    Stephen Colbert took over as host of The Late Show on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015. Colbert is best known for his work as a television host, writer, actor, and producer, and best known for his charity work teaching English as a second language on Tunisian date farms. Prior to joining the CBS family -- and being officially adopted by network president Les Moonves -- Colbert helmed “The Colbert Report,” which aired nearly 1,500 episodes and required Stephen to wear nearly 1,500 different neckties. The program received two Peabody Awards, two Grammy Awards, and several unwelcome shoulder massages. It won two Emmys for Outstanding Variety Series in 2013 and 2014, both of which appear to have been lost in the move. Colbert is pronounced koʊlˈbɛər, according to Wikipedia. His understudy is William Cavanaugh, who will be hosting The Late Show approximately one third of the time. Good luck, Bill!"

      I'm planning on going to drama school in the London or Scotland ( the one where James went to) the problem is despite being British and European I live in SA so I'm classifed as an international student so I get charged double what UK and EU citizens pay whic is problematic because they're all expensive because our exchange rate is in the gutter and then there's also the cost of living. I'm doing law currently at a private insitute which is the most expensive place you can do it and basically one year a drama school is equivalent to 5 years here.

      He's from Glasgow. The class system in general is quite apparent there so he'll know more than most what a struggle it is if you don't come from a privileged family. If you are working class you are expected to get a steady job with a steady wage, and that's the be all and end all of it. The arts are seen as a waste of time, not becasue they aren't appreciated, but there's almost no way to support yourself. If you come from a rich family you can explore anything you want and never go hungry or homeless. I think everyone should be afforded that same privilege.

      - There is a class bias in the British acting community
      - It is due to a lack of arts education in public education.
      - Arts education is important because it allows students to see beyond their own immediate surroundings. It explains McAvoy's success.

    • @monkeymox2544
      @monkeymox2544 Před 5 lety +3

      Yep same here, I was interested in drama but we didn't have a proper drama teacher for most of the first three years of high school, it was basically a free period, the school just didn't take it seriously. When it finally came time to choose my GCSEs, it was like "hmm, do I choose drama, a subject I'm potentially interested in but with no way of knowing if I'll be any good at it, or do I choose an academic subject which I know I'm good at? Business studies and history it is, then..."
      To be fair we had some good art teachers, and they did encourage some real creativity - we had a large gallery area which showcased students work. But for some reason the focus at our school was on humanities and sports. That was in the early 2000s anyway, I doubt the academies put much focus on art at all any more.

    Starting out as an actor is very hard, with years of traveling to hundreds of auditions but only getting a few small parts and being very poor. I think a big part of the class ceiling is that those with rich parents can help support them financially during this time. Whilst those from poorer backgrounds can not afford to support themselves. Thus settle for a 'normal' job.

    • @Qwistie_
      @Qwistie_ Před 8 lety +15

      Very true, money does have importance with access to such facilities and equipment to get a decent career in the arts. A person struggling with money and acquiring all that will find it usually difficult to attain the same skills to another who has that more. Add to that a family who might not be able to support their career because the stigma that it doesn't make enough money to live, many people do not want to support the arts at schools. You can't be successful just with shear willpower, it does take some support, (mentally and physically), and that's why many give up. A rich kid has a lot more of that than someone growing up in the streets. We all can be creative, but only the few actually want to make a living out of it, and I think that's sad.

He told a story on British radio once how the boys wore a very distinctive uniform and for years were expected to wear it all the time, even nipping down to town. But during his years at the school, that rule was lifted because the uniform made the little rich boys and easy target to get mugged...there was even a thing where if people saw a boy in the Harrow uniform at an ATM, they'd mark his dark jacket with chalk to signal that he'd just withdrawn some cash.

    James isn't your average actor; he says what he wants, stands by his points, bases his understanding in researched facts or personal experiences and remains polite to the marginality. I respect someone who has the strength to be open in our modern world where everyone takes offence, especially when it is on a topic meant to raise awareness on the flaws of society or politics and so on. To share the valuable life lessons he reaped from such experiences, we are much more inclined to follow our interests and live a much more fulfilling life than become zombies. Who cares about the risk of money or failure when the alternative wastes our potential and condemns us to boredom and misery. You can only succeed if you try.

    It's a big problem in England, not just in the acting business. Imagine places like phillips exeter an phillips academy but 1000x MORE elitist. Not only that, but there are a lot of them and fewer top quality colleges, meaning every elite college is disproportionately filled with people who basically still think of themselves as nobility. You think the rich and powerful are overrepresented in the Ivy League schools? It's way worse at Oxford and Cambridge. And it's a lot of pressure on the kids, too. I grew up in a Posh family and felt like my family would disown me if I didn't go to Balliol.

    • @WALZ97
      @WALZ97 Před 8 lety +22

      Yeah agree 100%, ive been to posh schools and public ones, it really does show that in the posh schools, the kids from the elite family just lay back and they know their life is sorted because of all the opportunities theyll get. Working class kids have to work much much harder to get these same opportunities, it definitely is a problem in most career paths.

      It's not like it's impossible to move up. I come from a poor family, first to go to university, get a scholarship, and get a training contract with a prestigious law firm. As long as you have the brains, there's no limit to what you can achieve. You seem to conveniently overlook the success stories. Which overwhelmingly make up the majority.
      The fact is there is nothing stopping someone with the potential to rise to the top. And that's about right to me.

    A good example of the "class ceiling" is Game of thrones with exception to a few (Maisie Williams, Rory Mccan, Alfie Allen etc) majority of the leading and supporting actors are from private schools... Rose leslie grew up in a CASTLE in Aberdeen her family is a noble family and her father is the Chieftain of Clan leslie. I'm sure there are there are other shows that mainly cast actors from wealthier schools

Her mother got sick of living in the castle (ha!) because the weather in Aberdeen is awful so she and her mother moved to Paris for 3 years and she attended an English school... Her accent gives Prince Harry a run for his money lol

    Just for reference to our american friends. A year at eton will cost £75,000-£90,000. That's $100,000-$120,000 for just 1 year at school. They usually do 10 years there i think. So that's 1 million dollars to educate your child before they even go to oxford or cambridge. That's how elite these schools are and why people think it's a problem. Personally i like those actors and think they're all really talented. But you can understand why it might upset people.

    some really good points made! art is important! it's not about whether not everyone loving art fanatically... it's not about whether everyone wanting to become or being physically involved in art and promoting art.. it's about being informed about art and being exposed to it. Art can increase the quality of life and expand someone's point of view. 110% agree with James McAvoy. There are so many schools that undermine the value of art and keep cutting funding on it because it's 'not as important'. Just as someone needs to do math, science, or english... they need art too!

    Hey James, can i share a story with you? One day I was driving home, when all of a sudden the Lord came to me in spirit. I felt very close to Him. I knew if I asked him to play any song on the radio he would, I guess to bless my faith.
    So I said "ok, Lord play "Come as you are by Nirvana".
    I turned on the radio and the song started playing right there on the spot, perfectly…
    I started getting flooded with chills like a waterfall, crying, and trembling.
    He stayed with me for 10 minutes in my driveway. until I got outta the car.
    A couple months after that I started getting amazing prayers answered way more often, because it helped me quit doubting when I pray and I was lined up with biblical instructions. It's 6 years later and I still get answered prayers in Jesus name.
