- Replacing both cables on your garage door my seem difficult. It's actually pretty easy once you understand how to do it. Torsion spring's are what counter balance the garage door weight. The torsion spring system and cable's work in unison, so you want to be sure you know what you're doing. Garage door spring's are very dangerous. This video show's how to replace the garage door spring's without dealing with the dangerous spring's.

Thanks I'll have to get some of those Rods to tension it.
@@jasoncharbonneau9588 research how to do it. Watch a few different videos. Torsion spring tension is nothing to play with.
If your somewhat mechanicly inclined you'll have no issues. 🙏👊🏼
@@garagedoorgenius
Thanks. I should be ok. I guess I just need to determine how many 1/4 turns I need to make once I get to that point.
@@jasoncharbonneau9588 7' will get around 30-31. Now if there is somewhat tension on it you can start out small. Put about 10 quarters on it. Been tested out.
Just sent a donation for the channel. Thanks!
Perfect! One side broke at the bottom loop and so I figured I'd go to Lowes and grab a replacement. As you mentioned, they only sell the longer extension spring cables, but I thought I could cut it and crimp a barrel on it. Wrong! Regular pliers do not work for this. Scavenged a cable from the door we don't use and tried for an hour to get it on. Seemed impossible with the cable tension so I called for service, but they were closed for the day. Watched this video, ordered the right parts and a pair of vise grips on Amazon and they arrived the next day. In 30 minutes, I replaced the broke cable and did the other side too since that cable was frayed. Not a lot of room to work on the ladder, but I got it done and saved a large service fee. Thanks again!
What a freaking awesome comment! Good job my guy getting the job done and saving money too! 👊🏼
Wow. What a game changer. I used to unload and reload the torsion springs to do this job. Took me a fraction of the time and was also much safer to do it this way. Thanks!
Can't believe I missed this comment. It's been almost a year.
Thank you for the comment! Hope this method helps.
A shockingly fast, flawless fix. Thank you, very much. If there is a Menards store in your state, you might find the cables sets for the 8’ and 7’ foot doors in the aisle- I did tonight. My store had them mixed on the hook, so make sure you grab the right set. They have a cheap 3 pack of vise grips too, if yours have gone missing.
My cable broke last night. Got a new set today, watched this video and installed them! Thank you for making this video!!
Glad the video helped! 💯👍🏼
Mine broke this morning off to go get some cables. I figure if one broke, the other isn't that far off.
Very helpful. Have been residentially installing garage doors for over 1.75 years and have yet to try a trick like that. Cool channel.
Thank you for the awesome comment! 🤘🏼
been repairing garage doors for about 6 months now and any time ive had to replace cables i always take the tension off the springs. this is a game changer for me. thank you.
You're welcome buddy! 🙏
Who told you to take the tension off. Just back wind the springs. Been doing it for 21yrs
Great idea. Instead of winding the cable around the drum a bunch of times you could loosen the drum and spin the drum winding the cable until it’s snug
Easy 5 minute fix. Thank you for a clear video tutorial!
You're welcome 🙏.
Thank you for the awesome video that was very helpful for me with replacing the cables on my garage door. Note that I did receive poor cables from the first company I used on Amazon. The second set worked perfectly
Thank you so much... we lost one line with a shovel issue and then the next day it was another rake on the other side.. so got the lines like you had and replaced both and now I save some $$$
Thank you again for the video
🙏
THANKS! Saved us nearly $300!
Worked like a charm! The hard part was I had to lower the door while I waited for the cables to be delivered so raising the door was really hard--I ended up using a car jack to get it started.
Awesome! Great job Thomas. 🙏👍🏼

Dude, You just save me about $250 bucks! I was changing out the metal rollers to a nylon rollers when the spring cables became untangle. After watching your video, I was able to fix the spring cable myself without calling a professional. Good job!
Awesome comment! Glad to help.
Righteous I'm exactly in the same situation. Awesome
You got this broh! 🙏✌🏼
Thanks to you, I fixed the problem in 15 minutes. Great video. Thanks a lot.
Glad to help!🙏
Thanks for the video. One note - If your rollers are going bad, or you just want to replace them, now is the time to replace the roller where the cable attaches as well. There will be no tension on it with the door up and cable off. I did all of my rollers, changing over to smooth, nylon, rollers, and the cables at the same time.
Awesome pro tip!
After (a lot) more perseverance I was able to pry off the old cables. I did this after verifying the loops on the new cables would fit over the knob on the bottom bracket. I think what happens is the loop elongates over time and mine just fit much tighter which is probably a good thing. I think the only additional tip I'd make is to put a bend in the cable where it comes out of the wheel and wraps around, so it conforms better without a little hump there. Otherwise, I think this was best video. Trying to change the cables with the door down causes the bottom brackets to be jammmed near the floor with little access to get the cables off the hub (in my case). Thanks for the video.
That's great news you got it off! And also, great tip. People will read this and gain something from it.
Also, you don't want to try and take cables off when the door is down. That's when the tension is applied and very dangerous. Do it with the door open. Tension is reduced GREATLY. Allowing you to do the cable change without fighting spring tension.
Thanks for watching my video Dan! 👍🏼
@@garagedoorgenius If the cables have snapped and are already out, would it make sense to install the new cables with the door down? My door is super heavy to lift as it is now. This just happened to me this morning.
Wow, you make it look so simple. I am going to try it.
Thanks 🙏

Dude, I followed your steps to the Tee and got it done in like 10 minutes. You saved me at least $200!! Can't thank you enough! What happened to my door: came down on a hard object on one side and the cable came undone (strangely, the door didn't back up upon hitting something). My cable was intact so I reused it. :D

i dont ever comment on videos but this legit saved me $$$. I got quotes for this work between $100-$240, but legit followed this video and replaced it in 5 mins by simply following advice and buying cables from Amazon. Lowes, and home depot do not carry these! I would add a bit more advice however, make sure the cable lengths are the same as the one you are taking off. There are different lengths, but i found mine was 8’6 and i measured the new cable and old cable to make sure they are the same length before attempting to do the install. Great job and thanks for posting this video!!!
Glad to save you some money bro. That's the name of the game!
Good pro tip also 👍🏼💯🔥.
Great video! Went to the comments section. Didn't even watch other videos anymore after checking out the positive feedbacks. After 2 hours I replaced both cables. Took longer than anticipated because my door is old school from the early 90's. There's no knob fixture at the bottom of the door to hook the cable to. Instead there's a rod with a pin so the only way to remove the cable is to pull down the whole bracket/roller assembly about 2 inches so that I can slide the rod out to free up the cable. Safer design but not repair friendly. Thanks for this great video i saved a couple hundreds. 🤙🏽
Awesome brother! Glad to help.

Thanks for this video. I am gong to save this for future reference, because my door is old.
Hey, thanks for the continuing support of my channel and vids.
The method in the video is super safe. No dealing with tension springs. I always try to lookout for the novices out there saftey. Also, even if you would bar the springs to change cables, it can be a pain in the arse to get the hoop off the bottom fixture. Much easier with the door open. 💯👊🏻
Perfect tutorial i got mine done in about 15 minutes!!
Awesome!
Thanks for the comment. 👍🏼
my hubby and i did it in just a few minutes … thx for the info
Nice job you two!! No problem and glad to help.
This was easy. It took me 10 minutes and all done...Than You!!!!
Glad to help! 🙏
Thanks so much for the video, I have to install a new bottom seal on a Overhead Garage door brand. I have to remove the bracket the cable loop is on so I'm going to follow your video instructions. I always thought removing the cable that it would be under the spring tension but I guess it isn't by watching your video. Thanks again
You're welcome and thank you for watching the video! I also appreciate the donation. That is super nice of you. 🙏
As long as you keep one cable on, you'll be fine. Replacing one at a time. Don't take both off at the same time because you will lose all the spring tension.
When the door is open there is still tension on the spring. Just not the full amount like if the door was closed.
You got this Gregory! 👍🏼👊🏼🤘🏻
Great video. Thanks for the update.
You're welcome Michael 😁! Thank you for checking it out. 💯👍🏼
Thank you very good clear and fully detailed video.

Let me know how it goes! You got this. 👊🏼
@@garagedoorgenius Well, didn't work out as easy as I had hoped. Since both cables snapped it was a little more tedious job. Had to install both cables, then wind each individual torsion spring then readjust the cables on the drums. Finally got it done but there is a slight gap on the left side. I gave up. haha
@@milesej05 well you did more than what most people can. Hats off to you sir. Your mechanically inclined enough to figure out what needs to happen to get the job done. Although you got a gap you definitely did a good job in my book. Especially if you're not a garage door guy and just a DIYer.
@@garagedoorgenius I'm pretty mechanically inclined, but when there is a large amount of potential energy stored in a device (torsion spring), I tend to wean away from the repair. I'll do every type of repair in a house expect gas piping. haha. Thanks again!!!

Thank you for the very clear and detailed video! Our garage door has one side’s cable fell off track. The cable end fell out of the notch and the whole cable unwrapped from the track. We were able to take it off and re-wire after watching your video. Now the garage door is working again! XD thank you!!
You're welcome!
Thanks! Somehow the loop on one of my cables had gotten frayed and was hanging by one strand. Only found it by accident while lubing the door for noise. Interestingly, when the replacements arrived and I got the damaged one off, it was 4 inches shorter than the new one. My guess was that since it was on a spring, it would've taken up the slack. I was wrong. The effect was that the opposite side of the door didn't close by about 4 inches. Since there was nothing wrong with the other cable, I wasn't going to replace it. But then I had to. And that turned out to be a good thing as it was frayed for an unknown reason much higher up.
Didn’t know you could do this without loosening the spring tension
Hi Garage Door Genius, thanks for this video .Quick question, there is a part that goes over the pin that the cable is on, on the side bottom of my door, which then seems to run under the black bumper thing that runs all the way across the bottom of the door -- so I wouldn't be able to just pull the cable off the pin. Ever seen that? Any suggestions? (I was going to try to post a photo but I see I can't do that on here.) Thanks!!!
Thanks for this video! I manged the door at work trying to leave for the day, got in a panic because I couldn't close the door! I used forklift to slowly lower the door after removing both cables. I'll be watching this video again tomorrow when I replace the cables!🤦🏼♂️😁

Do you recommend wd-40 around that area after you are done? I fix mine but then get un-sprung again. But after wd-40 it’s holding ok
So I have to replace my two bottom panels and just wanted to know if I bring the garage door up like how you have it and remove the wire as seen, will it chop my fingers, etc… off since the tension spring is still hot? Thanks.
