  • One of the most frequently asked questions I’m asked is: what watch should I buy for my first luxury timepiece under $5000? Over the years, my answer has always been consistent - either the Rolex Datejust or the Omega Seamaster. Although there is an endless array of brands and watches at this price point, today I share 7 reasons why the Rolex is still to this day your best choice, and how it crushes all competition.
Join me as I take a look at my favorite best-value sweet spot in the Datejust range, its amazing history, pop culture significance, technical evolution, and why it is a true luxury icon. If you’re looking for a safer investment compared to other options, have a look at why the Datejust will never let you down and why it could even be the only watch you’ll ever need!

TGV, great video. I purchased a vintage circa 1975 DJ last August. It's a beautiful time piece. Mine has the grey sigma dial, which has the white gold hands. The 1570 caliber is a great performer considering it's age. This video does well to reinforce my feelings about this style Rolex, especially because there is so much hype pushing the sport style watches (of which I have several). Thank you for such an informative special on an iconic watch. When I wear mine, I feel special and appreciative of the fact that I actually own one.

Great video. I bought a brand new Datejust in 1999. I had to sell it when the financial crash of 2008 happened. It wasn't a painstaking decision because, I wasn't really a watch guy. It wasn't until 2010 when I started to miss it. Badly. I'd saved enough for a vintage 1601 and bought it. I still have that watch and will never ever let it go. Such mesmerising timepiece, I’m 23 and just got my dream watch, the Rolex datejust 16233 (year 1991) sunburst blue dial on a two tone jubilee

I got my first luxury watch a few months ago (Tudor Black Bay 58), and I am looking for a 1988 version of a DJ (Blue or Linen dial are my favourite ones i have seen) - 1988 is my birth year :)

Love the classic gold & steel you have on, very classy with a DJ. Due to Covid 19 I’m rocking a SKX007 and PJ’s. great episode, stay safe everyone. 👍🏻

An absolute classic. I’ve had my stainless black dial with sticks on an oyster with fluted bezel for almost a year now 126334. Sporty. Dressy. As stated, it does it all !!! Excellent video.

Hey TGV, what is the reference number for the sky blue dial datejust on thumbnail picture of this video? It looks so gorgeous and I instantly fell in love with it.

I just got mine last weekend. 116334. Blue/sticks/fluted/jubilee, which is my ideal config. At my local AD too. I couldn't be happier with it.

Great video TGV! Why don't you do another livestream? I think the last one you did was over two years ago, and there can't possibly be a more oppurtune time than this.

My favorite Datejust would have to be 126303. With only one index on the dial and those "pseudo-funky" roman numerals, it always had a place in my heart. Not to mention the perfect two-tone blending.

Watching this wearing my DJ41 black dial.
Owned it for 3 years and still love it as much as when I first bought it. Looks good with a suit and with jeans and t-shirt.

Thanks TGV. I know I am going to be humming that all night!
Hope you are well. Always love the videos.
I love my 2019 36mm Datejust. It is a watch I come back to after not wearing it for a while and am so glad I own it. I am fortunate.
    Ok, be well.

      Thankfully, is music is eternal.
Enjoy your DJ my friend, thank you for the comment.

    Great, great stuff!
My favorite videos are your Date-Justs, Day-Dates, and Explorers.....I've watched all countless times.
QUESTION - You mentioned in, maybe a year-end reflective video, about Lost in Translation with Bill Murray.
I can't find it! Do you remember the exact video?
    Thanks!
PS: I've worn Rolex Steel Sports for 40+ years, and 2 years ago finally bought a Datejust-41.
I wear it 90% of the time and the Jubilee is my favorite bracelet.

Just a question for general Rolex owners and enthusiasts. Why is the Explorer 1 fetching a higher premium over a regular 39mm Oyster? Just a different dial and bracelet costs $2500 more?
