- A compilation of discarded vocal tracks recorded by Brian Wilson for "Don't Talk" from the Pet Sounds sessions, possibly for an intro section that went unused.
/ brianwilsonlive
its obvious that he isn't even trying to sing perfectly in key or have good delivery here.. probably did every harmony in a single take.. what a genius..
Perfection isn’t reality which is why most “melodyne’d” pop music today will die. Reality is immortal. 🤘🏻
Geez, he could really get his voice low. We hear his beautiful high range so much, I forget how wide his full vocal range was
He. Made. This. As. A. Demonstration. Piece.
When it got to #4 I teared up
layers of heaven
Hey Leo! That’s cool that you like beach boys too!
Oh my goodness man, you’re even here too!
8 layers of vocals?!? MAN! Brian was wild!!
Pure genius!
it was actually just 4 harmonies double tracked
@@devhiinnanthakumar4637 Brian himself said it was 8. Go to his Insta and scroll to this post and read the comments that had his responses.
@@devhiinnanthakumar4637 yep I just commented that somewhere else gotta have an ear for that stuff
And then not even use them...
For informational purposes, this vocal tracks were used to give a sense to the musicians to feel the direction the song was going for. This vocal demo was intended to guide the musicians. The eight voices were done and produced by Brian Wilson alone!
I think I read where this was going to be backing vocals for "Don't Talk" and he decided not to use them..
This is amazing, like angels singing ❤
@@richardcerbini3257 He could have just made this the track! I love it.
@@richardcerbini3257 No.
@@runnersdialzero1244 no what?
Dear God, thank you for letting me be alive at the same time as this genius.
Saw him live a few years ago for the 50th anniversary of Pet Sounds, seeing him in the flesh a few meters away playing God Only knows was incredible
@@annierobbinswilkinson3051 this is a privilege
The amount of layering on this is actually insane. Seriously, try to pick apart by ear each and every single layer on the final (8) cut. Brian’s ear, melodic sense, compositional chops... it’s devastatingly simple in theory but highly complex and deeply creative in execution. I know it’s been said to death, but what a genius.
I can’t believe that Brian was doing all those harmonies by himself! Incredible! Plus, his voice is just absolutely GORGEOUS. I just don’t know why this wasn’t added in the final cut. It could’ve replaced the strings solo.
@@daniellavaladez7820 I think it would had made such a delicate, fragile song too big and explosive. Brian’s harmonizing is unreal and does sound gorgeous in all its gargantuan qualities, I’m with you! But “Don’t Talk” is such a small, beautiful song that strives in its vulnerability and subtlety, I think. :) What do you think?
@@rafaeltrindade7009 Nah, I think it should’ve been mixed into the final version. It would have made for a gorgeous outro, at least in my opinion. Brian was right when he said that he could’ve made Pet Sounds on his own, and this is definitive proof of that. Such a genius, he was light years ahead of his time it’s just astounding. And the fact that he’s nearly deaf in his right ear yet was somehow able to compose some of the most harmonically complex music of all time makes him all the more incredibly talented. Plus, he was handsome, too, I got a bit of a massive crush on him❤️
@@daniellavaladez7820 Understandable! One of the main qualities I appreciate about "Pet Sounds" is its restraint, especially on tracks like "Don't Talk", "I'm Waiting for the Day", "Let's Go Away for a While" and "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times", all just achingly subtle and gorgeously arranged songs. I do understand your point though! Beating a dead horse here but yes of course, Brian was/is almost too stellar and too talented for this world, it's ridiculous. Indeed a genius
@@rafaeltrindade7009 There are versions of Don't Talk posted on YT that mix this in as a backing vocal over the second verse. Fits pretty perfectly, but I don't know if it needs to be there. Still interesting...
He was right when he said he could’ve done pet sounds by himself. He covered mikes role better than mike could imagine.
Most professional musicians could pretty much cover Mike’s role.
@@scottlombardi4603 Most amateur musicians could pretty much cover Mike's role.
It always amazes me that there’s never a lack of Mike Love bashers. two people whose voices mesh together almost always sound better than someone getting double tracked. Brian Wilson could’ve sang almost all of the Beachboy parts -it would not have sounded better- that’s the reason he never did it
@@kitrichardson5573 Exactly this! There were 6 Beach Boys. Brian knew what he was doing when he used their voices.
@@kitrichardson5573 Yup Brian was smart enough to write the parts intentionally for the voices he knew would be singing them. Genius.
Brian Wilson is the Beethoven of the 60s.
Sheer genius. 🎼🖤
Of the 20th century, even!
This is unreal stuff... Absolutely haunting yet beautiful
Haunting? I guess you’re right, but I find the beauty in it WAY more powerful than the hauntingness
Brian a music genius
Thats why he is so weird
The smarter the person
The stranger they are
I keep contributing to the views of this video because I just cannot get over how all these harmonies come together. Brian Wilson is something else. His talent haunts me.
there's an outtake for the song "water" from Smile and Brian does a similar multiple vocal overdub. how he heard all these parts is astounding. this is 4 part harmony, double tracked for thickness. sometimes The Beach Boys would sing the complete harmony together , then overdub it two more times for a total of 12 voices in a 4 part harmony
“I can hear so much in your sighs
I can see so much in your eyes
there are words we both could say”
Tracks 1-2 😏
Tracks 3-4 ☺️
Tracks 5-6 🥹
Tracks 7-8 😭😭😭😭😭😭
When I heard this for the first time, I swear it unlocked a part of my soul.
I've listened to this more times than I can count and have only just noticed that you can hear his bass vocal very faintly in the background of the first layer.
As someone who records music as a hobby I wonder what order he recorded each part in and in how many takes? Did he even use a piano or metronome to guide his vocals to stay in tune and in time??? This man's a genius
It’s the second layer, first layer is a high falsetto my friend. And I’m sure he used a piano as a reference, he’s a human like the rest of us.
Yes I always wonder where you find this stuff 😳I’ve been listening to The Beach Boys since 1963 and couldn’t believe how much extra sounds they’ve had until I had you tube😳WOW what a treat!!!
Just mind blowing! And further proof that Brian is a genius!

2024 now, and these harmonies still hit harder than ever. Brian Wilson is one of the greatest American songwriter/composer/arranger/singers ever! So cool hearing this again after a long Beach Boys hiatus for me haha
Haunting…yet one of the most beautiful pieces of audio music I’ve ever heard that captured a certain feeling vocally.
2:19: the sound of Heaven's gates opening up
truly
This is incredible! I’ve never heard the harmonies separated like this before. How??
New Wave Films I think Brian recorded them one at a time and stacked
Usually they do it to give the illusion of more people on a track than one. I mean look what queen did for bohemian rhapsody. In the beginning Freddy used this trick to make it sound like his band members were singing then at the end he added his members to the chorus to see how they sound with him.
He was in touch with the perpetual force that keeps the universe and consciousness in motion
I think that perhaps New Wave Films "How??" is asking how did forjustsomemusicstuff get access to the different layers/tracks, as opposed to how Brian actually recorded the harmonies (which is, in itself, very straightforward - He overdubbed)
@@NOWtheband But, as far as I can tell, these tracks aren’t actually on the final song.
Brain Wilson's eternal awesomeness sent me here
And his musical genius!
oh HELL yeah, Brian himself popping into my youtube comments. you are famous for using computers and being very hip to email, glad you could stop by! and for anyone foolishly doubting this is actually him, uhhh he included his birth year in the email address! how else would he know that??
@@forjustsomemusicstuff7040 Don’t worry, I reported the comment as spam. I’ve been seeing the same fake Brian Wilson commenting on other BB videos I’ve watched. It’s annoying and tedious, but someone’s gotta do it.
thanks for looking out for the channel. no telling what that freak would do with people’s emails if they actually wrote to him, and i’m sure there’s some older folks who would do that. i wanna keep my comment sections civil and free of spam
Don't ever forget what Brian has given to us! A world without Brian Wilson and his music would have been a lesser world.
Brings me to tears what a talent and genius
My parents were this generation, and they were among those that disliked and didn't understand Pet Sounds. You get why that was, if all you ever wanted to hear was songs about beaches and girls and driving a Woody. But damn, is this record deep, incredible, and worth a thousand listens before you truly get it.
big thanks to robin pecknold for discovering this gem for me
This could be the instrumental stuff before the last chorus. He prefered the strings of course :)
This sounds a lot like Our Prayer.

Apparently Brian recorded this voice-track in order to show the studio musicians how they should sound. In fact, in the song, you can hear the backgroud play precisely this.
Good lord this man had such a powerful voice.
7s got the magic
It always lit when john lennon agrees with me
The magic of bass
It’s interesting to me that he started with the falsetto first rather than the lower parts
it is interesting to note! but I similarly find it tends to be easier to harmonize with a higher part first because the lower frequencies are 'felt' a bit more and cut through a mix when listening back.
Stunning!
Remember they were literally recording on ANALOGUE!! WHAT?!!
Still are bro it's just more difficult people dont do it much

I can’t tell if there are four harmonies here and he’s just double tracking each one of them (making for eight tracks). Can anyone with good ears tell?
8. He posted this on his instagram

8 different tracks, all sung by Brian in this demo
You’re right, it’s four separate harmony parts sung twice each, making a total of eight tracks!

Does he make the melody/harmony first, or write the lyrics? Does anybody know? Thank you
The melody would naturally come first then he splits it into 4 parts twice.
@@famousashtray incredible
Really appreciate your response, thanks
Brian has said in interviews that he makes the music first and adds the lyrics last. Usually writing lyrics with a collaborator. On this song and most of this album, the lyrics were written with Tony Asher.
Very four freshman!
I mean who is the 1 dislike? for real?
Looks like there are 2 dislikes now @Islandia Music.Go figure. As a musician this is a mesmerising glimpse into how to build harmonies by an absolute master of vocals.
There are now 5, and I, for one, believe they are all accounts made by Mike Love
Where was the actual song though?
Can someone recreate this ???

oh cool. did he post it somewhere?
Guess I'm dumb, but how many of the eight layers are different lines of music, and how many are an overdub of what we've already heard? Four lines, then overdub each line? I'm not even remotely a trained musician here...
From what I can tell, it's a four part harmony - four distinct parts. Each of the four parts are double tracked (sung on top of one another), making eight total tracks
@@edpoe1108 That's what I thought. Thanks...
Is this all Brian?
Yes
shit yea
Autotune was invented in 1998
People before 1998:
do you honestly believe no one on this planet can sing anymore because of a type of vocal distortion used in hiphop?
get out of here with that middle school ass comment
and for reference, the same guy who sang this used a shit ton of autotune in his last couple of albums. now go back to finding a Led Zeppelin video to comment “everyone at my school loves Justin Bieber, but this is REAL music!” on
