"A tech boss applauded one of his workers for selling the family dog so he could return to work in the company’s office.
During a virtual town hall with his employees, Clearlink CEO James Clarke talked about the sacrifices he was seeing from some of the workers who were shedding “blood, sweat, and tears” for the firm.
“I learned from one of our leaders that in the midst of hearing this message, went out and sold their family dog which breaks my heart,” Clarke said as he began to brag about some of his past achievements as the company’s “head of the humanization of pets movement.”*

I actually got fired from my position as GM for allowing my staff to occasionally bring their kids in when they didn’t have childcare. I worked at a recreational place that hosts kids bday parties, school field trips, families - very kid friendly. The head of HR made the comment “well they can’t work and parent at the same time”. I was there… it was NO problem. Not to mention that the staff , despite being incredibly and athletically talented, didn’t make enough money to afford childcare. It broke my heart.

I was working at a Bakery/deli department at a grocery store at the time years back.
1 of my coworkers had gotten permission from the department manager to bring her kid in to work.
She brought her kid. When then same department who gave her permission find out about it, yhr the department manager lost her mind and started yelling at her in front of everybody including her kid and the customers.
The manager still had a job afterwards.
      Family owned grocery store.
The family felt sorry for the department manager because her husband died years earlier.
Her husband was also the Department Manager for the same Bakery/Deli (2 separate departments with each of them a department manager. The 2 departments was shared the same area.).
1 of the worst managers I had ever worked with. Did a bad job running the departments.
The odd thing is, she sets her own schedule, she schedule herself to work 7 days per week every single week.
About a year or 2 after I quit, she had a heart attack. She ended up getting fired because she did a No-Call No-Show after her medical leave had ended.

So I actually worked for this Company for almost 9 years. I started as a lower level sales agent and at the time it was the fastest grow Marketing, and Sales Call center in the valley at the time. It was originally owned by a gentleman named Phil Hansen and I know for a fact he would be absolutely disgusted by this man. The company was built on a culture of Family first, and they 100% cared about every employee. This company was considered a top sales force that had #01 marketing positions for Verizon Fios service, Frontier Communications, Quest, Centurylink, Dish Network, Direct TV, and Vivint Alarms.
I watched this company go from owning 1 level of a large 3 story building, to eventually owning the all 3 levels, and the building next to it. They renovated both buildings and provided free drinks, and snacks for everyone, and tons of give always for top sales agents. Yearly Vegas Trips for hundreds of employee's who were considered the best of the best. They even built a slide that went form the 3 floor, to the first floor that many grown adults used, and loved. The main reason they built it was for employees kids. The sad part is when Phil finally decided to sell his share of the business guys like this took over and the company went down hill fast. They went from having 5K employees to now only have less than 750. They had multiple location in Utah, Arizona, and Oregon. Once Covid hit things got worse, and they continued to have layoffs but tried to continue to push for sales with their entire workforce having to work from home.
This man is nothing, and contributed none to what this company once was. If anything he is the primary reason so many like me quit, and will continue to quit. From having a culture of supporting the employees, to being the sworn enemy. He hasn't ever worked hard, and probably never will. He is your everyday average fucktard, that has everything handed to him on a silver plater. I still communicate with many of my friends who still work there and they all pretty much say the same thing that Ana and Cenk are saying. Its sad to see what used to be a great thing, and did a lot of good for people turn into a total shit bag

"Quiet quitting," has two different meanings. When you're an employer, what it means is that your employees are not putting more effort or enthusiasm into the performance of their duties than is absolutely required. As such, it is a misnomer, because the employee or employees in question haven't actually resigned their positions and are still taking a paycheck.
From an Employee's perspective, Quiet-Quitting means doing your job as it was written in your job description. No more, no less. If you want people to do more, then pay them more. You don't work for free, why should they?

I have a laptop given to me from my employer that has a VPN installed. However, if I'm not using the VPN, I do most of my work on my own personal computers that are far better than the cruddy work issued laptop. Alternatively, I can download everything I need in one session and then work off of 365. Unless I a need to access the company server directly, most of my work stuff is in the cloud or in email attachments and easily accessible without needing to log in to the VPN. I had this same discussion with my employer several years ago and by every metric, I was more productive teleworking. What's often the case is that employers don't understand how their employees work.

    Context:
This guy returned to a company he founded years ago. While he was gone, the executives that took over created an amazing, flexible culture. They were starting to transition to remote work before the pandemic hit.
Throughout the pandemic, they learned employees were working harder at home. They also realized folks were burning themselves out, so they instituted a half-day Friday policy to promote self-care.
When Clarke returned to the company, he swore up and down and all around that employees would be able to continue to work remote and keep the half-day Fridays. Then when employees were upset at this change, he became offended for ??? reasons.
As far as employee have been informed, the company is not losing money. It’s simply failing to meet growth goals Clarke and his new execs picked.
This is an awesome company that’s being ruined by out-of-touch leadership.
Source: I know multiple people who work there.

The US is the least family-friendly 'first world' country in the world. Working households are expected to have both parents spend their day at jobs so they can afford... daytime child care by strangers. Now republicans expect the child to work as well so that rich shareholders who don't add value to any products or sales but merely reap the value created by those workers can take luxury vacations on their luxury yachts and claim all of that as 'work expense' because they shoot off a few e-mails in the meantime.

Current Clearlink employee here, and I can tell you-for a fact-that the whole "30 remote employees didn't even open their laptops for a month" thing does NOT tell the full story.
In short, there were a number of tech employees who were having issues with their work laptops, and, rather than requesting new laptops (because those were having issues with certain internal systems, too) decided to work using their own personal computers at home, 'cause most of them had better equipment than what the company provided, anyway.
But those personal computers, of course, didn't have the company's tracking software installed on them, so you can probably see why that would raise a few questions.
Does this represent all 30 of said employees? I don’t know, but I know it represents at least some of them.
That having been said, the fact that Clearlink's CEO cited this little factoid as a justification for forcing a return to office-with only two weeks' notice-at BEST demonstrates he was ignorant of the full story, but at worst shows he was being disingenuous in the extreme.

From what I understand, “quiet quitting” is when you do the required work and effort mandated by your employer, but nothing more than that. Sooooo….if someone doesn’t stay late, attend non mandatory meetings, complete more work than the position they occupy is required to complete…that’s “quiet quitting?”
If you want your employees to stay longer and work harder then you should pay them better wages and give better benefits and/or bonuses. Give workers a reason to commit themselves more to their jobs.
But I thought full filling the job requirements was what you get paid to do. You don’t get paid to do beyond that.

Some folks not opening their laptops doesn't actually necessarily mean they weren't working. I've known folks who just used their personal PCs from home because the company issued laptops were dated and had poor performance or specs, and using the official laptop was a significant hinderance to their productivity. It might be workers slacking off, but it might be workers who don't want to have their productivity held back by the company's lack of investment in workers.

Good on you! and this happened in the health sector 🙄 Horrifying - and uncivilized
Like you'd go: Oh, never mind then. I just stay and outperform myself!
Not to rub it in, but the unions in Scandinavia fought a long battle to for the right to stay home on your child's 1st sick day. You are then ment to find alternative child care for any further days.
If you need to take your child to a health appointment you are ENTITLED to go with your child.
If you have a child suffering something cronic, that obviously is going to keep you from work more than "normal", arrangements will be made, so the company can be compensated. Mostly you simply work less ours, and you will be compensated for loss of income.
The philosophy is, if you can't care for your kid, we'll have to pay someone else to do it...... This is best, cheapest and easiest solution!
