this small scene and didn't ask to get paid.
One of the most underrated movies ever.
GAWD, I love this flick.... My top five
Not just character lore but the amount of detail he puts even into the sodium vapor street lights of LA, and how it adds to the look/feel of the movie is why Mann is one of the greats!
Tom Cruise’s best film by far. Shows what he can do and it’s a lot.
Still one of my favorites along with Heat!❤
16:54 - "When you are with somebody who truly does do this work in life, the answers you get aren't obvious."
do you think this is true about anyone who does what they do well?
@@bofetada6841 Mann's quote is stored in my brain differently than what he actually says. I add a little something to it: "the answers you get aren't obvious ... until you hear them".
That's how I like to interpret it. Once you hear an answer from someone who is truly good at what they do, you may be lucky enough to hear an answer that immediately and obviously changes your perspective. For example, if a race car driver says they don't watch the cars in front of them but instead they watch the horizon and everything slows down.
“Yo homie, that my briefcase?”
Wow. I’ve always loved Mann’s work, but never knew how precise and deep his directing is. I have a whole new appreciation for his vision and execution now.
And that shoot of the 2 robbers in 1.2 seconds or less is stunning!❤
Wow this was 2004... damn time flies.
Old man
Like or not Cruise you can't doubt of his commitment and love for his craft.
Love the look of Michael Mann's movies, he's a terrific director, really one of the best
My biggest loop hole is that they got Max's License ID. They could have called his boss, the boss would have said "Yeah its pretty weird there is someone else in the cab with him talking to me on the radio" or at LEAST said his Mom was calling every 10 mins, they call her and she says there was someone in the hospital with Max. Am I crazy?
Jamie Foxx and the jazz man also come out in Miami Vice.
TRUE MASTERPIECE 👌
this is such a great movie 'Cruise' should've won an Oscar here , should have been a 'heat' and 'collateral' cross over were Vincent is Neil's brother, were in 'heat' Neil says he has a brother somewhere which is Vincent.
Are they literally brothers? Who knows, but the two movies are connected in all sorts of ways, no doubt about it. Mann book ends the films with the same shot. Heat begins with a train entering a station, coming towards the camera and carrying the film's anti hero protagonist into the movie, so to speak. Collateral ends with a train leaving the very same station, moving away from the camera and the audience, carrying the (now dead) anti hero out of the movie. If that doesn't suggest the two movies are companion pieces, I don't know what does!
@@davidlean1060 good point there.
@@carlossilverio7325 I could go on. Heat ends with the anti hero dying at the end a LAX runway. Collateral starts with the sound of jet wheels touching down and the first thing we see in vincent stroling through LAX terminal. There's loads of other little details. Put it this way, whether they are literally brothers is debatable, but it's easy to see why those fan theories have sprung up.
So Mann is a "method director". Makes sense to have the director be with total overview and insight.
Anyway damn he has made some awesome movies
What a movie. One can actually learn some philosophy from it.
He presents that money in such a swagger way, always loved this movie.

Michael Mann absolutely nailed this one - and absolutely messed Miami Vice up.
Miami vice is a great movie. Very atmospheric.

This Mann Joint is STILL Miles ahead of the rest!!!
And without any FAKE ass CGI Kinetic Action HORSESH*T!!!
Appropriate that he runs into The transporter ( Jason Statham ) at the start of the film . Jamie Foxx , whom he meets moments later, is his transporter for the whole movie
Love this movie, but after learning how she treats her husband ffwded thru every Jada Pinkett Smith moment in this scene.
I always thought that Vincent missing Max in their shootout at the end was a plot flaw. After watching this and knowing now that Vincent was going through his transformation, I think it's reasonable to say that he intentionally missed Max and this was Vincent's attempt at redemption
Fantastic Underrated Film.
Thank you so much for uploading this! I'd recently watched this for the first time because I didn't know it was by Michael Mann, and my god, how good is it??! This and heat are in a genre all of their own.
Cool video!
Incredible movie... Unusually visually pleasing, intensely thrilling atmosphere, iconic action scenes.
Fantastic performances both in front of and behind the camera!
Loved this, one of my favorite movies and fascinating to watch all that goes into making it. A classic no doubt.
Such a small setting for a movie, given the size of Hollywood movies, but that intimacy makes it so focused. Love it.
The best one after The Heat. One of my favorites.
Gotta give Jamie Foxx credit too, he did well!!
Vincent. Same as his character in the Color of Money - what a great movie that is too!
Yeah man, I'm a big fan of the color of money and collateral. two unreal films that are enjoyable from beginning to end.
Fantastic movie, and such and excellent attention to detail. Tom Cruise's weapons handling was superb, especially the alley shootout. He actually flips the flap of his jacket with one hand to get a clean draw with the other. Amazing, you have to catch it on slo-mo. 🙂
The whole time watching this i was just hoping and wishing that jada would catch a stray round to the head lol
I need more Les Grossman!
