Die Hard changed action movies forever and made Bruce Willis’s John McClane into one of the most iconic characters in movie history. The film is an absolute classic, but it definitely does raise some questions. Like what's up with Hans Gruber’s cronies having such beautiful hair? Why doesn't anybody shoot each other when they have the chance? What's up with the awkward foot stuff? Why does Nakatomi Plaza host their party on Christmas Eve?
To answer all these questions and more, step inside the pitch meeting that led to Die Hard! It’s super easy, barely an inconvenience!

"Because that's what I wrote."
"Fair enough."
Okay then.
When that is said we "Need to get of my back", I mean his.

@@groverjuicy I haven't, no
Hence a white Christmas.
@@SeraphsWitness Eh, maybe, but in Die Hard the whole movie is set at that time with those tones. Harry Potter only ever has a few scenes set at Christmas time. It's a bit more of a stretch than Die Hard or Gremlins.
"Die hard". First used in 1811 in the peninsula war. During the battle of Albuera Lieutenant-Colonel inglis was wounded by canister shot. Despite his injuries, Inglis refused to retire from the battle but remained with the regimental colours, encouraging his men with the words "Die hard 57th, die hard!" as they came under intense pressure from a French attack. The 'Die Hards' subsequently became the West Middlesex’s regimental nickname."
I really do appreciate a bit of history now and then, especially from someone who seems to have done his (her?) homework.
Yeah, I think they pretty much missed the point of the entire movie.
I thought the screen writer couldn't think of a movie name until he looked under the hood of his car and saw a Die Hard battery. That battery company should sue.
That sounds incredibly implausible - derivations from unverifiable utterances are very rare indeed, not least because the originator cited in Wikipedia from which you lifted this is an undistinguished officer carrying a workaday injury in a humdrum battle. Besides, these sentimental gleanings tend to be more frequently derived from American military folk tales, eg 54 40 or fight (yuk).
The older phrase is "old habits die hard": almost literally, it is difficult to give up an ingrained habit held for a long time. Here's a better citation.
According to Gregory Titleman's America's Popular Proverbs and Sayings, this expression has been traced back to 1450, but it does provide references to this earlier use and we were unable to find any verification online. The first known citation in the USA is in an article by Benjamin Franklin printed in London Chronicle in December 1758.
The noun die-hard, meaning a person who vigorously resists changes, is extrapolated from this proverb.

I love watching the evolution of these two characters. If you watch an early episode and then a recent one, you can see the difference in enthusiasm. Seriously awesome to see the development here.
There's more character development in this serie, than in almost all characters in movies today.
Seeing character development in series is tight!
I also think that in the current ones he goes a bit more in depth. For example, if it was done today he would likely question that Al as a desk jockey has a marked police car for driving to and from work, or that he says he hasn't been able to fire his gun in years but LAPD requires firearm qualification every 6 months.
I think the difference is just that ryan is more comfortable on camera now and his comedy/acting skills have naturally gotten better along with his charisma

@@awfulbill9283 they were tight until they were stretched. Now they're supe easy.
@@DummyAccount yeah. But what ya gonna do?
In reference to the "Now I have a machine gun" bit, it's one of the really odd changes they made from the book. In the book it's,"Now *we* have a machinegun" because McClaine was trying to make Hans think there was more than one guy in the building roaming around.
Interesting, but unless we see John talking this over with himself in one of his classic talks-to-himself scenes, I don't think it would be very apparent why the message would read "we" and audiences would just be confused. If we do see him explaining it to himself for the benefit of an audience, it would lose its impact when we first see the message simultaneous to Hans reading it.
When adapting any piece of work, always do what's best for the new medium.
@@FlatOnHisFace IMO it's also better for the film that the bad guys know there's only one guy. Their disbelief and irritation with McClane being a "fly in the ointment" wouldn't be as effective otherwise.
