- Let's look past the marketing to find the real differences (and similarities) between toothpastes.
A dentist's guide for how to find out what ingredients are in toothpastes and which ones you should be looking out for. What are the differences between the different kinds of fluoride? What is potassium nitrate and why might you want it in your toothpaste? Does whitening toothpaste actually do anything?

This is exactly what I have been looking for as I’ve been researching toothpaste for the last hour. So informative, thanks!!
I have watched so many videos related to this topic but your videos is so informative, the way you explained things was so gentle. I would definitely share your video with others.
Thank you very much for this. I'm from the UK and what you have just explained to me on your video has made so much more sense to what dentists here in the UK have told me over the years ( i'm 46yr old ). Thanks again.
This was a fantastic video! Thank you so much. Also the editing and
visual aids added perfectly to your well-metered speech.
Thank you so much!
This was very informative. I am a toothpaste fanatic, can never have enough. I just feel that I don't have the right one every time. But now I know what to look out for.. Thanks Doc..
Wow great video, very informative and great use of pictures/charts/examples. I’m ready to tackle the toothpaste aisle like a pro!

Important information passed on with so much subtleness and without any jazz.... Thank you doctor. This was really helpful. 😊
Solid info on here!!! I always wanted to know what the difference was in the types of flouride
Great information Doc it was very helpful, thanks for sharing the video. Hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday season. Take care, Joe
watched multiple videos and this was by far the most helpful. thanks for simplifying this very confusing topic
Wow this was a fantastic breakdown and accurate portrayal of the toothpaste aisle!
Honestly thank you. I needed more toothpaste as I was running out and went out and specifically got Stannous Fluoride toothpaste.
have you heard about the microsilver tothpaste?
This is the best video on toothpaste on the entire youtube!! Thank you so much!!!
Your amazing love the feedback and u helped me reassure my pick of toothpaste was the best!!!!
*Thank u so much Doc! I wish your channel was recognized more.* 😄
I needed this sooo bad!!! Thank you for this amazing video
Thanks so much. This the most useful video about toothpaste I have ever come across. Subscribed.
Mate, that was a great video. I really appreciate it. Cheers
I live in the UK and I find many tooth pastes, especially whitening ones, give me sore dry chapped lips. My skin must be sensitive to a particular ingredient and when I brush I usually get alot of toothpaste foam around my lips. So I had to be really careful about which brand and which type I choose. Currently I find Colgate Sensitive with Sensifoam works brilliantly. No bad reaction. But some of the other Sensitive pastes from Colgate do react with my skin. I just hope this product remains available.
I LOVE this video.
I do have a question about not using any toothpaste at all. There's a doctor who doesn't use any toothpaste at all as brushing without toothpaste is just as effective. How would someone even keep their mouth from bad odors that way?
(P.S: Your voice is extremely soothing.)
Excellent video, very well organized. Thank you!
Love this explanation. I always tell my husband there is no difference between that $7 dollar tube of Sodium Fluoride toothpaste and the $2 one from Colgate. It’s all in the marketing.
One other thing I would consider too, is taste! I use pepsodent (or aim if I can’t find it,) because the taste is pleasant. I always follow up with a mouthwash as well.
Great video. A lot of very good information regarding the different types and uses of toothpastes.
This was really helpful! Thank you so much!
Great video! Big help. Thanks a lot Doc! 👍🏾
Always been a Colgate fan! Really love a product that cleans my teeth well, just like the Oclean Flow!
Best video on this topic you can find. Thank you 🙏
Just subscribed and looking forward to your videos on fluoride free toothpaste and whether that's a good choice for dental health. Thanks so much for your concise video!
What a great and insightful video👌🏽may God bless you man
Dr. You explained so easy to understand!
Thank you Dr. Tyler! This was very informative, entertaining (meaning I payed attention and didn’t get bored at all!) and extremely helpful.
I learned a lot and thank you for adding the examples of toothpaste we can use.
Thank you once again!
you're so welcome! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for taking the time to make such an amazing video. We all truly appreciate it.
I so appreciate the beginning warning/ awareness! Lol makes me trust you much more. More ppl should say that even tho it should be obvious
This was so Helpful. Thank You!
Exactly what I'm looking for. Thank you so much.
From experience, I totally agree with going to the dentist and having a dental hygienist clean and polish your teeth to remove any stains. During your visit ask the dentist or hygienist what you can do to prevent the staining. Maybe you need to stop or cut down on drinking dark soft drinks or coffee with cream and sugar. They might even say you can continue to drink and eat as before but you need to brush differently or with a different type of brush or toothpaste. I was getting stains on the inside of my bottom front 4 teeth (the 4 between the canines) from drinking coffee with cream and sugar. I was able to continue drinking coffee with cream and sugar but I needed to brush my teeth 20 to 30 minutes after I was done drinking and if for some reason I wasn't able to brush them, I was told to rinse and swoosh my mouth with warm water immediately after I was done drinking my coffe to help dissolve and spit out the remaining sugar in my mouth. Both the brushing and rinsing with warm water took care of the issue.
I would avoid using whitening toothpaste, but if you decide to use it, only use it for a week or two. If the stain doesn't go away during this time, discontinue using it and go see a dental hygienist. Whitening toothpaste will wear away your enamel after using it for a long time. If you wear away your enamel, you will have yellowish/brown teeth. Not a good look.
Really needed this, now I'll just do my research about toothpaste brands. Since this is my next step after actually finding the best electric toothbrush, the Oclean Flow.
Clear, concise and informative. Thank you :)
Best video on the topic. Thank you!
This is the information that I was looking for. Simple and best
From the first second into the video, I thought this doc's so humble
Really glad I found this! I'll go with Crest for now. Finding the perfect toothpaste is the next step since I have already found the best e-toothbrush. Which the Oclean Flow btw!
Crest cause teeth sensitivity and gum bleeding
Simple and sweet, thank you!
Excellent video on preventive gum care!
Seriously doctor, thank you you break it for us in a simple way.

Great vídeo ! Really really helpful !!! Do you have any social media where you share more things like that ? Thank you very much Dr. Tyler
great clarity of thought on your video. pl post more such videos. Also if you can give some education advice that will be great
Your video is really informative, I guess I'll continue using Synsodyne along with my Oclean Flow! Made my teeth whiter and fresher so I guess its good.
Thank you so much! Great video! Super useful!
I don’t know what to say, but, thank you very much. Love you doc.
Dang, doc. That is the best explanation I’ve gotten on toothpaste. Thank you.
I currently have braces so I’m looking for what would be the best for my teeth. Love the straight to the point but thorough explanation. 🙏 thank you
Thank you Dr, crystal clear, what do you think of super high fluoride 5000ppm toothpaste like duraphat?
Excellent video, wish we had more content like this:)
Thank you so much for the info.
This is so helpful, thank you so so much!
Terrific Advice! Can't wait for the next video!
This is a great video. Thanks!
Beautifully explained
Excellent presentation!
This video and the charcoal video I found very helpful! Thank you! I’m curious about mouthwashes... I know you said whitening toothpaste is just more abrasive but what about whitening rinse? Say I use crest strips to whitening my teeth, what would you suggest in between for surface stains? A rinse or toothpaste?
White Strips work pretty well. They have the same active ingredient that some "professional" whitening gels have, just at a lower percentage, so they might work a little slower. Toothpaste might work on the stain between your teeth, but that might be tartar, which will need to be scraped by a hygienist. I don't think the mouthwashes do anything. They have some peroxide in them, but probably too low a dose to actually be effective
Always use warm slat water over any mouthwash, they never have the same benefits as something like warm salt water
Very informative. Thank you. Most toothpaste does not say where made. Why is that?
Thank you for your time!
Thank you just a young boy trying to find out which is the best toothpaste
Same but minus the boy part 😭😭
Great information! Thank you!
So helpful thanks you soooo much I really appreciate this!❤❤❤
I wish that I had such an attractive dentist. Thank you for the information.
I love this teaching. Thanks for it😊
excellent, excellent video! thank you so much
This was great! Thanks!
Thank you, Dr Tyler!
Great information. My toothpaste contains Aminfluoride. What is that?
Thank you so much for the help!
Thank you for this great video!
Unless you drink alot of coffee, black tea, or red wine, you typically don't develop enough stain to need a whitening toothpaste, as most toothpastes are capable of removing small amounts of surface stain.
Originally, this style of toothpaste was marketed towards smokers and coffee drinkers. Topol was the first big one in the US that I remember back in the 80's, but Rembrandt was the first one that started the whitening fad. Probably because Topol had a reputation of being very abrasive, whereas Rebrandt was alot milder.
Great video. You just didn't really explain what does potassium nitrate do though you emphasised it's on its own category for sensitive teeth. Does it have an actual added health benefit for the teeth? Or does it just symptomatically treat sensitive teeth?
Definitely a good start but I’m really looking for a toothpaste with mild flavor. I find most toothpaste I get has such a strong flavor if I do it before bed i stay up late, like right now.
You’re not alone. There are lots of people that don’t like the standard minty taste. I’d recommend the Twice brand’s Calming Vanilla Lavender. I haven’t used it personally, but I’ve heard good things
Can you do a video on good teeth whitening methods.
Wow thank you for sharing this wealth of information
Great video , thank you !
Brilliant information thankyou. I have composite bonding front top teeth what toothpaste shud I use please ? X
Great video, thank you 🙏
Thank you so much
I’ve used Complete Care by Arm & Hammer for 5 plus years now. No issues. Has baking soda.
Wish I found this an hour or two ago. Just wasted a bunch of time looking at a ton of different toothpaste ingredients to come up with a similar conclusion. Once my Stannous Flouride Whitening toothpaste supply runs out, then I'm going non-whitening as the video suggests. Crest whitestrips did more to whiten my teeth in 3 weeks than a near lifetime of whitening toothpaste did any way.
What are your views on ingredients like Triclosan or Zinc? In Canada at least, Colgate Total's formula had to be changed to include a Zinc compound instead of Triclosan - for the function of additional anti-bacterial properties. I am curious as to whether one or the other has more anti-bacterial effect.
@MRK it really does matter which toothpaste u use. i statred using non flouride Ayurvedic auromere toothpaste and my upper and lower teeth are super sensitive now,...
Thank you!
Awesome. I learned a lot.
That's help a lot thank you so much
better video that all the home 'experts' thanks doc
¡Qué bien habla y que sonrisa más bonita!😍
You've simplified things so much better but which u can do other forms of tooth paste like natural, charcoal and diy toothpastes that uses lemon juice, baking soda and apple cider vinegar as homemade ingredients.
It's like you've been reading my to do list!. I've don'e a video on Charcoal - check my other videos. I've been working on one about natural toothpaste. Hopefully I'll get around to finishing that one soon
Hey, what is your opinion on toothpastes that contain baking soda, like the brand Arm & Hammer?
Thank you doc
What is the best toothpaste what would you recommend plus also my sister has sensitive teeth
