Brace yourselves for a rollercoaster of laughter, as this week's episode of Teachers Off Duty dives into the wild and wacky world of parent teacher conferences! We're joined by the insanely funny Devin Siebold, a former teacher turned comedian and social media entertainer, who helps us unlock the treasure trove of side-splitting stories from our parent teacher conference experiences.
Devin hilariously explains why having a student in the room during a conference might not be the best idea, while Tell takes on racism with a daring tale of a conference that ended abruptly. Lauran shares the shocking story of a pair of unruly parents who made their child look like an angel in comparison, and Gabe has us in stitches with his ingenious idea of placing a tip jar on his desk for parents to fill.
This episode is an ode to the wild, the weird, and the wonderful encounters we've all had during parent teacher conferences. You don't want to miss this one!

Submission for the end prompt: "I love the amount of confidence your child has in class, and that their sense of self goes beyond what anyone else thinks. However, I noticed that they express this freedom in the form of picking their nose pretty regularly during class. As we're still in a pandemic, I'm concerned for their health and want to see if we can get to the bottom of solving this issue together."
I am currently teaching 8th grade at a private school where we have Student-Led Conferences. The students create a presentation and the parents and advisor get to listen to their explanation of their grades, behavior, and goals progress and ask questions. Of course, the parents can ask the advisor questions too, but the onus is really on the student. It's so much better than normal Parent-Teacher Conferences and much less stressful for the teacher.
We had to do that an it sucked
This is the way to do middle school conferences. It teaches the kids to take ownership of their education.
They really put an ad on the part where he called IEP students dumb
That bothered me, too.
This conversation frustrated me. I have what’s called a Non-Verbal Learning Disability and had an IEP with accommodations. I do not like the narrative good grades equals not needing an IEP.
I had good grades in some classes but some not. I had a teacher who did not follow my IEP and that is against the Law. Just because I have a 89 in a class doesn’t mean I don’t need my accommodations met.
Your child is gifted artistically & I love that they express themselves maybe instead of using there boogers to draw we could provide them with some art supplies, I would really love to see where that would take them & to see them fully express themselves with the proper supplies.
44:46 your child loves expressing and communicating with his classmates! I’m so glad that he has developed these social skills however lately its been a distraction during lessons. I think we can work together we can solve this issue to benefit his learning and the learning of others! I love hearing his story’s and hope he will never stop telling them when the timing is appropriate!
Kids can pick up on how you feel about them And the other students will too Kids on IEP deserve better
“I send home study guides…” “REALLY?!?” Hahahaha
I love how comfortable your child is in my class, and how they use their hands to express themselves but sometimes they use their fingers in weird areas of their face and it’s just very uncomfortable so if that could be a learning experience for you and your child, please make it that you have a great day, ma’am/sir
Now what if it's neither a ma'am/sir
In my opinion, especially for me being a HUGE perfectionist, if I did something wrong and had to sit in a conference to watch and listen to my teacher and my parents talking about that thing that I did wrong, I would probably beat myself up so bad and end up crying really hard.
same. i hate how its considered ok to let students listen to their teachers say rude things about them.
@@spookyswiftiee
some kids would probably have a straight up panic attack
6:57, but they put an ad over that part
I don't have the ad...
unless you talking about the part when they were calling kids dumb.
Woo new episode these always make me laugh
Really interesting how they want their kids to respect them, but won't afford them any sort of respect just because they're younger than them. Hypocrisy.
Interesting discussion at the beginning about kids being in the room or not for the conferences. I'm a teacher's kid and I remember being in the room for her conferences quietly playing or reading in the back (she deliberately never taught my grade so it was never my friends) and I went to all of mine with her. Now I've got a kindergartner and we're specifically not supposed to bring the kids. If we can't find childcare we leave the kid in the hallway outside the classroom.
I absolutely love the new intro!
Love this podcast
Beautiful work
This is just amazing
I loved this podcast and i listening every single talk
Learning lessons in this discussion for improving PTM from both sides
Loved your every video keep it up ❤️
Love this
I love this podcast
So, to comment on Lauren's statement about the child not bringing his stuff home. One of the signs that a child has ADHD is when they forget to bring their homework home. Not forgetting to do their homework completely forgetting to bring it home. This is in the DSM. Kinda wild she goes onto to say "barely qualifies" and then lists one of the diagnostic criteria
The kids literally forget everything. That is basically universal.
Amazing work
Your video is very informative thank you for this sharing
Great work
Parent teacher interaction is always good
Amazing channel for learning
Great work out
As a parent, student led conferences make me want to pluck my eyeballs out. My kid has straight As. If there is an issue, please don't wait for the scheduled conference time in fall or spring...reach out before. Also, I talk to my kid constantly about school. I dont need her to present a sideshow to me. Uggh. Waste of time!
Same! Even my kids who aren't straight A's.
I don't need to see, the kids never want to go through the games of every area. We skip most of it. I just want to talk to the teacher on areas for next reporting period they need to work on.
It feels like "this could have been email" moment.
Soo super excited
Episode was great
Respect for teachers ❤
You are always right 👍
Wow, I love this. Can you please do an episode about all the stuff happening in America? Please, I would love to hear your side❤
this isn’t meant to be rude but there’s a lot happening in america right now 😂😂
If you’re referring to the issue that rhymes with runs, there is a video they did about this a while back. It’s unfortunate that it’s such a problem. 😞
@@mackenziegerdes5239 I know there is alot lol
They only do things that have to do with teaching and school
@@RX34NK7 Yes but it does effect teachers and schools.
Amazing ❤❤❤❤
Parent comment-
Proudly beaming at child picking her nose, “I’m raisin’ a gold digger.” 🤣
My dad wrote in mine “if she ever burnt the house down I would sit there and say thats the best fire I’ve ever seen”
I love this podcast and I listen to it every single day!
I had a student try to set me up with their single mom… it was super awkward. They said they thought I was a really nice guy, and that they thought I’d make their lonely mom really happy. I gently shut that idea down.
Wonderful

So amazing 😻🤩
I don't remember having parent-teacher conferences when I was in school. I had an IEP and we had meetings for that, but that was it.
Good information
I love it edit and talks
Great podcast
Very helpful video
Our school does a parent-teacher conference in the fall and then in spring grades 4-8 do a student-led conference. The teacher is in the room, but it's more a presentation by the student. It's supposed to give the student more ownership over their school work.
Good work ❤

Amazing Video
Great job
Awesome 👍
Really nice podcast
So good
Very nice work
Good information ❤
Parent teacher conferences need to be on request by families by this point. You have the grades at your finger tips, the only reason they show up is to say they are a “good” parent. Final point, yay a great guest😂
awesome ❤
Yeah I love to have a podcast like this with my friends
Amazing
Your child is gifted artistically & I love that they express themselves maybe instead of using there boogers to draw we could provide them with some art supplies, I would really love to see where that would

Interesting discussion..
Oh my god Mrs Woolley and the rest of you. IEPs and 504s are there to make sure that disabled and neurodivergent students can successfully participate and pass. My autistic self wouldn’t be in community college still with my accommodations if my teachers in K-12 were like “student barley needs the iep” like this is so invalidting and ableist and I hope y’all see that.
Alyce, I'm sorry you had issues but that is NOT what she said.
@@rosun4461that's what she literally said. They barely qualify for the ieps. You either qualify or not. Some people didn't think I needed an IEP because I was close to my other classmates but I still needed someone to read to me because of my dyslexia and do some presentations to just the teacher because of my anxiety and not always understanding. Sounds like students where like me but that doesn't mean they don't qualify. They do. It's not that you barely qualify. You do or don't.
@@emmamckenney4069 - Addressing 'barely qualified' comment: she meant the kids who are just above the arbitrary line set in place that determines who gets special intervention and who doesn't. Just because you aren't above that line doesn't mean you don't deserve extra help, we know how f*cked the American Education system is, and this is no exception. Lots of kids below or just at that line aren't living the perfect life, and I don't agree with it, and neither do (I think) most teachers. But at the end of the day, this is how schools determine who gets IEPs/504s and who doesn't. That's what that comment means.
Past that comment, it should be very clear that she wasn't talking about kids with learning differences. Rather, she was talking about the lazy kids we KNOW are in every school ever who don't do their work, are disruptive in class, and get sent to the principal's office every other day. You know, the ones who never study for a test, go home and get an F and tell their parents 'The teacher never gave us a study guide!' even though they did, and then during parent teacher conferences, when the teacher talks about why the kid's test scores are so low, the parents learn their kid's been lying to them, and they yell at their kid in the car. THOSE kids are the kids she's talking about, and it has nothing to do with kids with learning disabilities (though there may be an overlap, she wasn't chiding these kids inherently because they have learning differences, rather because of their behavior in the classroom, which is likely why she made that first comment about ''barely qualifying.') She was NOT talking about kids with disabilities, and no amount of internet drama people like you cause will change that. And don't try to accuse me of being ablest, because I'm a student who's on the autism spectrum.
Frankly, I don't know how we got to accusing Mrs. Woolley of being ablest, because it should be clear now that the accusation falls to pieces upon even the mildest of scrutiny. But this conversation does point to a larger problem of kids for learning disabilities struggling more often in school and schools themselves having nowhere near enough funding and/or resources to help these kids. I would know, because I spent several years feeling different and not knowing what was 'wrong' with me, why I would lash out on people on the most random of things, until I ended up suspended in 7th grade and I finally learned what was different about my brain and how it works. This is absolutely a problem, not to mention that Mrs. Woolley's school district is VERY rural (definitely not many resources there). But to point the blame at Mrs. Woolley is misguided, and quite frankly, malevolent.
@@jacobgao3940Ok just adressing the "barely qualifie" thing. You or the teacher does not know how much effort you put into keeping your grades high I remember in high school when I was bullyed later on had soo sever anxity that I couldn't go in to school witouth melting/breaking down 1 per week my grades somehow didn't f-ing dorped soooo my dyslexia (sorry only saying it now) and anxity was acually fine. Oh also Im autistic wich I didn't bring up to teacher beacuse I only barely got extra time or any help ever in my 10 YEARS(not screaming just emphisice) now so I just kinda gave up you know. My "story" aka life is the perfect example why grades don't always reflect on a students abilitys 1 to 1. For me it was great effort to even survive that time so I would love them to take something from me and not be judmental.
@@fannikarpati5563 I'm late to this, but it is not that cut and dry anymore. They sit in with these meetings. With us and parents. They know the changes they get and many know the big picture is that it makes it easier. They have little reason to go against what gets them easier and less work.
As a Jr High teacher about half of these accommodations are so broad and generic it is what every teacher already does as a teacher and they have no meaning. The other half are so specific they don't apply to me as an elective teacher. Which is its own nightmare because so many just don't care.
Great workout 👍

I think “things I thought I’d never says as a teacher” should be an episode
