    Something I know many of you have asked about before - are there such things as Birth Factories in the Imperium. I try and address that issue, as well as covering a little to do with how the Imperium copes with its heavy casualties and losses - I'll have a few shorter bits and some long things coming up soon. On a side note my voice is still recovering, but slowly improving, its taking a long time to get back to full strength but it hasn't gotten any worse is the main thing. Thanks for all your support as per usual guys - every comment and like makes all the difference

      Yes, but the Imperium is generally a concentration of all the worst excesses of suffering. A hive is like a toxic swamp, in the middle of the swamp is a favela, over the favela hangs Kowloon and on top of Kowloon someone's built a low-income housing project, over the project someone's plopped a heavy industrial complex and built suburban housing around the chimneys - after all, we're getting pretty high and those people will need heating. Then someone came a long a built a church on top of all of this and said "I live here now, so all of this is mine - I own all of you!".
      Eventually they couldn't house everyone so they dug a hole under the favela and decided to start throwing all the excess births - along with any trash - and let them fend for themselves.
      It's *all* of the worst shit and only the worst shit.

      Thought you were exaggerating about the Roman losses until I looked that up, the Battle of Canae was hardcore. 50,000 Roman's died against the Carthaginian army with only 16,000 escaping, over 75% of the Roman soldiers there died and this made up 20% of the men of fighting age. Fucking brutal.

    • @mdc47
      @mdc47 Před 4 lety +197

      @@scerpalman It took SEVERAL HOURS between when Hannibal's troops encircled the Romans until the actual end of the "battle" (read: massacre). That's several hours of just killing trapped people. One at a time. With swords.
      The sources actually state that, when Hannibal's men finally killed their way to the middle of the mass of encircled Romans, they found that some Romans had just dug a hole and buried their heads in the grounds. Choosing a horrifying suicide by suffocation over just waiting your turn to be killed.

    The funny thing with imperium and imperial warfare is that people are the only thing they are unlikely to run out of. Tanks, ships, weapons, food, those are all things that an imperial general has to worry about but not really men - men are replacable, Macharius heavy tanks much less so. This is one of the reasons why Space Marine foundings are so rare, building a chapter is very expensive because of all the specialised weaponry and equipment a chapter requires and how limited is the know-how how to construct and organise construction of such complex machinery, not even considering how complex is the production of the marines themselves. Every chapter needs not only power armours but also land riders, rhinos, whirlwinds and predators to be mobile on the battlefield and its own void fleet to get to the war zone itself. The same goes for the Astra Militarum but in their case everything is much easier to automatise, after all the main reason why they are using the lasrifles is because they are easy to produce in billions, not because they are effective.
    To sumarise: manpower is not the problem, equipment is the main limiting factor of the imperial millitary.

    • @nerowulfee9210
      @nerowulfee9210 Před 4 lety +5

    • @SusCalvin
      @SusCalvin Před 3 lety +8

      They don't seem to build chapters from scrap any more. Virtually no one has done that since the Emperor founded the first legions.
      Instead they "branch off" elements of an overgrown existing chapter into a new one. They get a starter kit of manpower, serfs, a relic tank and a battle barge. Then you plonk them down on a planet and grant it as their fief. They get rights of supply and recruitment negotiated, and now you have a new chapter in that sector.
      Some chapters treat their successor chapters practically as junior franchises. Even if not, the successors usually keep some doctrines and traditions from their parent chapter. Other older successor chapters start to develop their own culture and doctrine, usually the ones who are millennia old.

    • @SusCalvin
      @SusCalvin Před 3 lety +3

      A lot of battle zones don't have those huge reserves. You get this many infantry regiments and no more because the rest are going to an even worse battle zone. Moving people is logistical work. Moving the stuff they will fight with and eat is logistics.
      I tend to look at how players actually use infantry. How many are running them forward in huge blobs, how many use mechanized infantry and how many plop them behind cover to hold the back field and defend artillery.
      Not all battlezones are huge. You could have a place where three or ten regiments are involved, and that is all they will ever have to hold it against whatever eldar pop out of the webway.

Because warp nonsense was cutting off this sector, and our regiments needed these shoes they were making out on the front five planets away.
      We didn't massacre them, we beat up the ringleader of the mob and held the others off by threatening them with lasguns. And that was probably the best we could have done in that moment.

    I never pictured it as some sort unending nightmare existence. You can see elements that the authors have pulled from human history. The guard units borrow heavily from the soviet military. The ecclesiarchy is clearly based on medieval Christianity. I always pictured hive cities as very Dickensian, for lack of a better word. Awful to be sure but not a never ending hellscape. I doubt that the socioeconomic makeup of the Imperium has been fleshed out much beyond the caricatures of a vast downtrodden lower class with a tiny but powerful aristocracy riding atop it. I would imagine that few people other than a few nerds like me would be that interested in a more fully fleshed out background. The caricatures, as they exist in the lore, provide an adequate framework upon which to tell the stories which most of the fans are interested in.

    Regarding the vitae wombs, it would reasonable to believe it's a more primitive, mass produced incubation chamber equivalent of what was used for the Primarchs for example. In that vein, harvesting and evaluating gametes could be similar to how gene-seeds are sampled and stored. Rather than accelerating development or imprinting knowledge, I think the vitae wombs could be justified simply by the toxic environment of Krieg. As inhospitable as an artificial womb may be, it's still probably less contaminated than the bloodstream of a Death Korps member, and keeping female guardsmen in decontaminated chambers for at least 2 trimesters is probably less efficient.

      @@TornadoADV I really doubt that accepting the caste system happens automatically and as something genetically pre-determined for the Tau and things like the existence of the Farsight colonies prove that. Those colonies thrive even without the existence of etherials, which got killed during an Ork attack, if I remember correctly. In the aftermath and without warp travel and the option to replace the killed ethereals, the surviving Tau had no option but to carry on without a supreme caste and, as Commander Farsight soon discovered to his own surprise, did not only function and work together well, but experienced an increasingly clear mind.
      Apparently the ethereals use pheromones or some other form of mind control and a mix of blind fanatism hammered into the people and a very rigid and harsh control system. The caste system is _not_ something that is written within the Tau's genes and the ethereals of the Tau empire are damn well aware of it, because otherwise they would not have declared the Farsight colonies a complete no-go zone for the rest of the Tau.
      Also, the Tau have "embraced" several other species and incorporated them into their empire and in a lot of cases this did not happen by free will or as the result of negotiations or sheer force.
      Oh and by the way, the Tau are the very definition of a totalitarian state, even _more so_ than the empire, I might say. And they are the perfect example for communism, in fact, the Tau empire is a communists wet dream.

      Either way, I can concur that they aren’t any true form of communism because communism is not a reachable goal for any sapient species. I merely stated this as man is a very selfish creature, and typically our nature leaks into our fiction (that being the tau lore, etc).

    Good reference to the first and second world wars. WWI saw charge after charge of opposing lines into machine gun and artillery fire all to just advance, retreat, advance, retreat, etc. During D-Day, the main strategy was blunt force and the Allies believed that given the choice the men in the boats had, either death by gunfire/drowning in the ocean or trying to advance on the beach with your brothers in hopes you take the high ground and live to see the end, the men chose to fight on which was one reason we won the battle. Many paratroopers and special forces were dropper to sabotage defensive lines and alot was done to keep casaulties low and the landings smooth. Aside from Omaha Beach with 2000 casaulties, the landings mostly went smoothly with few casaulties. Omaha Beach's problem was the US bombers not bombing the German defenses as planned and unexpected currents. It was not designed as a blunt attack; just failures and bad luck.
      I think WW1 is definetly the better comparison in terms of doctrine.

      They have some limitations by design. They might be infertile, there will never be a bloodline of marines. All marine chapters, traitor or not, need a human populatin to recruit from.

      @@Furzkampfbomber Marine armour is 3+. Normie carapace is 4+ and standard iggy flak is 3+. Some really important dudes in the Imperium have human-scale power armour.
      Behind the armour, marines are T4. Same as a basic ork but higher than a T3 baseline human.

    No wonder this unappreciated citizens of the Imperium of Men turns in to chaos. Come, taste, see, feel. You can be so much more. Instead of suffering , immense pleasure. Instead of fear, the power to wield it. Instead of weaknesses, strength beyond imagination . Instead of submission, control over the destiny.

      And yet worshipping chaos is a trap in of itself. One has to remember that the Imperium was set up this way by them as a means to subvert the Emperors work.
      They waited until the heresy is underway, when destiny is set and tjen send a small grpup og chaos worshipping Word Bearers to scatter the Primarchs. Thus, everything goes the way it is destined to go.

    As far as I know (and my knowledge is limited to the books), reproduction is still achieve through coïtus and pregnancy. Characters know their parents or children, and there have been no mention of science to help or speed to reproduction. I am still suspicious though, seeing how we, real humans, are impacted by pollution and how this pollution impacts on our health and fertility. By realistic standards, all imperial citizen might be as steril as a mule, due to mortal deceases and cancerous conditions of living. A few experiences are possible, though, on some worlds, such as Krieg or Necromunda, and it is a well-known fact that imperial elites and noble families use eugenism and genetic manipulations to improve their children.
