    My spring broke and I never replaced one before and it took me 40 minutes, twice as long as it did you.
    It cost me $35 for the spring on Amazon and 40 minutes of my day for a newbie that’s not bad.
    I was thinking about robbing banks but I think robbing customers would keep me out of jail so maybe I’ll take up the trade.

      How you going to get the customers? I guess they will just ring you since you have a set of winding bars now. Will you be insured so when you hurt yourself the homeowner doesn’t have to worry about you suing them? If something other than a spring is broken, then what?
      That being said, he is WAY overcharging for 2- 10k cycle springs.

    I had a overhead door company here in Connecticut come out and replace 2 springs and install a new motor, oil and adjust my garage door he charged me just about 1350$ took the tech about 3 hours and gave me a 1 year warranty I found the price to be very fair. The company has 10 vans that go out on the road daily, when I booked it was just about a 2 week wait so that tells me there is a very high demand for this type of service. I have been in the woodworking business always working for someone else and I have to work 50 hours a week to clear a 1000 check. I have been considering learning the garage door trade and going into business for myself.

    You didn’t spread the springs before re-attaching the set screws?

  • @jtimagesartDivergentFRST

    I'd invest in a filer. Smooth out the torsion tube at the points where the set screws were puncturing the tube. If you have to hammer a drum off, file the tube or upsale a new tube if not an overhaul with new parts.

    Hi, very interesting video and Thank you for posting! I got a double very heavy garage door (we are in hurricane zone) which is out of balance because is almost impossible to lift it manuanlly. I follwed your video and I found that I can't rotate the springs any more, they are totaled compressed. What should be the issue here, are the springs damaged, old and need to be replaced?. The whole garage door and lifting system was changed in 2015. Thank you

      Not really cut throat. In general the first company that answer the call get the job. When the car is stuck inside the garage 500 or 700 bucks makes little difference.

      Absolutely! I just replaced both springs on a 16 ft door at 80 bucks per spring. $160.00 total for springs, and I installed. I Had about 30 minutes labor involved. He ripped her off in my opinion. $985.00 +/- after all is said and done. Shame, shame. Good business venture, but I have a conscience.

      @jtb-southphilly Před 4 měsíci +2

      You can always tell when someone has been at it too long. Not fixing that arm was shameful. Also, title says ‘Someone put this on BACKWARDS’ and yet, he didn’t fix that either but had no problem with charging for an entire door install (minus his golden 10% discount).

  • @briank10101
    @briank10101 Před rokem +2

    I just did my own springs and got the 190,000 cycles longer ones so they'll probably last 40 to 100 years if I lube them every year. I figured the $310 total I paid for the springs and cones pair from DDM was worth it. Total job cost $330 as I got new cables and some extra vice grips. I figured the long term overall costs were best with the much longer lasting springs. Our garage goes through 4 to 8 open/close cycles per day and who wants to replace springs every 6 years with 11,000 cycle springs? Uh...the garage repair guy. :)

    How much do you charge for pair springs and how many cycles are they??

    • @GarageDoorTrainingSchool
      @GarageDoorTrainingSchool  Před 2 lety +1

      Springs prices and cycles differ depending on the type of spring that they are. So it really depends on the door you are installing them on

    • @the.tricky.outdoorsman
      @the.tricky.outdoorsman Před 2 lety +13

      Most torsion springs (shown in this video) are industry rated for 10,000 cycles when they are correctly paired with a garage door. So here we have a dual spring set up which would be 10,000 cycles. This roughly translates to 10 years with normal use of a door. (Up/down twice a day) you can increase the wire size and length for more cycles but it's unnecessary and overkill. Springs do vary in cost. 1100 bucks is almost as much as a new door. I work in this industry and I just fixed two springs, cables and some other parts and the total for parts and labor was only around $280.

      Not sure about that price. 22 years in the industry and I only see that kind of price from Precision. Also you should adjust everything even the opener arm so it is in the right angle. You also do not lube up everything the way it needs to be.
