Hi, I own a garage door company here in Phoenix Az. We have been in business since I was charging $140 for years for two springs installed on a double car 16x7 door. Job takes on average 30 minutes start to finish. Now fast forward to 2023 and we charge $250 for two springs installed on a 16x7 door. It's such an easy job I'm amazed how high the prices go with Some companies cough cough A1 garage door. 😂

Informative video! I think you kept the right perspective by looking at it from three ways. For a jackshaft style opener, the "middle" style operator quoted $750 to replace the spring, rod, bearing plates for an 8 foot door. Maybe an hour of work. Door is Wayne Daulton so the WD Conversion Kit was needed. Stated the whole opener needed removal from the wall to reset the tension wire which had unraveled or come off of its pulley. Door/spring is also 6 years old. I am guessing it is a fallacy with the jackshaft style that the maintenance is a little more involved when something as simple as the tension wire coming off the pulley.

I work for one of the largest GD companies in our area. In business for over 50yrs. Watch out for what we call tailgaters, warranty is off as soon as you can’t see their tailgate. Unfortunately there are many people out there that are like that. They get in trouble then just close shop and change name. I like this guy he is honest. The problem we have now is getting parts. Our cost for garage doors alone have gone up over 200% in the last 16 months.

    • @parts4garagedoors278

You are correct. The cost of parts has gone up dramatically due to the steel industry, shipping issues, and the economy. The prices shown will have to be updated.

Hi, I got a Amarr double very heavy garage door (we are in hurricane zone) which is out of balance because is almost impossible to lift it manuanlly. I follwed your video and I found that I can't rotate the springs any more, they are totaled compressed. What should be the issue here, are the springs damaged, lost of eleasticty, old and need to be replaced?. The whole garage door and lifting system was changed in 2015. Thank you

700 bucks for a pair of torsion springs is way too much, also you do not want to hire a contractor that dosnt have liability insurance, if he gets hurt and winding springs can be deadly not just injures but deadly if done wrong you could be faced with a big hit on your home owners insurance. Anytime you hire somone to work on your property you are liable if they get hurt unless they provide you with the fact they're insurance will cover your property and them if something were to go wrong.
Its called shop keepers or garage insurance and its pretty cheap a years policy cost less then 2k a year depending on the industry they are in.
You as a business owner make this up on volume of business and in turn larger volume of business means your more qualified and have a decent reputation as long as reviews are good enough to back this up. Most people don't complain about how good someone is but if they distroy your property and do crappy work they will scream bloody murder because that guys not going to fix it.
    He dosnt care.
A fair price has to do with your local market value, the price people are willing to pay. And how well someone will back up the work they've done.
But all torsion springs need to be maintained, berrings need to be oiled. Tracks oiled rollers oiled chains oiled, and last the springs need to be oiled.
If you do this they will last, my sets lasted 23 years doing this and the door had a lot of cycles up and down in that time frame.
But nothing last forever the door is pushing 30 years its wood and its very heavy 16x7 the last set of torsion springs were long cycle type ment to be used a lot. The rope or cables should always be replaced with the springs always, not if.
You always replace the set of springs and cables at the same time.
A 16x7 door weights about 600 to 800 lbs it can do serious dammage to a car or kill someone if it falls on them.
Ever see a spring break? Not only is it loud but its very violent, if it wasnt for the rod it could kill someone, strexh or lift springs should have a safty cable ive seen them break and take out a cars deck lid as well as the back window, they should also be kept oiled.

I always kept the bearings oiled but I never kept the spring oiled maybe that's why it broke but it lasted for over 45 years.

I've got no problem with small businesses if they stand behind there work and have insurance. In fact id rather support a small guy. But here we've got a company thats been in the area 70 years. Thats pretty hard to beat.
And they got a 5 star reputation.
I've seen openers they installed in the 50s that still work, not as safe as modern equipment but the separate motor and pully systems last for ever it seems. Just don't have the safty equipment on them. You could run them up and down 1000s of times and they always work. Do that with one of the modern lifts the dam plastic gears wear out.

Dont get mad at other for having a bigger mindset than yours if the market is there for the service and price they are doing and taking full advantage of it

You charge the customer a service fee to offset your payroll taxes, THAT'S INSANE!!!!!!! Imagine if I was on a job interview for an office job that pays 100k per year. Now imagine if I tell the HR people at the company that I'm interested in the job but I want to be paid $135k instead of the 100K that they offered me because I need that extra $35k to cover my taxes. THAT'S OBSERD AND THAT IS WHY YOU CAN NEVER TRUST A SMALL BUSINESS. When people are in a position to write their own checks by choosing what to charge for blind items greed will always take over.

    • @SpectrumGarageDoorsService
      @SpectrumGarageDoorsService Před 6 měsíci

I think you are missing the point. Companies that stay in business have to account for all biz expenses and factor that in to each job. If you take all your monthly expenses and divide that by your average jobs, you will get an average cost per job before you even walk out the door. Bigger companies that spend more, have to offset these expenses. It's the only way they can stay afloat! The main point being made is that an owner operator with one truck, no employees, and no office location can afford to charge less. The other point being made is that just because a company is much bigger, and charges quite a bit more- it doesn't mean they are ripping off their customers. A healthy and bigger company will often have newer and more dependable vehicles, the most qualified techs and employees will want to work there, they will have better insurance, longevity in the market, better warranty terms, sometimes great financing options etc. Some of the small companies are barely making it, and it's like pulling teeth to get them to honor a warranty! Their less experienced techs are more likely to make a costly mistake, ding your car, or even walk away from a job they are underpaid for.

@@SpectrumGarageDoorsService In trade you get paid by the job, not by the hour. All of these small trade businesses hireing staff and trying to rip them off by paying them a crappy hourly wage while they collect the real money, it's sick. Pay the actual person who did the actual job, don't let some fat slob who hasn't picked up a wrench in 10 years become a multi-millionaire on the broken backs of the workers. If you can't do a good enough job marketing and booking work, you can't just charge more per job to insure the bills get paid. If small business was properly regulated and small business state and federal tax returns were properly audited we would have more jackoffs going out of business as they should and the cream will rise to the top. Instead we live in an unregulated business structure in the US where nobody is honest, everyone makes fake reviews of their services on-line and there is no accountability. Heck, when you have one of the biggest business crooks of our lifetime make it all the way to the top, everyone else becomes emboldened to lie. If Trump keeps getting away with it, so will they. That is the mentality, the psychological mentality. Once someone lies a few times are realizes they can get away with it, they'll keep doing it. Coming up with lame excuses for this and that, overhead, truck maintenance fee, whatever and for some reason the customers buy it. I'm not going to pay a truck maintenance fee for a business truck that is essentially already a tax write off, that is the very definition of double dipping. Business should be hard. It should be hard to make a profit starting a small business to prevent the average greedy jackoff from infiltrating the market. It should be that most people who attempt a business fail. It was like that in the past for good reason. Now anyone can start a business as long as they are dishonest. The more dishonest they are, the better chances they have to thrive and grow. Nothing more than the psychology of the unregulated greedy businessman praying to the all mighty dollar. The old adage is as true as it has ever been...... If you want something done right and you don't want to get ripped off, do it yourself! After all, you don't have to be that smart to work in a trade. After all, they didn't even go to college in the first place. The only reason we pay you guys to do our work is because we are to busy doing real jobs to do it ourself. Don't triple charge us to do this simple grunt work because for some reason some of you are wanna be "businessmen". You want the money of a businessman without actually being a real businessman.
