The thing I love about Die Hard is that when the drama begins, McClane still tries to be a normal cop and handle the situation as a police officer.
He encounters he attempts to subdue Tony but ultimately ends up killing him in a scuffle after falling down stairs.
When Marco finds him later, John tells him to get on the ground and drop his weapon but then gets ambushed by Heinrich and kills him.
He ironically doesn’t actually start blindly killing bad guys until Marco tells him “next time you have a chance to kill someone don’t hesitate”
An excellent essay that really explores why Die Hard is so great as opposed to just being a "memba that" thing. Bravo sir.
IMO, Die Hard 2's action structure is really underrated. Even though the hero is always on the offensive due to his wife's limited time, he ultimately loses every major action sequence in the film: one of the terrorists gets away from the baggage fight, the antenna array blows up in the skywalk shootout, Esperanza escapes from the runways, McClane's snowmobile is taken out in the high-speed chase, and he gets soundly beaten by Stuart on the wing of the plane. But then the turning point comes after he utters his famous catchphrase and finally ends the crisis once and for all. Simply among the most cathartic moments in action film history. Probably one of the reasons that Siskel & Ebert regard DH2 as the best in the franchise, even though I still rank the original above it.
I always thought this film was about a loser who dared to act as an American cowboy and won. It's surprisingly smart, dramatic, heartfelt and, well, pure fun to watch. Great video!
Die Hard is the best Christmas movie
ever
Was about to comment the same. Glad to see it being the first comment.
AMEN TO THAT!
Predicting the top comments: "Best Christmas movie ever"
EDIT: I made a bo-bo in the video. I said DC Dwayne instead of Al. I had a chunk of the old drafted script dedicated to him and must have fussed the 2 together and missed it in recording. Pfft. shit happens!
Best MOVIE ever. (Imo)
Can you please do Apocalypto. It's one of my favourite movies of all time. Please Ryan Please !!!!
Not since you pinned this one
He just gets it this guy is amazing
I love your eye for filmography. You give these films new life. You've made me watch these films again just to see in detail as you. Simply amazing videos sir.
This channel is part of a string of videos that are convincing me to go back and re-watch movies I was too young to appreciate fully. Thanks a lot for that, Ryan. Have a Merry Christmas!
Have a good time with your life. Catch ya in the new year.
I seen Die Hard once when I was super young. This makes me want to watch the movie with that insight and see how the experience of viewing this movie can be. Great video.
I agree with every single bit of what’s said in this video. Die Hard is just an amazing film!
Great Analysis, keep up the good work and happy holidays!
Excuse me, Home Alone 5: The Christmas Heist is the best Christmas movie ever
Excellent video to hiatus on, thanks as always and enjoy your holidays.
You need to analyze "Baby Driver". It had a lot of the same elements that I enjoy about Die Hard, and I love Die Hard. Greatest Christmas movie ever.
You make some serious quality content. Love it!
Merry Christmas and a happy new year Ryan!
Happy new year +RyanHollinger I love Jack Daniel's Honey as well
Thanks for a great video!
There's just something about Bruce Willis, he's so good at that thing he does. I can't hate on him, he's fucking solid.
yess thanks for reminding me to rewatch this movie!! great vid
I hate how people say Die Hard is a christmas movie. Its like saying Eyes Wide Shut it also a christmas movie. Just because it takes place during the holiday doesnt mean it is one.
I love how you used "Ode to Joy" in the beginning.
Love your analysis of this masterpiece of cinema.
Die hard was great because there was realism in it, you could believe that one guy could do this especially if they are a cop with training and have a lot of luck, making him vulnerable and not seemingly invincible, this helps the common man to relate with him, in later sequels when everything is over the top that relation to him is lost
Holy shit you deserve so much more views
Why don’t you have millions of subscribers yet?? Best channel on CZcams for me.
That was great
I love this film but the John wick films are honestly my favorite action movies though just something so sleek and sexy about them, the gun play is perfection
Ryan would you ever think of doing a video on "American Werewolf in London"? Happy Christmas :)
Best Christmas Movie Ever
Love the background music around 4min mark. Anyone know what it is?
RIP Alan. You were a God amongst men.
I love this movie.
Finally! You review a Christmas movie!
Gremlins.
Ryan Hollinger D'oh!
Ah, my favorite Christmas movie.
I think the last 2 Star Wars sequels could have really used some of the things discussed in this.
I personally was never able to grow an attachment with the main character because of her, practically, flawlessness.
WONDERFUL video essay, no homo
Old boy 2003 also did this very well implamenting the characters weakness
Never noticed before but is that a poster of a nude woman in the background at 6:54
I saw that wonder how long before this video is pulled.
I love that I was just watching this movie like 10 minutes before checking youtube lol
I would absolutely love a more in depth, detailed review of the die hard movies.... The only three that really matter, anyways. Another great video, I just wish your vids were longer. Lol.
7 hours and 0 dislikes. Good job. 👌
Alan Richtman as Hans Gruber is a goddam model of a man for me. Be thorough, be cunning, but be polite.
I've never known what maclane says in the vent, what does he say?
Best movie of all time for me.
Can you do the art of killer klown from outer space
I could not agree more about the modern films staying in their comfortable box.
Alan Rickman's first movie role.
R.I.P. Theo
Have u seen Jeremy Salunier's Blue Ruin it's the extreme of ur protagonist sucks in action movie Genre
Whats happening with the new die hard film? Anyone? ..
Do Unbreakable please
I never understood how doing something AFTER your flight helps you not be afraid of the flight...
Paul Blart
If you think about it, Mclaine is more an anti-hero than a hero. He’s just got in that situation, saving his wife and doesn't care about anybody
hey! wheres the kraken bottle?
Yup. While I love the action choreography in the Wick frachise it is flawed because a) The story is paper thin; and b) the guy is overpowered and nearly invincible.
Okay, real talk: What's with you and Jack? I personally have always preferred Jim, or even Ezra. I guess I can understand you liking honey and all, but Jim has that and more, try Jim's Red Stag Black Cherry flavor some time.
Man, hope you have a good break
Diehard is awesome!
John Wick IS a really good movie.
Die Hard is the 2nd Best Christmas movie ever made, bested only by Black Christmas.
STREET SMARTS
Die Hard is the best Christmas movie for our time because it features a man besieged, on the one hand, by criminal scum, and on the other hand by hollow bug men: scheming FBI agents, a cretinous deputy police chief, and parasitic journalists. John McClane places honor and action above justice, when justice is administrated by cowards and bureaucrats.
Journos spend the movie trying to control and profit from the story rather than report truthfully, and even cultivate sympathy for the enemy. It's the perfect depiction of journos in our time and it ends with one being punched deservedly in the face for endangering McClane family.
McClane isn't a typical action hero. He is a self described bum, not Schwarzenegger/ Stallone, has a receding hairline and a failing marriage. He is just a creature of instinct with a healthy anger and a powerful sense of right and wrong and won't quit.
McClane is also in a way an artifact, a model of the old male. His wife is a lib. McClane tries but cannot really accommodate her rootless careerist lifestyle. She even employs illegal alien as nanny, which endangers her children and McClane when journos find out and exploit!
McClane is in this position because of his careerist wife, who chose a cosmopolitan career in international finance. Look at the people employed by Nakatomi: cokehead Ellis, the man who kisses McClane on the cheek when he arrives at the party ("Jesus, f***ing California")
for me personally, this is why movies were "better" in the old days. Die Hard wasn't trying to be anything, it was just a really good script executed in a really great way, that's why it worked so good in the first place, as you said here in your analysis, it never contradicts itself, it follows the characters whithin the world they're set in, and following McClane we learn that this is serious and dangerous, but we're just along for the ride. love your channel, love tour videos, keep'em coming! :) PS: LOVED your analysis of Ace Ventura!
RIP Alan Rickman
I had a rather frustrating argument with a colleague about Die Hard, i should say straight off the bat, she has dreadful taste in films generally!
She thinks all 5 Die Hard films are as good as one another, and she likes them all equally.. It's crazy.
Seeing your hero bleed is incredibly important..
This is something which the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Die Hard films were so lacking in!
As the films went on, they went for a more "how insane can this get" vibe. I can totally see it work for some because the 2-4 aren't all that bad as more generic action movies (I know a lot of folks love the trilogy as an entire package).
To be fair, 2 and 3 were generic action movies slapped with the Die Hard label. McClane was beaten up badly in both of those, but the problem is that he was also invincible for some reason.
I HATE you! How dare you compel me to re-watch a brilliant, timeless action movie? Do you reckon yourself some kind of 'Review God!'?
The denizens of the 'bizarrely crass and unbelievably bland blockbuster' WILL PREVAIL!
My god, you seem to always drink my favorite types of alcohol
die hard is NOT a christmas movie as many argue. christmas is die hard holiday. christmas celibates st John mclane saving us from the twelve terrorists of christmas. John 12:25 oh thy weathereth outside is frighful, but thy fire inside so delightfuleth.... it took a millennial to make me realize this
also there are only 3 die hard movies
do u have an onlyfans
Why do you keep calling him "Gruber"? His name is Prof. Snape.
First!!,,, Dislike that is. Teeheehee. Sorry I️ had to. I’ll switch I️t to a like of course. I️ just had to be that guy for a sec.
"I shot a kid. He was 13 years old. Oh, it was dark, I couldn't see him. He had a ray gun, looked real enough. " That cop gets way to much love
didn't even have the thundergun smh
HypnoChode
What are you implying here? The kid being shot is a tragedy that completely changes Al's life and outlook. He can't even use his gun anymore for the majority of the movie.
When he says "looked real enough", he's not saying that the gun looked real enough that he could lie about thinking it was legit and get away with it; He was saying that he saw a figure in the dark with a gun, and it haunts him to this day.
Not a Christmas movie, though.
BEST.
CHRISTMAS.
MOVIE.
EVER.
? Why not ?
It's the best Christmas movie though....
Doesn't really seem like it hinges too much on being Christmas thematically, it just happens to take place on that day. Saying it is a Christmas movie seems like its some dumb in-meme. I'd like to actually try my hand at making a movie that is actually both good and undeniably about Christmas one of these days.
HyperThermal
>They hang the German guy like an ornament.
>"Welcome to the party!, pal!" What kind of party?, a Christmas party, of course.
>Plenty of Christmas music.
>John is practically Santa Claus; he even says Ho-Ho-Ho, showing it's better to give (dead terrorists) than receive.
