It's not the body work...it's the lies that are my concern....now....as for a little pickup.....it will do just fine for what I needed...getting around the farm and running errands....

Houses ROT and go up or retain value where cars loose 90% of thier value???? It's psychological programming to sell new cars at high prices, well the consequence is used cars being of much better value, and worth.

I guarantee if you find one, its got the cheapest crap parts they could find inside it...
      Think of it like this..
They wouldnt sell it for 1000 if it cost more then that to build, nobody does things to loose money or break even.. Which means a fully rebuilt engine for $1000 cost them 500 to 700 to build.
5 to 700 to rebuild an engine = cheapest of the cheap crap parts.

The beds on those mid-80s toyotas were all prone to rusting from the inside out. My '86 was in really bad shape when I finally sold it in 2005. The cab didn't rust at all. The story I was told was that the beds were manufacrured in a different plant, and the welds weren't sealed correctly, so water gets trapped from below and rusts its way out. That said, I miss that truck and would love to own a 90s model.

As a guy who built his own 22re this last summer, the bill came to $2,765. About a third of which was machine work (limited shop availability in my area) I did however do some upgrades to the engine while I was at it such as an 89+ upper intake so I have the newer style IACV, a cam, dual row chain, a brand new head and a better clutch. A little more than I wanted to spend but all said and done I know it's built right and everything is built to spec.

My toyota truck was in worse condition when i traded my built mazda truck and gave him extra money. I spent over 1k in parts making that mazda suspension better.
My engine is clean now that i replaced all the seals, but the guy i traded is a friend and he spent 2,500 getting my engine rebuilt. I had to replace my valve cover gasket and oil pan gasket though. I suppose he was being cheap where he could cause I’ve spent over 1000 in parts this month to fix my truck.
The seller was a body guy and I’m an automechanic.
My trucks body is in worse condition, but these trucks have value and they last forever. Just gonna be an expensive restoration.
The seller didnt do a perfect body job on my truck either because it wasnt a car he was planning to keep. His cars, trucks and motorcycles are beautiful because he is a body guy.
Anyways, i hope this perspective helps

I know about that fine tooth comb. I was looking at an 02 Dodge 1500 quad cab. People wanted 5k for it and the first thing I saw was dash trim was missing. Had a fog light switch, no fogs (found the original bumper under the tonneau cover with the fogs), tires were bald, drove okay, but had a pull. Stopped and made sure I didn’t hear anything unusual, checked all the switches and lights. Found a vacuum leak. Got back to the place killed it and wanted to see how it would start after. 🤣 Damn battery exploded under the hood. I tossed the keys back and told them to knock some off the price.

Times have changed. I grew up on a farm in the Midwest in the late 70's and 80's. We didn't have fairly nice trucks (except the month it took for a fairly nice one to be put to work and get thrashed). We had dependable pile of crap farm trucks on the farm. That said, Toyota trucks hold up well where the roads aren't salted. I have a couple on my ranch in Oregon with sound frames and 300,000 + miles. I had one in Pennsylvania years ago and it rusted out like the one you looked at. I'm with you on not supporting shadiness, regardless if it's a deal or not.

  • @Anthony_in_Bloomington_Indiana

Ahh yes, the old, I just had the engine rebuilt scam.
When you're shopping for an old car and truck, and the seller says, "I just had the engine rebuilt."
Right away ask, "Let's see your receipts."
The odds are he will have nothing to show you. If he's lying about the engine, he's also lying about everything else he figures he can get away with.
    So shop elsewhere!
As for this truck, the body work was crappy. The engine was original and had not been rebuilt.
If that old guy is a scammer, he's pretty bad at scamming.

I googled it and it was $400 new. Left message, guy calls back and I tell him I'll take it. Meet up 10 at night (I also had a headache so I wanted to just get it and go), looked it over really quick and said ok, here's the cash.
He says, "I'm actually impressed you didn't try to start haggling on the price. Here's 20 back." Cool, thank you, and was on my way.
Only time I posted something online for sale was an old Honda accord for $1100 on a Honda collector site. Nothing but scammers calling and emailing. (I'm in WA) phone rings- "Hi, I'm in SC (iirc) and want to buy that honda, do you have a paypal account?"

something to keep in mind. toyota trucks (all of them) have a rust issue at the front of the rear leaf springs. even ones driven in dry climates are susceptible to this.

michael adams not true. Only first gen tacos do. My 85s body is completely rotting around a solid frame. It has spent most its life on the California coast and has been used mainly on the beach in the sand.

Have you considered purchasing a state owned vehicle at auction for a farm truck? Check with the state for when they auction their vehicles.

Yea..I've been watching some online auctions...thing about it is that those darn trucks go for good money around here....TV shows have everyone going to, and watching autions driving up prices

Stoney Ridge Farmer dude my parents owned a farm we had a dozen pickups,my step-dad mostly would get them at auctions, but most of ours came from people he knew who took care of their stuff and knew to get hold of him when they were ready to part ways, you made the right call ,the truck was shit and there are deals out there, don't be scared to travel I do alot of car shopping online and one thing for sure is the price of a vehicle will vary significantly from one part of the country to the other, one states garbage is another states gems it seems to me

ik04 you my get a better deal go and get a ford ranger no a toyota . i think there is a lot off people that i know that will pay that money for a toyota pickup with the 22re engine and if is the one with the solid axle. Probably more .

Another thing to look at on 80s and 90a Toyota trucks.... The frame will crack at the front spring perch on rear suspension. No so much from rust but metal fatigue... Easy enough to fix with some plating abd drilling.. But it's a strong bargaining chip

  • @mariodesmo
    @mariodesmo Před 6 lety

when I first saw the body and your description, I estimated it to be a $2000 truck. Your $2500 is not far from that, so I think you're pretty good on that estimate. And its always good to think what will it be worth if you decide to sell in 3-5 years. Gotta be able to get your (most of) money back.

Gotta give you a point Josh... every farm truck started out pretty and as it got old it grew into the farm 4000 bucks... um I bought a 1994 Dodge for 750 just needed a trans its 4x4 another thing I think you need for a farm. You need a 3/4 ton at least for a farm truck... you are gonna haul Hay or feed you need a heavy hauler... just my farmer opinion... 3/4 ton 4x4 with decent hitch... if kids are future extended cab works or crew cab... just my humble opinion... be safe out there brother stoney ridge farmer

    • @tdgreenbay
      @tdgreenbay Před 6 lety +3

Stoney Ridge Farmer you can find many older Deisel powered 3/4 or 1 ton trucks with 4x4. They are made to pull.. I would stay away from a Ford with the 6.0L you can find plenty of late 1990s to early 2000s as well as some nice 2010s or newer. Many 20 year old deisel pickups for less than 8K with increased power and longer engine life.. I know for a fact the navistar built 7.3L powerstroke in the Fords late 1990s will with proper maintenance will get over 1,000,000 miles on the engine. Many will out live the transmissions 3 times over.. cummins, duramax as well are very good engines.. newer engines require more maintenance for emmisions and are touchier in their maintenance like your Mercedes. I wish you luck in your search...

I would do something different if you can. I don't know your financials or what your vehicle fleet looks like, but you might consider 'retiring' an existing truck to farm truck duty and buying something nicer as a daily driver. Esp. if you have a truck whose market value is roughly $4k. At least you'll know what you are getting.
Also, check out GovPlanet.com - Dirt Every Day did an episode about buying surplus US gov't vehicles for relatively cheap. I think a Humvee is around $4k for a running one and they can't be legally driven on the road without lots of work - czcams.com/video/Wg0ziRtQ9JM/video.html

Yeah for the price point I would buy F250 or F350 with an in-line 6 or 7.3l diesel. Otherwise I would be looking for a Chevy 2500 or 3500 that still has a strong 350 or 454. Or go with a Dodge with a 12v Cummins. Personally I will buy any Ford in-line 6 I can get for a good deal.

Fair enough, some people will go great lengths to hype up the truck then when you get there will say "well this happened because so and so" and given all the problems the truck has will still try to get you to buy the truck and all those little bumps and dings will have a story. Good thing you inspected the truck.
