    I mean… the “gay army” thing is why Greek and Roman society - specifically Spartans - actively encouraged romantic* relationships between soldiers. Strong bonds means that not only will you fight harder to keep your paramour alive, but you’re also less likely to abandon the army in the middle of combat.

    • @jamescarrino3696
      @jamescarrino3696 Před rokem +16

      It's not a good idea in the context of a battle. Fighting a battle is almost never about just killing the enemy, but about completing an objective. While obviously not good if a squad suffers high casualties, the most important part is that objective (move to this spot, recover this Intel, capture this location, destroy X thing) is completed.
      Forming bonds with your fellow infantry is important, but the mission always comes first. So if your brother/lover gets shot in an area that would be extremely difficult to get him out of, tossing caution to the wind to recover him would just mean another guy shot. Think the sniper scene from Full Metal Jacket, and they weren't even buttfucking and spreading STIs while on rest. Hell, any conjugation in the military isn't a great idea because fun times with the hookers are great until half of your battalion has the clap and has to go on medical leave.
      The gay warrior thing is a romantic concept (no pun intended), but very flawed in execution. Not saying gay guys shouldn't be in the military, but there's a reason why they stay battle buddies.

    • @mattuwu9978
      @mattuwu9978 Před rokem +32

      @@jamescarrino3696 I get what you’re saying, but we can’t compare ancient battle tactics to modern battle tactics.
      Large armies were much more scattered and didn’t have a single, state-sanctioned, unified “goal” or mission like contemporary armies do. For example, the Sacking of Rome in 1527. Multiple soldiers from a variety of cities fought under the Duke of Bourbon for vastly different reasons. The German _Landsknecht_ were simply hired mercenaries. Soldiers from Genoa and Milan fought to prevent further sanctions on trade established by the Vatican. Spanish _Tercios_ were there under the order of Charles V. Followers of Martin Luther fought to dethrone Pope Clement VII. The vast majority, including the _Landsknecht_ and the _Tercios,_ simply wanted to pillage some gold. All of these groups wanted different things out of the Sacking, and when Bourbon died before he even scaled the wall, they continued on to complete their own personal “missions”.
      I’m sorry if this is a little scattered. I have COVID right now so my brain is very foggy. I hope what I said makes sense tho.

    The Sword in the Stone’s name is Caliburn, and in order to prove his worthiness Arthur pulled the sword out of the stone and anvil, and then put it back into the solid rock and metal 3 times.
    The did not receive Excalibur till he went on a quest looking for it after losing his first confrontation with the Black Knight.
    The Lady of the Lake gives Arthur both Excalibur and it’s sheath to Arthur as a gift after he proves his worthiness. Excalibur is perfectly balanced, totally unbreakable, and far lighter than it appears as to give its wielder an advantage of increased mobility in a fight.
    Merlin makes a point of pointing out however (following the battle in which Arthur defeats the Black Knight), that the sheath is FAR more powerful than the actual sword Excalibur, as it renders the user completely invulnerable to all harm, (Basically giving them total invincibility).
    Everything in this comment is described exactly as in the original text of King Arthur and His Knights.

    2) Don’t be a Watcher.
    After throwing the grenade, you’re supposed to take cover immediately. If you don’t, you’re labeled as a Watcher (they will put a W on your helmet) to alert your squad/platoon that yes, this guy could accidentally kill himself, so tackle him out of the way if he Watches the grenade.

Same reasons why Soviets went from 7.62x54mmR to first 7.62x39mm and then the faster 5.45x39mm, it was enough for the distances where most fighting happened, and was significantly easier to control and lug around.

    I’m from Singapore - basically *everybody* here reverse parks, and you’re taught to do that in driving school. The rationale given is pretty much that it’s safer to do so - when you reverse into a spot, you pretty much know that the area’s clear since you’ve just driven to that spot and everyone can see that you’re backing into a spot to take it. But if you park head in and reverse out, you don’t exactly know that there aren’t any cars nearby (since it’ll always take a while for you to get seated and get ready to leave). Sound gets quieter as a function of the distance cubed, so if your shot is 100x louder, that means that you could hear it 4-5 times further away. No, the pillow doesn't "silence" the shot like it does in a movie, but it really significantly reduces the area over which it could be heard.

    suppressors do reduce the noise a firearm makes as it discharges, but what they don't do is reduce the supersonic crack the bullet makes as it flies through the air (which is where most of a guns noise actually comes from). you can buy subsonic ammo and using it in conjunction with a good suppressor can make a firearm very very quiet, almost movie quiet, but in doing so you quite heavily reduce the bullet velocity and effective range thus making the weapon much less lethal.

      The Romans did not want soldiers to boink each other to preserve discipline but they still totally boinked. Officers would often try and get with soldiers they found attractive and some even tried to rape soldier but rape was a big nono if done to men or women unless its unto the people of a town or army you just conquered so there are recorded incidents of soldiers killing their officers after they tried to rape them and they didn't get punished and instead were congratulated.
      historians after the church toke over basically pretended and hide the fact same sexe boinking was a common thing because they banned all form of sex unless it's for procreation. but the fact is they didn't need or have a word that directly translate to the word gay, they had no concept of homosexuality. They were just porking each other cuz it felt good and having romantic relationship with men or women was the same
      All in all, the people of ancient times were more "based" sexually then "LGBT" people today with all their need for categorizations and shit. Heck, rape was illegal what ever your social class and sexes were. The consensus at the time is that someone who has been raped does not need to feel ashamed of themself that you were a guy, a women or even a prostitute of any gender and the romans were kinda sexists by judging a relationship by who was the penetrator and they still didn't treat a raped man like a slut or a failure.
      The roman were wierd about the penetrator thing. if you were trying to be a senator and liked it up the ass, you were a weak man because you "liked to be dominated" and people totally made fun of you but the thing is that probably all guys tried it up the ass in secrete and would hide it. Like it was acceptable to like it up the ass only if you were of a lesser social rank then the dude penetrating you unless you were a woman so literally for the roman, anal was a class thing and if karl marx was borne a roman, das kapital would be totally a different book about it being alright to take it up the ass.

    1 - Polearms and other very LONG weapons are BY FAR the superior weapon of war for actual melee combat. 2 - Parking a car in reverse in a parking spot is objectively safer because you are avoiding having to back out in reverse. Instead the time your doing the reverse driving is from the point where you are in the middle of the street with full visibility (and also your car approaching the spot from the lane ensures the area is immediate area behind it is already "clear" (besides your car)) instead of from the inside going out where you could have huge blind spots if there are large cars parked right next to you.
