You are definitely stimulating my thinking. I am organizing Obsidian using the folders, hashtags, and the cross links. Tags act like a folder kind of. I don't drill down to sub folders, which i think you may be doing something like that here. Thanks for the video. I really appreciate your effort.

Thanks for this great video. Whenever one makes a link, a new page is created on the left side bar. This can be very confusing if someone wants to use that as an index. I think you provide an easy way to develop the structure.

I prefer to use folders in the same way as youâve described the IMF framework. Thereâs nothing youâve shown that you canât do with the folder structure already in the operating system. Obsidian enables you to browse through folders really well. This also has the advantage of being able to find your notes really easily when you donât have access to Obsidian, eg on your IPad.
Youâre exactly right - I find using notes a bit easier for myself than folders because I work very visually.

Iâm just getting started with Obsidian so your videos are a great resource! Does adding a link back to the index on each page mess up the knowledge graph? Or do you find that it isnât a problem?
You're welcome! I do not find it messes up the graph at all. I'm only linking back on pages that need to jump back to the index (mainly my sub-index and map of content pages). Individual permanent notes don't link back to the index.
Great video! Do you tend to keep everything in your root folder or do you have a folder structure alongside this?
In the past I tended to keep everything in the root folder. Now, I tend to sort them by specific types of notes. I have a broad Notes folder for everything I'm writing myself, a Readwise folder for synced notes, an Inbox folder for collecting new items, and a few other misc folders to segment kinds of content.
I'm a little confused. I thought the goal of the "Roam" like system is that you don't have to worry about how to organize your notes. I think you will like Dynalist (from the developer who made Obsidian) better if you prefer the hierarchy system.
Itâs not necessarily a structured hierarchy - itâs a way to sensibly navigate through notes based upon topic. You donât have to organize anything. Use the system the way that works for you though. Iâm just showing how Iâm using my system :)

I am a bit late here but I want to give my opinion for people seeing this comment after me. Basically what all these atomic note taking systems are trying to emulate is Luhmann's Zettelkasten that works on exactly the principle the commenter above mentioned - not pre ordering notes, not having strict hierarchies.
Luhmann also wrote about indexing cards and you can also see his structure on the digitalized versions of his Zettels. Indexing does not mean, however, that you keep a fixed structure in your head while reading or doing research. You do your research as unbiased as possible and let the connections make themselves in your system later on. If it happens that notes are connected you can then order them under the same index principle, which can for instance be overarching research questions like "Would it have been better for the economy as a whole to save Lehman in 2008?" and under that broad question you could use another guide like "The European perspective" and under that category you would then have all the zettels that connect together on this topic (and also to other topics outside this index) and that tell you, for instance, how the Lehman bust affected European economies. So it is not about making your THOUGHT hierarchical but rather allowing yourself for some structure after your thoughts moved freely into that structure.

Currently I have multiple vaults for different aspects of my life because in theory it seems that would give me a clearer synthesis of my thoughts (by topic) over the long haul. Does this method of organization give a clear/sectioned map on the back end, or will it essentially still look like a zettelkasten only web in the end? Thanks.
I'm not 100% clear on what's being asked, but this method doesn't link between vaults at all. There do tend to be clusters of notes that become more apparent when using some kind of an indexed framework though.

I created this same framework for Evernote tags more than 5 years ago, it works great, the only difficulty I faced in Evernote is to connect the notes, but now with Obsidian I found the solution. My difficulty: how to import my notes from Evernote into Obsidian?

I've watched a bunch of these obsidian videos to try get on my feet and honestly this was the best one I've seen so far. Step by step. one thing that I was left wondering though is you are creating all these MOCs but i'm unclear how a note is different to an MOC. like you have an MOC note thats like, agile systems but isn't that just an atomic level note? Whats the difference between an MOC and a note? I'll probably find the answer but that left me a bit confused is all. Nice work.

Basically, MOCs are notes that lead to other notes. They are either workspaces to flesh out an idea or a sort of 'table of contents' acting as a summation of ideas in your vault.
Is there an estimation for when we will have access to the WYSIWYG mode in obsidian??
It's on the developers' roadmap but no timeline is given.

however I can't figure out why you're giving 10/20/30/40⊠numbers to the main MOCs in the INDEX⊠?
It's mainly for ordering in the file explorer list. They're definitely not required!
I agree. I don't know why there is numbering like this. It seems overly structured.
Can you talk about the process of having to review the indexes because you suddenly figure out you've missed one very important one, and want to give it top index number? How will that affect every single reference you've already made to those first indexes you've defined?
It's pretty straightforward -- you can go into the page you need to change the name, then in the title bar, rename it. It will rename all the links to that page in the vault for you.
One more question: Does the numbering just help searching and linking? I.e., you can type 000 and immediately go to the Index rather than typing âIndex.â Otherwise, Iâm having trouble understanding why a numbering scheme is used. The problem that Iâm encountering is that if I put something as 020 now but in the future want something else to be 020, Iâd have to update a bunch of links.
Largely so, yes. I primarily use it for a quick reference. The beauty of it is you don't have to change the numbers if you need something higher numbered. You could put something at 015 if you wanted it above 020 so you don't have to change numbers.
hi can i ask how you can hover over a link and it shows them that link? when i do it, it seems to be not working besides my dataview links

Ah -- the index is simply a text file in your Obsidian vault that links to others. That's all :)

Have you try onenote and if yes can the same thing be done in one note, with tags and links and search bar?
I have not built this out in OneNote. There are some significant differences in how ON handles organization but it might be possible.
For my day job, I am using OneNote, and linking back and forth can be done. Tagging can also be done, but so far, I have a thorough dislike for the OneNote tagging functionality. I think the killer for me was when I found that tags I created on the desktop were not available in the web view, and therefore, I also could not see them on my phone (also running OneNote).
I haven't given up. OneNote is the tool I have to work with at work (can't just use whatever you want at my workplace). I think better skill around what notes I should be taking, and how I should use them will give me more clarity about how I should be trying to use OneNote (as well as Obsidian for my not at work life).
For now, I'm learning about PARA (which is sort of hierarchical, and fits the OneNote paradigm better). Using Indexes, you can do PARA in Obsidian too. My expectation is I will have at least three different structures happening in my Obsidian vault simultaneously. (Knowledge management, Project management and Creative Writing). We'll see. . .
why are they tens though? shouldnt the index start 001 002 003 will notes with those indexes even exist??
They're in tens because it's a bit easier to put something in the middle if, say, I want to organize it differently in the future. Maybe I want a full list of Maps of Content, but I don't want it on my main index. So that could likely be 005 MOC -- after 000 Index and 010
I feel like this method is the same concept as folders lol..
I don't really understand why the numbers used to label are 010, 020, 030, etc. instead of just 1, 2, 3, ... or 01, 02, 03, .... Great video tho
It's a nod back to the Dewey decimal system used in libraries. Also 010 sorts higher in the alphabetization of things.

@@EffectiveCo I get that it's a Dewey reference, I don't understand why people use it in Obsidian though. What problem is it solving? It looks like a solution looking for a problem to me. Could it be the result of somebody focusing too much on developing a system, rather than on simplicity?
No offence to anyone, but most people do not need this and overly complex systems involving numbering schemes will not be useful for most users. There is nothing wrong with broad categories of folders and then subfolders. Why most people need indexes and cross links is beyond me.
If I am doing a project, nothing is lost and everything is readily accessible when I use a few dedicated folders and subfolders.
Most people have simple lives and do not want complexity. They do not need complexity. But they are sold on the idea that these complex systems will magically change their lives. Sorry if I upset some of you; that is never my intention. Far too many ways to over complicated simple things.
